Nobody here mentioned the true meaning of socailism. Basically, it is an economic system where the means of production are publically owned, and the economy is formed from cooperation, not competition. This is clearly a seperate economic system, outside of capitalism. What these fellows are talking about is social democracy- the idea that the people can collectively collect the fruits of capitalism, and distribute them for the public good. Until economy changed, we are not a socialist country.
When was America ever a Shining Beacon? I imagine it had to be sometime after the Civil Rights movement. The 1970s maybe, under Carter? Because we've been going nowhere but down since then.
