釣魚台島的最早文獻出自明朝永樂元年（1403年）的《順風相送­¬》，

稱該島為釣魚嶼，稱赤尾嶼為 「赤坎嶼」

清乾隆三十二年（1767年）乾隆皇帝欽命繪製之《坤輿全圖》

（《坤輿全圖》使用閩南語發音，稱為「好魚須」［Hao-yu-­¬su］，

即「釣魚嶼」）。台灣沿用「釣魚台」名稱至今。
