If I say this really slowly maybe you'll grasp it. In principle, fighting against aggressors in the military isn't altruistic, you're engaging in mutual cooperation with others toward a common goal - defense of your freedom. This is of course assuming one's nation values personal liberty. Not all do.

Whether a particular military action is in fact valid is another question and the topic of another debate. There's little doubt America needed to be engaged in WWII, as it was they waited too long.
