  • Natalie Merchant sings this song....

Patti Smith is Living it ...

There can t be a comparison

  • Patti s emotion usurps all others

  • hrm i will help you to feel like you are in heaven

  • so Share ur dreams and thoughts with me

  • This is for me one of the greatest rock anthems ever written. There is such power in Patti's performance and Bruce's lyrics are so timeless. I know others have done covers of this song but no one has the pathos and depth of Patti's perfomance of this song. She owns it.

  • Her voice has lost none of it's power. magnificent.

  • Is it just me, or is Sarah hotter with the short hair like that? Yes. She is. Don't even answer.

  • hihi Lets rock baby

  • Wow. What an amazing performance. Her voice is perfect and strong 30 years after her original recording. You can still see and hear the passion in her voice and gestures. One of my all-time fav songs. Thumbs up if you love the "BUT!" @2:02 transitioning into the next melody and chorus.

  • F... beber

  • The Beauty is on Duty

  • What is the name of the actor (the narrator in the beginning of the video)? Thanks

  • @zozonce Jeff Bridges

  • 10,000 Maniacs verson is the one I prefer. Sorry, Patrick

  • @amishmike1 You are certainly in the minority there.

One of my former band's producers co-owned a recording studio at which Natalie Merchant (The Maniacs vocalist) did a recording sesion. On one occasion, Merchant announced, to those deemed fortunate enough to be in her "sphere of divinity" that day, "We will be drinking herbal tea today, and no smoking allowed," indicative of a very non-rock & roll attitude, trying to control others in her presence, as if she owned the studio anyway.

  • @amishmike1 Merchant's voice is bland, boring, and devoid of soul.

Smith's voice runs the gamut, from raunchy and raucous to hauntingly melodic. Listen to Smith's voice on the beautiful "Elegie," from her debut LP, "Horses." It's here on You Tube, the first citation from the video search list.

    .

Then listen to Smith on her "Babelogue"/"Rock N Roll Nigger." (the complete version, with a 30-second pause, and a great slide show, is here on You Tube, third citation on the search list..

  • Seriously, play the 10,000 Maniacs version of "Because The Night" back-to-back with The Patti Smith Group's version, and then tell me if you still, honestly, think that Merchant's vocals and the so-called "Maniacs'" (if ever there was a misnamed band, relative to their sterile style and the politically-correct attitude of their lead singer) musicianship is superior to Smith and her band's original version of the song.

  • @gymnastix I have done this and Patti does a good job on the song but she simply can't match Natalie Vocally and I love the nuances that Natalie and the Maniacs put into the song. Patti Smith version is good. 10,000 Maniacs version is transcendant.

  • @amishmike1 Furthermore, read Smith's own lyrics, poetry, and other writings (including rock music criticism), compare and contrast her talents versus Merchant's. I'd be very much surprised if you didn't discover a vast difference between a mere average pop singer and a true artist, on multiple levels.

  • @amishmike1 Of course you're entitled,as is everyone, to your own opinion. I just hope you have the chance to explore the whole of Patti Smih's works.

  • @amishmike1 She may be annoying, sometimes pretentious as hell (do a Tube search for comic actress Gilda Radner's "Candy Slice Group," for another view of Smith). But she puts herself "out there," is never boring, and undeniably an artist of breadth and depth, one who has evolved into someone richer than in her earlier career, which was pretty damn thrilling as it was.

  • dude looks like a lady

  • @VikingWarCry Or "Lady looks like a dude," a female Keith Richards, to be more precise.

  • I LOVE PATTI!! SHE`S MY HEROINE!!

  • I love it

  • I really loved Natalies version more.

  • dziękuje..

  • Powerful performance.

  • dude its the tron guy

  • thumbs up

  • This woman is a pioneer of folk, punk, rock and modern music. Her career has spanned decades and her songs and poetry can never be duplicated but she is often copied and covered by muscians who understand her love for artistry.

  • Actually Bruce wrote all of it. Patti Smith made it a hit. Real teamwork. A grateful Bruce Springsteen agreed to share writing credit with Patti.

  • that is patty smith, show some respect young people!! that is true artist!!!!

  • Patti Blows Bruce S Away

  • how come so much talk about looks? i thought music was about sound??Yea, it is great when an old time rocker like Debby Harry or Chrissie amphlett or Wendy James or even Exene at one time can wear a lot of make up look good and still be a great rocker. But Patti and some girls like Johnette of Concrete blonde didnt want to make up . They were still all great. She was balling the kid with lng hair here, actually he ws 30 years younger(ex of tatum oneal).

  • Alice Cooper looks better with his make up on !!

  • why she wrote that song!? is she lesbian!? sorry for being such as ignorant, but i really want to know about it

  • @pauli1891 The original lyrics were written by Bruce Springsteen - see his 1978 renditions on utube. In his documentary "The Promise", Bruce explained that at the time in 1978, he didn't feel like he could write a romantic song. Jimmy Iovine, Bruce's record engineer, was also producing for Patti Smith, and Bruce agreed to hand what he had written to Patti. She wrote some of the lyrics, as you hear them on this video, from a woman's perspective - the "lover" in the song is her husband.

  • @nkkcboss thanks! :D

  • A real artist who has never compromised, an amazing woman. Love her.

  • @tweety660 cascada doesn't have a version, nor does she actually sing, when you think you're hearing cascada (which I doubt is anything like her real name) you're actually listening to the work of a dozen nerds on a computer. Pop 'singers' like 'cascada' are completely fake. Patti is a real person, a real singer who makes real music. I uhh don't believe that physical beauty is among her gifts but that really doesn't matter, she has a beautiful voice and this is a beautiful song.

  • If you think BRUCE could have done better I BEG TO DIFFER...NO DISRESPECT ;WE DO LOVE THE GUY... PRESENTATION IS 99% of the law.......

  • @HuxleyBarada Please have a look at Bruce's own renditions from 1978. I think you'll be impressed by them. He sings with raw passion, and evokes the kind of emotion rarely seen by "artists" of today

  • Patti, rapiscimi.

  • I'm a Patti and Bruce fan. Patti wrote nothing. Springsteen was recording this in the studio almost word for word for the Darkness set. He discarded it. jimi iovine who was producing both asked Bruce if he could take the demo to Patti. She recorded it word for word. Bruce gave her a credit because thats how he is and she changed 2 ..2 words. On the new Darkness box. You can see him record it.. WORD FOR WORD> Patti really didn't write anything but they did form a 30 something friendship.

  • @jeffbebe6 Wow, you must be in really tight with Bruce if he told you this. If Patti did not write any part of Because the Night, the record company would not approve giving her a Credit, and or a Royalty.

  • I heard an duett between bruce and patti on the rock´n roll hall of fame concert last year....was just the best thing I´ve ever heard....the best musicians in the world...together with one of the best songs in the world......

  • my mother mothered like Patti Smith sings

  • I love the fact that after all these years she still sings it with the same power. By the way, when was this? Because,..damn! I'd still bang Sarah Mckahl......Mack....Machal.....whatever her name is!!

  • her voice is even more beautiful to me here than in 1978

  • muito bom mesmo

  • the description is wrong...the boss wrote the music and lyrics for the darkness on the edge of town album...he decided it didnt fit the album and gave the song to patti...she tweaked a few words here and there but she didnt write the lyrics

  • @jhein1992 From Wikipedia: 'Until the release of Springsteen's The Promise box set in November 2010, the only commercially-released recording of a Springsteen version of the song was included on Live/1975–85 on which Smith was listed as co-writer.'

  • @andyingreece yes co-writer...the description says bruce wrote music while patti wrote lyrics...in actuality bruce wrote the music and bruce and patti wrote the lyrics

  • Comment removed

  • Jesus, she looks like Anthony Kiedis and Iggy Pop had a kid.

  • Looks like one of the Ramones.

  • Genial! Patti , Great!!

  • Two awesome women and the Dude introducing them.. how does this video have 32 dislikes?

  • Good song but Natalie Merchant does it the best!!!!

  • @dellinspiron94

REALLY? Natalie had absolutely no passion in her vocal, which to me is necessary for the song......

I don't see the need to cover PS songs anyway, but that one was just bland, imho.....

  • Patti sounds AMAZING, as always. But can we talk about Sarah's boy haircut? I'm OBSESSED. It looks awesome. Also awesome is the fact that she's playing with PATTI freakin' SMITH.

  • Well I love Patti but I think Keel's version is by far the best I've heard... extremely intense.

  • Patti Smith is a real woman, not this Twilight-based-needy-coquette-crap that's being pushed today.

  • @algiene1 hence the crap music we are forced to listen to today... Stand up ladies. I can hear your voice!

  • This is direct proof that style, grace, and presence does not come in a bottle of makeup. Patti Smith is a living legend.

  • I like the cover sung by Natalie Merchant best.. and the Paris 85 version with Springsteen and Nils Lofgren's incredible guitar solo/duo far better..

  • great song , great voice....wow.

    gb

  • She is so adorable, i love her :)

  • anyyways

does anyone know who the rhythm guitarist is here? The one all in white on the far left (shot of him at 2.45)--he really seems like the guy who plays guitar now for Big Brother and the Holding Company .... same guy?

  • Oh Lord, her pasion is so hot!

  • She was (and still is) HOT 1978 album shows it. Bette Davis Eyes!

  • Wow

  • awesome but undeniably ugly.. deal with it haha

  • Can people stop commenting on her looks? We KNOW she's absolutely beautiful. Now stop and enjoy a great performance of a great song.

  • little make up won't hurt i think, it's not for looking good it's respect for audince

  • @sonofazazel Crass view.

  • @sonofazazel Heopfully audience isn't so shallow as to need that kind of "respect".

  • @sonofazazel how about not buying into the need for makeup shows respect to young girls everywhere, teaching them and the world that beauty comes from expressing your self rather than selling out and being a lemming.

  • @tphenley

Haha, at least I am not the only one that sees the dude whenever I see him!

  • awesome, simply awesome

  • Is she related to Kieth Richards?

  • @PaintedDemon yeah from the Legend Clan

  • This was when skill, artistic ability and talent meant more than "looks".

  • @sandman4321 The two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. One may be beautiful in appearance, as well artistic, hard-working, in possession of talent(s).

  • Voll Hammerrrrrr geil..

  • She is so powerful. Wow.

  • SIMPLY AWESOME !

  • Is that Grohl on guitar ?

  • @chrismndc Im prettry sure that its Lenny Kaye, her original guitarist

  • @chrismndc It's Lenny Kaye standing to her left.

  • What was the show she was performing on? Was it an award?

  • Patti sings with great passion and emotion. Even if she looks like a man this is a brilliant piece.

  • not so tough now with all that hair eh obadiah stane? lol

  • Awesome performance! Patti rocks!

  • She´s DA best!!!! And Sarah too!

  • I think that her voice has gotten better. When I first heard this song (and even now), the hair stands up on my arms, especially during the piano solo.

  • not bad could be a vampire's romantic theme, but I find the natalie merchant's version sexier

  • Powerful!!!!!!

  • The most amazing woman born on planet Earth.

  • impresionante patti, magnifico video !!!

    gracias pattirocks !

  • Beautiful, powerful, incredible Patti

  • Does anyone have more info on this performance? Not being a TV watcher I can only guess it's an award show? Who are the guitarists?

    thnx

  • kuzynka...Patti has more beauty in her little finger than you can EVER wish to have.

  • @theguitargrl lol ...i love it! awesome words... u write?

  • @theguitargrl Id like to see lady gaga or britney spears in a talent contest with Patti. Who would win? HAHAHA!!

  • Different strokes, I guess, but ......

  • @kuzynkaKrystiana Wow. Your comment is ugly.

  • @tarantulady

    Sorrryyyy ;-)

  • @kuzynkaKrystiana Shutt up Bitch!!

  • Not the best tecnical performance but, to be brutally honest, I don't care.

Passion is the key to this song and this performance is worth 5 stars for me.

  • This is Patti's song, and Sarah's voice would not be complementary to Patti's in this piece

  • A true classic, but is it just me, or is it weird to have Sarah - one of the greatest voices on the planet - simply playing piano? I'm sure she was thrilled to do so, but it's almost like, I don't know, suiting up Lebron James, and telling him not to shoot.

  • well, it's like having James in the game dishing to MJ. not the wisest choice, but understandable

  • Would someone please upload the song One Voice from Patti's Gung Ho album? Thanky kindly. ~w~

  • Is that Dave Grohl on guitar?

  • Nope

  • Is this Glen presenting?

Not to detract, but there is a true legend!

  • Actor Jeff Bridges

  • Joe Ramone

  • y Sarah McLachlan?

  • Because they're friends, they're both artists as well as singers/musicians, and Sarah plays piano really well :)

  • Brings me to tears...

  • bop til you drop babe,,we will always love you....from the u.k.....with love....xxx

  • This is fabulous-thanks for posting!! Can you please tell me what show this was from? Thanks.

  • she looks like a guy though

  • that's part of her charm,

  • leighboom, she looks like Patti Smith. And more to the point, she still sounds great.

  • I agree with you joe. what a wonderful song by patti smith and bruce springsteen.

  • AWESOME! it is the best

  • I like it more with her singing!

  • Not bad, Patti Smith may have put this song out there, but Natalie Merchant immortalized it.

  • Oh for Pete's sake. Bruce Springsteen wrote it in 1977. Patti, also recording at the Record Plant, in NY City, heard him recording it for his album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (1978). She complemented him on the song and when he didn't use it on the album, he allowed her to record it. She asked to change two lines and Springsteen not only agreed, he gave her co-authorship. If you want to see it immortalized, find Springsteen performing it in 1978 - the one that's about 7:38.

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA I don't need a history lesson, I am fully aware of the history of the song. And I have heard the Springsteen version you are referring to, it to is also good but IMO Merchant does the best performance of it. But as they say, opinions are like assholes; everyone has one.

  • @joe549549 OK, you like Merchant's cover. Fine. "Immortalized" means "make last forever."

How well do you think Ms. Merchant/10,000 Maniacs would have done making it last forever if Springsteen hadn't written it?

Your last sentence is a gratuitous insult and unbecoming, of anyone, but especialy someone with the taste to recognize a truly great rock song that will probably be covered in 100 years, if the planet still can find the energy to generate electricity.

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA I thank God (or pick your own diety) that I has the chance to live in the era of BOTH Patty and Natalie I refuse to compare them simply because they are so far above the latest group of wannbes that nobody can touch them ... Listen to Gaga and then listen to either Natalie or Patty ... the truth is out there.

  • @CPSJSMSUUMUGA who actually sings it first? is it patti or natalie?

  • @one3havoc patti

  • Fantastic!!!!!!

  • Wow never realized Sarh Mc Lachlan played w P.S.

  • That song is timeless and fabulous. She is quite a piece of work herself! Glad to know she's still around - doing well.

  • Patti Smith is the only god I need. <3

  • Comment removed

  • you know, i always thought she was a brilliant musician and kinda ugly lunatic.... i still do, but after this clip, i also think that she also is a Beautiful woman.

  • The greatest song ever.. of course with patti smith

  • I think Patti Smith and Natalie Merchant should get together and both sing this song.

  • The bass player looks like Chris Novoselic from Nirvana.

  • legend

  • What a great song, incredible how this woman can sing!

  • Awesome! Such a powerful performance! I love it!

  • This song makes me hate lead guitarists...

  • god damn i love this!

  • AWESOME..

  • ".. wife of Aerosmith" BAH AHA HA HA HA. I'll pay that :) How she transformed into a man is a mystery.

She is, however, an absolute friggin legend and a creative genius.

    Look up 'Summer Cannibals' lyrics.

  • She is awesome!

  • she looks like she could be the wife of Aerosmith

  • That's so dumb but so funny... she does resemble Steven Tyler a bit.. xD

  • to jest zajebisteeee....

  • it's so perfect this versionn, patti as amazing as always

  • This performance is truly amazing, but I prefer acoustic version :)

  • one of the best live-performers I´ve ever seen. Saw her a few years ago in Hamburg, Germany. Was just awesome.....never saw anything like that....

  • go, patti

  • I saw her live a little while back in Gateshead (UK) and she was stupendous; I've been watching bands for nearly 40 years and I've been enthralled, excited and moved before- but I have never experienced the emotional charge she elicits from an audience. She's special.

  • Vintage Patti! That amazing combination of 'tough as nails' and vulnerability -

Check out the bassist at 2:53 - telling Sarah that the solo's over

great vid, thanks for putting it up

  • Mesmerizing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rock n' Roll goddess!!!!

  • she's awesome. i saw her recently at trencin and it was unbelievable.

  • awesome, she rocks!
