I used to work at a high end pool facility in Dallas and we used CO2 to regulate the Ph. It's not un-common, just expensive. Its a lot safer than using Hydrochloric Acid.

@Pain 6745 apparently you've never set off a dry ice bomb. There is a tremendous amount of energy released when the vessel ruptures. Just watch "dry ice bombs" on YouTube. If you watch the video again, watch the drain cover on the bottom of the pool.
