What the man says is true. It wasnt price that kept people from buying GM. Or american cars at all. Infact.. they hadnt sold in Europe for decades so it was less of a shock here when they died. In USA american cars sold on patriotism alone. There was nothing desirable about them in terms of quality, performance, mpg or styling. Squeeky plastic all the way. When patriotism on its own was no longer enough to sell cars, they had no more legs to stand on and promptly collapsed one after the other.
commenting on what "Neville6000" said... actually Isuzu after forcing their company shares handed to the monopolize GM. Japanese Isuzu secretly started to get back their company piece by piece by selling well outside the US. They began to make money and started to buy back their company from GM. Isuzu's number 1 world's best selling struck in the year 2000's was the D'Max struck. Which is the rebranded Chevy Silverado struck.
Isuzu has managed to buy back completely their stock shares and ownership from GM from making so much money. They said they will never sell or makes cars for or in the US again! Their commercial vehicles are still the best in the world! They still have a website and going strong! Isuzu is very smart indeed...

Sometimes americans behave in the 2000s as if this is 1949 and the end of WW2, and theres nothing else in this world. Today everything is replaceable.
My only concern is for the companies that Ford, GM, & Chrysler were permitted to buy out-Volvo (owned by Ford), Mazda (Ford) Izusu (GM), SAAB (GM). All of these companies made better cars than the parent companies that own them now, and they're in the same boat because of the bullshit of the parent companies. Why should they suffer? They all should be let loose from them, and be able to stand on their own as they did before. Too bad Volvo, Mazda, Isuzu, & SABB can't buy the Big Three out.
Built in obsolescence is the way business stays in business.
If cars were built to last fewer cars would be sold. A product today is not supposed to be a good product, only a profitable product. A quick small profit trumps a large well thought out long lasting profit.
We live in a society that seeks instant gratification. Our economy reflects this attitude.
the technology cannot support their needs at the moment. as well, new technologies that are invented have their patents bought out by oil corps and are never seen again. i.e. the japanese liquid power car
Why don't GM (& the rest of America GO GREEN!)? GM could build all electric cars! If there were new laws about CO2 emissions of all 'new' cars.. then electric would be the answer!
If Tesla can do it.. then so can GM!
Sell cars with a solar (or any suitable Renewable energy) package for your home!
If you don't spend $100 a week on GAS
& you don't spend $100 a week on electricity for your home... then that's $200 a week in YOUR pocket & NOT some oil sheik or some greedy bankster's pocket!
I believe that the next stage of our economic development is the stage of a mixed economy of competing economic forces of private and public enterprises. This economic stage will eventually change to a pure socialist stage as capitalism will finally hit the dust and become history.
This will happen globally as we move into a world wide planned economy with political power coming from the bottom up.
Capitalism is dying! The crying of the auto industry is the death rattle of a economic system that let easy credit slit it's throat and bury it in a pile of worthless debt. The unregulated captains of industry feeding off of unproductive wars and pure greed and exploitation are guilty of murderous, bloodletting and torture all over the world. Capitalism is dead! Good riddance!
Your previous post you wrote that the government can keep the "profit". Must not the riddance of capitalism include relinquishing profit from the system? And the mind?
When the government takes over a private enterprise they will own and operate that private enterprise as a public enterprise.
If they take over the auto enterprise they can build cars that are friendly to the environment and sell those cars to the public. The government can operate the auto industry with the intention of making a profit just like a private enterprise. The profit instead of going to capitalists can go to the people in the form of a mass transit system, social programs, etc.
The private sector is begging the hated public sector to bail them out so they can continue to fail in doing what they have been doing in the past in the same old non profitable way.
I say ..."Don't rationalize! Nationalize!
Let the government take over the Auto Industry and manage it so that the government can make a profit and with that profit the government can rebuild it's crumbling infrastructure and help those that can no longer help themselves in this tanking economy.
Let those loser ass automotive companies go bankrupt. They've been producing absolute s*** for cars for the past 20 years, no freaking wonder they are not selling any cars.. the japanese cars here have been doing just fine (like Honda). These losers resisted producing fuel efficient cars all this time while they had the technology because they were in bed with the oil industry, now let them die or borrow from big oil
Obama will definitely try and save the automakers if for no other reason then to secure votes. There's also a potential loss of some 3 million jobs if the automakers go under that he just cant afford in the beginning of his presidency. If they do go under japan and Germany will be the big winners having eliminated their competition forever. Either way i don't see the republicans helping Obama with this mess after getting burned on the 700 billion dollar bailout.
If GM can't sell cars right now, wouldn't a bailout be used to pay employees to not make cars? Wouldn't they need another bailout in a few months or are we supposed to believe that the economy will suddenly rebound and GM will start selling cars again?
LOL they are cheaper, not better. They are selling due to cost. I'ld rather spend more than spend more time in the shop. But as I said the American cars are selling letft and right. Just they (US auto makers) figure they can get their hands on all that redistubtion of wealth. The numbers they claim to be a loss is from months back when the big SUV sells dropped.
But this is the deal. If you don't have a car,and need a car. And don't have one before the wekend is up. You didn't want a car.
The fact of the matter is, people have been buying too many new cars for too long. When you buy a new car you should keep it for about eight years, at least, or you threw your money away. In terms of what a car really is, transportation, that's what is rational. Now very few people can still afford to go car shopping out of boredom, so we've finally got a rational market correction.
Hyundai or Honda are cheap. But you know you get what you pay for. They have to be cheap, the turn wrench costs alot. Why buy something that spends more time in the shop than on the open road?
We know why the markets have failed. It is because they were not free to work the way any economist worth his salt knows that they should have been.
In this country we have a central bank, which we call the FED, who for the last 100 years has constantly manipulated our currencies and thus our markets.
There has not been a free market since 1913. Even Greenspan openly admits this.
People also need to keep in mind that liberty is of far more value then security.
here is an idea....what "if" every citizen stood up for themselves and say, hey we did not create this debt, you should get yourself out of it, it is not the citizen's responsibility to bailout a bunch of irresponsible "teenagers" who's been given the responsibility of doing the right thing, but instead they abuse it. So, I think it's fair to say, you got yourself in this mess, get yourself out of it." A person hard earned dollar should be just that-our hard earned dollar, not bailout money
Gov shouldn't be bailing anyone out. The sky is falling, the shy is falling . . . ! I tired of this crap. The auto franchise has been monopolized by GM, Ford, and Chrysler in the US and has created a climate where competition within was bought out. The only real competition came from overseas. Now they all cry foul. Let them eat cake. No bail outs!
No, my friend! GM ALREADY received $25 Billion dollar earlier this year from congress to build fuel efficient car. AND now they are "begging" for another $25 billion. I'll see if I can locate the article and I will fwd to you.
This whole crisis is fabricated by the rich and Bush Co. to get as much money from us as they can before the turn over of power to Obama. I just got approved for a 22K car with no problem even after a divorce that weaken my credit. This is a hand out for the rich from all of us that work and pay taxes.
Use the oil, auto assets to retool and rebuild the lost electric trains in our cities, which connected our neighborhoods, before these industries colluded to purchase and dismantle them.
Since the 1930's they destroyed streetcar and rail systems from California to New York City. Let us rebuild these using new technology.
Now this is getting a bit funny. Last week the older son need a car. We tooe him to a Ford dealership. Where every 15 minutes a Ah-ooo-gah went off. My wife asked what's the old horn. Sellsman says it goes off every time a sell is made. Every 15 minutes!
Just sounds like the auto makers want to stick their fingers in the pie, like the bankers.
The thing that pisses me off is the fact that these companies are saying that they are just realizing that they are F'd just four months in advance! Jesus Christ on a cracker. Can we publicly execute the men in charge already, or do we have to wait until a few million people die of starvation?
why dont they go bankrupt and start over...they cant afford the retirees, the health care, dude america is in big trouble, big fukin trouble....its going to get a lot worse before it gets better...the media will tell you otherwise, but think about it when is the last time the media has told the truth about a major news event...no panic is what they want, keep spending, keep using credit cards, joke
Yes, the depression is expected during this winter, but I wouldn't be surprised if they make it crash just before Christmas since they worship Satan. Right now, make sure you bulk up on 3 things: food, energy and guns. It's going to get real bad!
Yes, it seems fabricated. What do you think about the American Free Press? Real or fake? It's based out of DC, but the gov have tried to shut it down when it was known as "the Spotlight". Who can we trust? In live in LA, and when our previous mayoe Riordan sought out a more conservative paper, he was suddenly silenced. Real News almost seems as bad as CNN...vague and dodging the facts.
U.S. Car companies need to Sell CARS. not get bailed out. If they would finally sell us what we want there would be No problem. Let's see what happens when they fail. A bailout is a BandAid at best.
bobors7715: please define 'things' in your statement that "if you let it die now things are going to get a lot worse fast." How long will they be bad for? Forever? Big3 want to keep things just the way they are. the only ones who should be fearful is them and their Oil soaked cronies.
People should be worrying about what they will have to eat, not loosing their house and getting a new job. Being able to get a brand new SUV should be the last thing on peoples mind now.
I think the bailout money should be given to the Japanese and German manufacturers to takeover and restucture the existing plants. Most will keep their jobs and customers get cars that are good.
If you have an ounce of pity for the big 3, watch "who killed the electric car" -great documentary
The CEOs of Chrysler Group, Ford and GM earned a combined total of $24.5 million in salaries, bonuses and other compensation in 2006.
What kind of asshole thinks they make $250k after they show up to Congress in private jets? Moron.
In 2006 a typical UAW-represented assembler at GM earned $27.81 per hour of straight-time labor. A typical UAW-represented skilled-trades worker at GM earned $32.32 per hour of straight-time labor.
She should have thanked her guests before closing that segment. That's bad news etiquette. She must be new, because was moving her head a lot, and sounded nervous.
promoting and nurturing more like keeping the same corrupt people at the top. The USA protects industries like anyone else.
These companies might learn a thing or two if they had to stand on their own two feet. Although the economy is screwed either way, waaay too much debt by individuals and the government.
Give them all the money you wont it will not stop what is going on.If they wear not making money last year them they are not going to sale shit now.Give the money to the working people!Fuck all of them!!!!
My family lives in southeastern Michigan and works for the car industry and does NOT want a bailout just on principle. At all costs. And whats absurd is that the automotive industry is still not acting responsible or sensible in a time of crises; The fact that all 3 executives had to fly in on 3 separate jets to DC is so arrogant; how dare they. These CEOs are just upset they're losing their 25 million dollar salary.
I find it impossible to believe they didn't see this coming. In the 80s people were criticizing the car industry; no interest in new technology; Im not talking just about green cars but safety issues and of course quality of engineering. GM decided to invest everything into replacing people with engineering instead of improving technology. Instead of making better cars. Its still a joke; the legendary Poletown Plant.
What we need to do with the auto industry is invest into green technolgies and alturitve energy. However, both the CEOs and the unions got greedy, Heidi.

Wish I had the money to donate to the cause. I like the style. Could do without the "message from a viewer" at the beginning of every video.. but I understand why its there.
When are you guys going to do a segment analyzing some corporate news? I love to see that stuff. (Those interested who haven't seen it before, look up NLP or neuro linguistic programming)
Big3 Auto should turn to Big3 Oil for Bailout (Exxon etc...) After all the Oil companies are the direct benefficiaries of the Big3's gas guzzling SUV's.
OR they should go beg Saudi Arabia, or any of the foreign country where they have manufacturing and assembly plants in... like the new plant in Russia.
Leave the US Taxpayers alone!
It's not enough we buy the SUVs and the oil at $150/per fill up, now they want our tax dollars to bail their sorry asses out?
I like how RealNews can discuss issues W/O mentioning "Democrats/Republicans" No Spin, No financial interests. As soon as I start working in a few days, I'm donating.
When you have to rely on credit for things there is something wrong. Unfortunately this has been the "norm" for us for a while. But in no way should companies or people have to "rely" on the availability of credit. That is such a sham.
Green is BS extreme
Whats needed is proper cars with style again.

Much of the factories will be bought up by other auto manufacturers and the jobs will be saved.
Keeping these failing businesses alive just misallocates resources, and makes the recession last longer.
Bailouts are corporate welfare. Special interest subsidies are not in the "general welfare" and are unconstitutional under the 10th amendment.

Stats straight from UAW.

$75 hr is total cost with benefits
Transitiving 3 years ago
No, $75 is total cost with benefits + all retirees and pension with benefits. Current workers with benefits is around 42.
baseballnolie34 3 years ago
Does that 42 include pension?
Transitiving 3 years ago
42 includes "benefits", which I assume means healthcare and pension. I'm not sure though.
The actual hourly cost of the benefits is $10 so a "typical" UAW worker is making between 37 and $42/hour with all benefits included.
BTW, I may have misinterpreted what gcsecsi said above about CEO pay. I apologize for calling him a moron. :-(

Although the economy is screwed either way, waaay too much debt by individuals and the government.

crap what I wanted to say was:

SCARE TACKTICS 101
GM/Ford/Chrysler using UAW autoworkers as sacrificial lambs and threaten to do massive layoff if we don't give them 25Billion dollars.
Yo, put your hands up, it's a stick up, you heard? Give us your cash, or we'l start firing people!
and all the leaders in the house say 'AYE'....

If you were wondering where the bailout money is going...
Bank of America receives 15 billion taxpayers' dollars to keep it from collapsing and then invests $7 billion in China's Construction Bank (CCB).
Herald Tribune 2008 Nov 18
If we bailout the car companies, were do you think that money will go. I'm buying stock in vacation resorts and champagne companies.

NO WAY!
Sell off your Jets!

People, PLEASE, TRY to THINK.
Notice how fast & eager the regime was to give 5 TRILLION dollars to the transnationalist investors to bail out....who?...YOU??? NO!
The wealthy are using that money to buy up BANKS, NOT to help US citizens in financial trouble. Its a "VALUE GRAB", same as in the 30s.
Notice how they are GRILLING auto executives over a measly 25B!!
Why? Because the auto industry is a LARGE manufacturing base. They must destroy our ability to PROTECT ourselves with industry.

When you have to rely on credit for things there is something wrong. Unfortunately this has been the "norm" for us for a while. But in no way should companies or people have to "rely" on the availability of credit. That is such a sham.

Delphi (supplier of ford and gm) went down. it was a company in Detroit. This was in 2005.
More companies might go down..and also, in Britain government support didnt help. it just wasted the governments money

Why can't these auto makers, just make green trucks and cars. You can take any car or truck and make it electric, so why don't they do it?
I dont want my new car to run on fossils fuels, and will not buy another car or truck until I can buy an American made Green Car or Truck!
