@LokcedUot yes and no. They used a lot of words and phrases from the play, however, sometimes they used them out of context. i.e. they put phrases together that do not belong together

My theater group just voted tonight on what Shakespeare play to do and I voted Midsummer Night's Dream and it won out! Then when I got home I suddenly remember this film and had to look it up! It's my favorite Shakespeare tale and I love this interpretation. Very unique and the music is very interesting.

@MrBillybob12203 Yes but they took a lot of liberties. In Shakespeare, the nectar of the flower is placed upon their sleeping eyes and they fell in love with the first person they saw upon waking. There was a big mix up of the lovers in the play as well. The rest of the movie is pure fabrication. It's more of a movie about a school glee club doing Willy Shakes, rather than a movie based on his play.

@elfendustin I wouldn't say they took that many liberties. Yeah obviously with the text, but the plot is very similar. Not to mention it's very clever how they incorporated idea of the Mechanicals. They made the Mechanicals into the actors which is truly genius. So I wouldn't venture to say they took a lot of liberties.
