Christopher's father kills the dog and his mum is not dead, she ran off with mr.Shears like the slut she is.

So he was angry about what his wife did that he took it out on the dog?! That's cruel!

The Dad's excuse was Mrs Shears didn't want to get together with him, so he got mad. He was complaining about how Mrs Shears "loved the dog more than him" so when the dog started being unfriendly towards him after a fight he had with Mrs Shears, the Dad (out of blind rage) killed the dog.
