I read somewhere that back when these were first made there was a loophole in the German licensing laws that allowed people with a motorcycle license to drive any vehicle with less than 500cc's and that's why this car was built, to exploit the loophole because a motorcycle license was easier and cheaper to get than an automobile license so a lot more people were likely to buy this than a full sized car.
That's right. Back in the early fifties, we had a driver's license for motorcycles called "Klasse 4" that allowed to drive "vehicles up to 250 cc", not defining the number of wheels the vehicle might have. A lot of people prefered getting that license instead of the "real" one, the "Klasse 3", because they didn't have to do a practical driving test. In fact, Goggos and other 250 cc cars were later on despised for years as being made for "those who can't drive"!
I have a TS400, and know a guy with a Vespa 400, but we've not (yet) done a drag race with them. The Vespa only has a 3-speed transmission, which might limit it a little, but he takes his family on drives all the time with his. My Goggo has some engine problems (being rebuilt now), so I haven't had it over about 85 kph. I hope it'll hit 100 kph when it's back on the road.
Yes and no. It's fun to drive, but a Mini is much more "sporting" and more stable on the road. On the other hand, the Goggo is very easy to handle in maintenance and repair, since there's almost nothing that could break down...
wow, very cool. i have always loved goggomobil's and other microcars, they're very unique in their own way :-). i've dreamed about building up a microcar from ATV or street bike internals, but it probably won't happen. I always have dreams sorta like that. but you never really know what the future holds for ya i guess =)
Wow. Awesome car. These cars are the size of a couch. 2,90 m long, 415 kg and weigh half the size of a Smart car. It looks like it was going 65 mph? quite fast.
are this cars with a moped engine? or are it actually real cars? if it are mopeds i deffinitly want one i got an arola invalid vehicle search on youtube and you see what it is looking like very nice car you have there i sure want to drive that one time but i don,t think i could get a car like that fastly
Actually the Goggo engine is similar to the engine of a motorbike, with motor and gearbox included in one block. It has two cylinders and 250cc, so I wouldn't compare it to an invalid car. Just a very, very small automobile ;-)
Go-Go-Car!

Nice little car. My old man had one, I would have taken it of his hands if he hadn't sold it before I was born!
Does any one know how a Goggo TS400compares with a Vespa 400?
autouniondkw102 2 years ago
You mean the performance of the two? I don't know, I never drove a Vespa. The Goggo 400 has, compared to the smaller versions, a lot more power!
The Vespa 400 was built only in France (never in Italy) because of the Fiat Nouva 500 being introduced on the market in the same year.

The shift pattern is different from most cars.
matkovicha 3 years ago
That's true. 1st is in front at the left, 2nd at the right, 3rd is behind at the left, 4th at the right.
