When you can write a piece like this not too long after puberty (Mozart wrote it at age 17) there is no doubt that god put mozart here to fill the world with music. Every generation is blessed to discover it. I love and thank you mozart.
This is simply the greatest pianist of the 20th century. The playing is devoid of ego and always at the service of the music. Yes, you can put bells on it. But why?
Sadly, I couldn´t feel the emotion Too much technique and little expression, too stiff? Mozart was a playful musician not an uptight one.I thik Malcolm Fragner is more graceful. >>>>>>>>>>.
i dont understand everyone who says they can't criticize him unless they can do better... from that, you can't say you LIKE it unless you can do it better either... the point of music is that everyone can enjoy it or not regardless of their experience with the instrument or piece
In my opinion, in his old age, Sviatoslav Richter was able to reduce the phrasing to a minimalistic and so adequate effectiveness. Practically he was then phrasing mostly with the same fingers.

Mozart's first "own" piano concerto. His previous piano concertoes were based on works by other composers. Not bad for a 17 year old teenager !
His later piano concertoes of course sent most other composer of the time into oblivion. Richter performs this with great skill and empathy. Five stars.
iam impressed how Richter was able to interpretate many differents composers so well! he could play Mozart, prokofiev, schumann with the same abilitiy and musicality!!!
@Haeronthegreat i get a little the idiots here who leave a "happy" comment cause they have the sad need to say something, but idiots like you i dont get, if you dont like it just keep your based on nothing thoughts to your self
@8scatterbrain8, he is using sheet music because during that period he went through a series of memory lapses and he refused to perform without the music in front of him.
@8scatterbrain8 richter had a huge repertoire. Whn asked about this topic, he said it was impossible to memorize every single detail and author´s indication. Apparently it is not due to age or enything like that. He wanted to be loyal to composer´s notes to the limit
I will humbly ask all the persons to load a performance of their own of this concerto on youtube who are here to criticise Richter to show that they can do 'better' than him rather making futile comments.
Richter is one of the Titans on the keyboard. He is a prolific sight-reader also. Moreover, a marvelous personality without any ego problem or racistic chauvinism. One should prove his authority before criticising him.
@nirna1986 I totally agree, Richter was a great pianist and a wonderful individual.
Of course, like always some people feel the unresistable urge to pull down the work of a genius, it's always like that for some reason.. I am glad I'm able to enjoy and appreciate the work of a genius like Richter and Mozart, I pitty those who can't..
Hhhmm ..... No-one should doubt Richter's contribution to pianism. No doubt about that. BUT, what if you were presented with just the audio track of this performance and were told the soloist was a good looking 20 yr old who's just won a major competition and is contracted to record ALL the Mozart piano concerti? Be honest. (What's 'racistic'?) No, really - BE HONEST.
I disagree with what you say. Anyone is entitled to express his/her opinion even if this person can't produce the same performance. I love this video by Richter. I can't play piano. But in case Richter had completely messed up the concerto, why couldnt i say "Richter here played orrendously bad" ? I am the listener, not the musician. I can't play but i can listen and judge, and maybe say "I prefer Horowitz to Anda, I prefer Pollini to Richter". Just express your opinion with respect.
@nirna1986 In case you love this performance (as I do), express your opinion. but i think it would be better to accept also others' opinions as well, as much as we disagree with them. "You agree with me or you must shut up" is probably not among the best ways to speak about music. Finally, if not being a pianist means i can't say i don't like something means also that i can't say that i like it. According to ur reasoning i couldn't even understand what music is since i can't play.Happy listening

Does Roger Ebert have to write and direct a movie of his own everytime he criticizes a film??
@asianwhitenigger A person of your kind with a garabage vat inside the mouth is not fit for commenting anywhere. It shows shear lack of education and decency with those f****s and sh****s. Do you talk to your parents and elders in this way?

HELP !! All Richter Fans in the World: 5 Years ago i bought a CD with Richter but i lost it. On the C CD was: Fly of the Bummble, a schubert sonata, a rachmaninov piano konzert. and some other short piano works from different composers.
On the Cover was Richter coming out a big lake. The Cover was full of water and Richter stands in the middle. The Cd must be from Erato or Sony. I would buy it again. Does anybody know the title of this CD. Thanks a lot to all Piano friends in the world
This may have been one of Richter's last concerts, if not his last. I like the playing from his later years very much. Regarding the sight reading, he started performing with a score some years earlier. There was one famous memory lapse, but generally his memory was very good. He gave a very reasonable explanation for his choice. He said by using the score he could perform, more pieces. For him insisting on total memorization, and performing without a score was an unnecessary vanity.
Richter imho didn't age all that well, the overwhelming majority of his greatest efforts (to which this performance obviously doesn't belong) date back to the 50s and 60s
You need to capitalize IMHO, punkpoetry, or people may miss it and take your words for the final truth, which they are not. IMHO, Richter's best period was the 70th, and he aged better than almost any other pianist, in a sense of undiminished involvement and fresh ideas. He adjusted his repertoire with age, playing more of Bach and Mozart and virtually excluding Chopin. But I agree that this performance is lacking. The 1st PC in the same recital was great, but it is not an original Mozart :-)
One of Richter's "stiffer" performances - obviously lacking in Mozartean finesse. But it's no secret that Richter was not a Mozart enthusiast. He never quite found "the key to Mozart" (his words) - much preferring Haydn.
This is a seemingly simple and direct interpretation but an edition that very true to the heart of Mozart's early piano concerto. Richter do not exert sophisticated tones and is very honest to the score. Bravo!
Somehow I don't like this tempo, and it's so mechanical. Dynamics are too much of the same and played too blunt. Orchestra and pianist aren't always synchronized.
Mr. Richter's music will live on for centuries to come. He was amazing. You don't listen to his play with your ears; rather, you hear it with your heart.
Is he gay because of that remark. He probably understands music. It's a way to talk when we feel what we feel. UYou can never feel it so go back to your rap videos.
I meant it is a gay remark. You can't deny that, it's a matter of public record now, sorry. And why the hell do you think I'd even be here if I liked rap?
There are many who like both, of course they listen to M only superficial. I take it that you mean that the 'heart' thing is gay and not the 'centuries'. I've heard remarks like that many times by people that are certainly not gay! Suppose EggRoll is a woman?
And whocares if he/she is gay as he behaves decently? If he was 'dirty ' gay wouldn't he have said 'you hear it with your anus'? Mozartians often get carried away you know.
Listen sunshine, my own brother is gay, I have now problem at all with gay people. I didn't mean the comment was literally homosexual in nature, I meant it as an adjective, like the British use the term "kamp".
'Mozart worshippers' do take big words in their mouths sometimes, in all other contexts it would sound silly but when it comes to anything to do with W.A.,words are forever inadequate...

Agree- and all Mozart is great- I'm particularly partial to this, Piano 21-1st mov., Violin 3-2d mov. & Clarinet-2d mov--(see Andrew Mariner on Youtube) Haydn close second to Mozart
I love the contrast of emotions in Mozart's music! He is by far my favorite composer of all time...not to mention that these musicians did a lovely job with his work =)

He is by far my favorite composer of all time...not to mention that these musicians did a lovely job with his work =)

but i agree with u on how richter is thebest pianist. he is very good!

rather a mechanical , uneventful performance. His tone is just monotonous. And I liked Richter, in general.

In the 1990's. This was Richter's last recording of the Mozart concertos with his friend Rudolf Barshai conducting.

MOzart himself loved this concerto throughout his life and played in many times in his life. I think it is one of his best.
