How do you get it so that the drums from the song itself don't interfere with your playing? Just turning it down really low, or is there some special trick?

Moon really can't be compared to any drummer because he rejected most traditional drumming standards. What he was doing was completely unheard of back then, and even now nobody really plays like him at all. He was one of the most unique and original musicians in modern history.
