@AhmadPhilips WHY ? = Because if he ALREADY knows future events there would be VERY LITTLE, if any emotion INVOLVED. If you already KNEW a future event vs the event being a surprise to you, one can EASILY SEE what the difference in emotion would BE.
C'mon- figure that easy thing OUT . It's not that hard to see. Whew.
You may wear an outfit, act and/or look a certain WAY, as a representation to a doctrine you choose or attempt to adhere to, but realize, you're just another person. You've " chosen" something. And others whom choose too, believe that their blend of faith is better, more accurate, The "one" etc etc etc. This is LIFE= Group formation and competition. The particpation "of" illustrates that you evolved, were NOT cretaed by some angry, jealous, yet benevolant "god". Our behavior disproves doctrine.
@BigDreektrumptight Think about that for a moment, more deeply. People will always disagree with each other. This is how religions, sects, belief systems got started. This is WHY there are sunni, shia NOI, wahabi muslims. Hassidic, Messianic, orthodox jews. Catholic, jehova's witness, baptist, mormon christians...WHY ? Because humans have ALWAYS formed groups, compare & compete with each other in all aspects & on all levels of life. ALL living things compete. WHY ? Because we evolved. THINK.
@gblueslover2 It's not a test for God, it's a test for man. Just because God knows who will fail and who will pass the test, it doesn't make the test obsolete.

This is the practical description of an Imam today, this is what we experience 'on the ground' so to speak.
What the proper Islamic definition is, you would have to ask a religious scholar or an excelling (learned) student of knowledge this question to get a comprehensive answer.
An Imam is a Muslim man who has been given the responsibility of the administration and care of the masjid. He leads the prayers or delegates this role to other Muslim men who can recite Qur'an sufficiently. He gives the Friday khutbah or delegates this role to other Muslim men who have the knowledge to fulfill this responsibility.
He may or may not be a scholar. He may or may not advise the people in family and personal matters, each Imam being individually equiped or not for such matters.
