U should turn it back exactly like a top spin serve. However, also pay attention to control the angle when your blade reaches the ball and the power. Just remember: the stronger you hit, the less control you have.

rofl are you kidding???? he was a really good player and is respected by all, but even in his prime he never had the winning streaks like Wang Liqin, until 2007 Wang Liqin won like 80% if not higher of the major tournaments he entered for the past 2 years. 2004-2006 every major tournament he entered the finals were him against Ma Lin and he always won them. He has won more world championships than jan, who has only won one, and he has the most pro tour wins of anyone in history.

I would say that yes, you should work on hitting first. Looping and counterspinning, as they're doing here, are harder to master, but the techniques you learn in hitting will help you in the next steps. The reason you don't see as much hitting at the professional level is that they just don't get a chance to hit. Typically, the opponent opens up very quickly with a strong loop from either wing, and you can't flat hit a loop (unless your last name is Waldner.) Keep at it!
