Up til that point, the AFL was considered completely inferior, the Packers had destroyed the chiefs and the raiders in the previous superbowls. The colts were a great team. If that team had won superbowl 3, there's no doubt they would be considered one of the best teams time.

The patriots were 14 point favorites, the colts in superbowl 3 were 18 point favorites (double checked and realized I was one off from the actual mark). @gamelvr1 yes, but i do still consider it one of the greatest super bowl runs of all time because of what was at stake and how the giants weren't even picked to get past the wildcard game with tampa bay, and then they go on to defeat the team that had beat them twice that year and was 13-3 (i'll admit it was a bad win.) then they go on to defeat the guy whose considered the best quarterback of all-time, and then beat the undefeated team in the super bowl while being 14 point underdogs.

Actually it was in terms of how the media covered it. There was so much hype for the Patriots and their shot at perfection. Not a single person from the media even considered the Giants having a chance compared to some of the other teams that had upsets in super bowl history.

ESPN Sports guys- Jeffri Chadiha, Scott Symmes, Sheldon Spencer, Gregg Easterbrook, and Wright Thompson all picked the Giants.

Of the 15-20 ESPN guys who did take the Pats EXACTLY 0 thought it would be a blow out. All 20 thought it would be close in some way.

The biggest kicker is what fans thought. Favored at -12.5, fans OBVIOUSLY felt that the Giants had a better chance to beat the Pats than the Pats did to beat the Rams (-14).

The Patriots were +14 to the Rams which is 2nd and the biggest is the Jets who were +18 to the Colts.
