@TheJayTrain I envy you - I remember how I felt when I first heard The Jam as a 12 yr old boy, and seeing them live at Reading University a year later, in February 1979...life changing moments.
i met paul in 1997,talked for nearly an hour!!! he was very fond of SOUND AFFECTS and said it was his fav jam album. He asked me what was mine? i replied SETTING SONS and he could see my point, i said well you wrote them so your the boss!!! great meeting and a lovely fella,i was in awe of him but he knew i was a clued up fan and had time to chat.
@Musikovor are you joking? this isnt rock 'n' roll... rock 'n' roll was the arch-enemy of mods... rock 'n' roll was like elvis and gene vincent and chuck berry
Sh*t, I remember this like it was yesterday! Staying up late on a school night to watch them play this. They did an uninspired interview w/ the show's host Tom Synder after "Pretty Green" then closed the show w/ "Funeral Pyre" which was cut off as the credits ended!
This version has a much different groove than the album version, and the first word in the lines of the verses he starts a half beat behind the first beat, and plays that riff with the Bass in the beginning. Quite interesting. I wonder how long this was from the recordings for the album.
I recall watching this live on TV in 1981. A friend told me that Weller is playing a riff from Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" on it!
Sorry, I don't. In 1981 Video was a rich man's toy. I got to use my Dad's unit but had to scrounge for cash to buy tapes. A Video Cassette cost $25 each(that's like $60 today). Any taping had to be the bare essentials.
The funny thing is that I was just looking at a book in the Virgin Store yesterday called Punk 365 to see if the The Jam were in it and they were and it was a photo of them being interviewed on the Tom Snyder show. So I was curious to see if it was on Youtube and here it is.
Awesome, thanks for this :)

I recall Weller saying in an nme interview at the time that Sound affects would be a cross between Revolver and M. Jackson, so i guess you are right.
