  • Great short film. Excellent camera work.

  • Thanks for boring me to death

  • @dallasluce You are most welcome :D

    -Ryan

  • I'm a writer (of scripts) and am looking into making a short film. I am pretty young as a writer in professional eyes. Anyhow, I've written a series and I want to film it, mainly for fu, but I'm taking it seriously. I have actors, and a decent plot. anyhow, i was just wondering, what kind of camera id you use and how did you come about the underscore? (Where'd you find it/ did you write it?)

  • @777greggy1777 I filmed with a Canon XH-A1, but I would suggest something that films in full HD. I currently use a Panasonic HMC-40 and it is much, MUCH better.

What do you mean by "underscore"? The musical score? I wrote and performed it using Garageband with the Symphony Orchestra expansion pack.

  • @777greggy1777 Good luck as well. It is very fun filming and you will learn a lot.

  • for a first short film, thats crafty work. Excellent dialogue.

  • @placebo4yo Thank you :D

This short has opened up doors for me so I will hopefully be back to work on another short soon.

  • Do you have a trailer as well? We would love to showcase both on Trailer Wars! We will be beginning our monthly competitions for production and marketing prizes soon! Please follow our name link and visit us online!

    Team Trailer Wars

  • @TrailerWarsMedia Sorry, no trailer :( Thanks for the interest anyway :D

  • WOW THAT WAS A GREAT FILM..

  • Thank you :D

I appreciate you taking the time to watch and tell me that :)

  • Hey wow!!! :) I wanted to be a film maker but now I see I have a lot of enemies like you! haha ;D well done... its all great with song and clips...

    which program do you use?

  • @eceeryavuz Oh no, sir/ma'am. Not enemies. Friendly competitors :)

For editing, I use Final Cut Studio. For music, I used GarageBand with the Symphony Orchestra JamPack. I am, however, upgrading to Logic Pro later this month.

    Thanks for the comment :)

  • @AnarchyIncProduction thanks!

how old are you?? are you in a film school? do you want to become a director???

how did you learn how to shoot

  • @eceeryavuz Yeah, I am a Heinz 57 filmmaker. I do everything besides acting basically.

I refuse to go to film school. Film school graduates nowadays aren't respected and there are a lot of filmmakers who refuse to hire film school students/graduates.

I taught myself to shoot by filming bands/weddings to learn to come up with good shots on the fly and to think on my feet.

    I am 23.

  • @AnarchyIncProduction wow thats impressive. even though you are not trying to impress me but Im impressed :D

I do acting now and I will go to USC(Hopefully) next year and when I return to my country I will be what I hope I will be.. I guess

well good luck you deserve the best! :)

  • @eceeryavuz Thank you very much for the compliment :)

If I were you, I wouldn't go to USC. Ask any filmmaker and they will tell you to absolutely not to go to film school. Film school grads rarely succeed and are losing more and more work.

Most people now move to California and teach themselves how to make movies by making them with friends. You learn quicker and you retain your originality this way. It's also much cheaper :)

What country are you from, if you don't mind me asking?

  • @AnarchyIncProduction

I hear that a lot and Ive been thinking about it for two days now.. You are right, but I want to go to a good university in the USA and there are no other jobs that I would want... So its complicated :) I will probably study Media&Communication or commercial, its better to study at a uni. :)

Im from Istanbul and also paris!!

  • @eceeryavuz Just remember to take everything with a grain of salt. The film grads who succeed are the ones who didn't let film school warp their minds. I won't deny though that it is a great place to meet people.

If you do end up in California, message me if you would like to meet up. I always love meeting other filmmakers.

Istanbul and Paris, eh? Lucky you to have lived in two beautiful cities.

  • @AnarchyIncProduction Exactly! Its great to meet new people and have a good experience :) I sure will let you know! I hope I end up in california or new york :) You are lucky to live in california, you dont have to try to get there! haha :)

Yes they are really beautiful but theres always something missing :)

  • @eceeryavuz Haha, I don't live in California YET, but I should be there before you. I'm getting ready to move within the next couple months.

Good luck on getting there and I hope to see you there :)

  • Pretty damned good, though some of the intense symbolism from the original was lost..... it seems to be a different film of itself, though that is not necessarily a bad thing.

  • Thank you :)

I really wanted to make this based on my own interpretation of Reflection so I only wanted to include only a few specific things from the original to show that this was a related film. Other than those things, I wanted to make it very different.

Thanks again for checking it out :D

  • good job, though i thought some parts could have been done better, but i could not have done any better, so good job

  • Thank you for your honest opinion and for checking it out. Much appreciated :D

  • Ryan, Great work! You combined the right amount of post production F/X to some great cinematography. It was a good mix of shots that kept it visually interesting and I think the final reveal was well done. To me the big moment was not that he was dead, but that there was no brother. And the music was fabulous. Without that score, it would have been viewed as just another backyard video, but the music gives it the class and the quality that made it a winner. Good luck with your future projects!

  • Thank you so much for that, Mark. I wanted my first project to be as hard as possible as a means to really jump-start my filmmaking experience/learning and Reflection was certainly hard because I had to balance everything in the film (story, shots, music, angles) in order to give it the atmosphere this specific story.

To know that I did my job makes me happy, so thank you very much for commenting.

  • Sooooo much better than the rest of the shit that gets uploaded on youtube!

    Much Kudos!!

  • I'm just doing my part to show people what a YouTube video COULD be as a means to try and get rid of FRED and Chris Crocker.... :P

Thank you for watching, commenting and subbing!

  • I'm a big fan of Paxson Woelber's videos, and this definitely does "Reflections" justice.

  • WOW, thank you! It's always great to get reactions from other fans of the animated short.

  • Breath Taking.

  • Thank you :D

  • Good Short. I have a cuestion. Does a short film have to me at least 15 min short or could you reach at 30 min long?I'm creating a short film myself but it keeps reaching the script time like 22 min long. Could I present my 22 min long short film at a film festival? Help me please.

  • Hey, Sith. Thanks for commenting.

Shorts can be as short as a minute, or as long as 59 minutes.

It depends on the festival. I've seen festivals accept shorts as long as 59 minutes and I've seen other's only allow some as long as 10 minutes. The average festival has a 10 minute maximum length requirement. It's the bigger film festivals (Sundance, Cannes, SlamDance) that are more forgiving when it comes to length.

I hope that helps you out... If you have anymore questions feel free to ask : )

  • Damn, im so gutted! This looks so great! But I could barely hear what the voice-over was saying :/

  • Yeah, a couple people complained about that - the sound was edited to be played on better sound systems --- I have a version with better sound for computers on Vimeo where the narration should be clearer.

  • Oh, sorry for not replying xD

It tells me its a private video and I dont have the permission to watch it :(

  • Oh! Sorry about that! The privacy settings must have defaulted to that setting. I corrected it now so it's available for viewing! Enjoy : )

  • Bravo, sweet story!

    Filmed really really well too!

    Kudos to you man :D

  • Thank you very much! :D

  • Wow, that was great. I ...loved...the music. It worked so well with the story. Another thing I enjoyed was the lighting. It really enhanced the mood of the film.

  • I saw that you posted on John Murphy's facebook page and were asking him about his opinion, so it intrigued me. I'm a music composition/music education major, and I am looking to writing music for movies and video games. I really liked what you did with the music. It was really deep and flowed with the movie. I was wondering how you performed it.

  • I am so sorry for not responding - I thought I had.

I am going to try and do a screenshot tutorial on how I compose and perform my music. I will tell you this now though - I ignore timing. I believe that music is something that flows through you and that timing makes it too conformed and not as organic. Another way I keep it organic is mixing themes and motifs with improvisation. Sounds hard, but it actually is much faster to compose this way and, at least to me, more gratifying. Stay tuned! :D

  • Conversely, I believe timing is key. I don't depend on it though, because you're right in saying it makes it less organic. And mixing motifs and using improvisation is exactly how I do my own compositions! Thanks for the response and I look forward to the tutorial.

  • I really enjoyed your short, your music was really connected to the action. Very good. I just wanted to know, because it seemed so dark in places, were you shooting day for night? I've been in productions that have had problems with that and it looked like either you were running out of daylight or you were trying for that.

  • Hey Scott. Thanks for commenting and for that awesome compliment about my music - that made my day!

To answer your day-for-night question - no. In the scenes where it looks like I did that, I had brought up the blacks in the lows, mids and highs a little bit for effect. For example - on that country road. As I was color correcting it, I found out by accident that bringing up the blacks a little bit really made the yellow lane dividers POP.

  • That was important for me because it really symbolized him being stuck between heaven and hell - it's almost him literally riding down the edge of both as his journey progresses.

  • In just a couple spots we were losing light - as production went on, we had to film at very specific times to maintain the theme of time running backwards.

  • Fantastic work my friend. My wife and I watched it together and enjoyed all aspects of the production, music, story etc. Kudos for your first project. I am no film critic but I would be willing to say you should get a warm reception at the film festival.

  • speechless... you took one of my favorite animations and brought it to life. all i can say is im thoroughly impressed.

  • Thank you very very much.... I'm glad you liked it... I was kind of nervous making it, being that it would be remade based on my interpretation.... I'm glad people are digging it.

  • Amazing editing, love the production.

  • Thank you (this is Ryan from my main channel).

I just found out that it will be playing at the Salem Film Festival this year!

  • I live in Portland, When does Salem have a Film Festival!?!? I didn't know they even had ONE!

  • I think this is the 3rd, or 4th Salem Film Festival.

This next one will be April 17th - 26th.

  • Amazing film! Great job! Really blew me away with the score which really captured the mood and moments of the film. Great directing and capturing the Nature feel of it. If this is your only and first film, you must have been through film school?

  • Thank you very much for the compliment.

To answer your question I am actually very anti-film school. I was raised on movies and have wanted to make them since I was about 3.

I was too poor to do any actual filmmaking until recently. I was ran over by a car when I was 17 and spent the next year stuck in a chair healing so I spent that time studying film by watching every movie I could get my hands on.

Two years ago I got money from the accident and bought my camera and editing system.

  • What "dialogue" you had didn't sound natural. It sounded forced and contrived. Location's could have been chosen better. Too much time was spent on the bike scene and not enough was revealed about the character. Good attempt, but more time should have been spent in the creation of the dialogue to reveal enough about the characters so that the audience will be satisfied with the ending. But this is just my opinion.

  • No worries. I love constructive criticism and that's exactly what you left and without making it sound like your opinion is the final word so thank you. That is something that's very hard to come by on the internet.

I do have to argue one thing though and that is your comment about the locations.

Salem is a pretty boring place with few visually interesting places that would have fit into this film so I did choose the best ones available to me.

    Other than that - kudos.

  • I'm sure you chose the best locations you had. I should specify which one I meant. The scene under the bridge where the main character drowned. The water didn't look all that deep and he was very close to shore. Another nitpicky thing: drowning people flail a lot more on the surface until they finally are pulled under. Another nitpicky thing, is that I don't understand why he drowned, ie if he was caught in underwater vegitation or pulled under by the current of a fast flowing river.Good job ot

  • He drowned because he couldn't swim, hence, the flailing.

Remember - this is not the real world so the normal rules don't apply.

That's why I made the dialogue sound unnatural. I didn't want anything to seem natural because we aren't in the real world.

  • This was the best Shot film I've ever seen on Youtube. It was brilliant. An amazing, well written script. You filmed every shot so professional. The sky/water was so peaceful and really captured my attention. I honestly love this video.

    5 stars/Favorited

  • I highly suggest for everyone to watch this video in HD!

  • really good adaptation.

though your camera work and the score was amazing. i still felt you left out some of the best parts. like "i know who you are" quoted as the man is laying by the river. and the way you edited the original script was really good. though a few spots it seemed a little too much. the animation is still my favorite. but i loved this too

  • Yeah, but I just wanted to keep the essence of the original here and not copy the dialogue, although I couldn't help it with "You were always my favorite reflection." I was really tempted to keep some of the dialogue from the original, but then this version wouldn't be mine.

I'm really glad you liked it, though. I'm especially glad that you saw this as it's own film. Thanks for commenting :)

  • yeah i really loved it. and dont worry your edit of the dialogue was excellently played out but the only line i didnt like was "reading my favorite book" the rest was amazing. still 5 stars

  • Cool, thanks for the criticism. Constructive criticism is hard to come by (especially on the internet). I'm glad that despite it's shortcomings, that you still dug it.

    -Ryan

  • Pretty much shibby-ness to the fullest :) Great job best friend! Your potential is limitless. :)

    P.s. Briah says ahmahahahahahmahaaaaaaaaaaah.

  • Hahaha! Thanks!

Tell Briah that I said, "bwahmalahlahmaaaaaaahhhh."

  • Can't believe that's your first short Ryan! So well done! You should enter it to as many festivals and contests as possible as it's great calling card for all your mult-hyphenated talents! Major kudos to you!!

    xoK

  • Thanks ScriptGirl!

I was looking forward to your input the most since you're in the business, and you saying that just made my day.

Thanks for taking the time to watch it :D

  • Also - My ultimate goal is to get Robert Newman over at Endeavor to watch it so I think I'm going to start burning DVD's like crazy and sending them to Endeavor as well as other agencies. I heard that that's a good thing to do to get some attention from an agent...

  • professionally done and awesome! I loved it...so does everyone I am showing!

  • Whoever is marking my comments from my ryangfilm channel as spam, please stop it.

  • Dude i love the effects and camera angles you use in this movie this is gonna be gonna be nomanted to be in my movie awards contest! 5/5

  • That was amazing Ryan,Brilliant work,5 stars, and I will share this.

Btw,what is AnarchyIncProduction? Is this anothier youtube? Subbed my freind,And applause to you for this Great work.

  • Anarchy Inc Productions is the name of my production company. I'm glad you liked it and thank you so much for sharing this.

  • Hey Ryan, It is amazing to see the way you had a dream of Reflection and produce your short film.

Mann This is better than I thought it would have been the way you had use the camera and special effects Good job

  • Thanks, Steve, I really appreciate that!

  • A cinematic masterpiece. I hate shaky camerawork and although this included some, it wasn't annoying such as "Bourne" which was continuous!

Acting, editing and score were all first class and the film itself didn't drag. A well deserved 5 stars. I know how much patience it takes to get something finished!

    5 out of 5

    Pete

  • Thank you!

Yeah, I really hated Bourne 2 and 3 because it's like, "Choose an angle, man!"

I wanted to add it a little for effect.

  • It was so worth the waiting! The music was way cool. Seriously... it's the best score for a short film I've ever heard. Not making that up.

The look of the film is fantastic. I see you took a lot of time mastering it. Love the whole biking scene. It just rocked.

Garritt was superb, the V.O. was good too!

Only thing I would have changed is the font of the captions... but that's so minor.

Five stars man. The score gets six. You did fucking great! Hope it gets featured!

  • This is great! Thanks for the music!

  • Ryan...i was very touched by your movie! Really great...the music is the best! Go for it! Someday, someone will put your name for leading the way!

  • I'm really glad you liked it. Thank you for that awesome comment. It makes it worth all the work put into it.

  • Finally! Its here!!! Um I'm at work now. but I will watch it when I get home!

    K? Love ya!

  • That's cool. It still needs a little time to convert to HD.
