Union Busting 101 - Episode 1

Unions are not the new evil, been around for 200 years. Learn you history. Big Corporate and Banking influences, as well as undue influence of the mega-rich is turning this country into a country of have's and have-nots. The labor movement advanced this country ahead of all others. Look to third-world countries with low wages and they are all poor. All countries- European, and those with higher wages all have high union membership. Mexico has no legitimate labor movement, look at them, others.

Unions are the new evil. Their only concern is their members. Not the company. Not the society as a whole. Unions need to be broken, busted and torn apart if this country is ever to get back to where it used to be. Excessive union accommodations have created an unsustainable product cost which makes it cheaper to simply move jobs overseas.

Way to go unions!

Low wages and no government regulation, and the right to perform human rights violations, child & slave labor; to say American workers have to learn to compete with that is total ignorance- unless you are one of the one's who stands to gain from the exploitation of other human beings. @petersdraggon Typical. Thinking the unions are the answer when clearly they are not. Any wonder why all the auto manufacturing plants in the South never needed a government bailout? It's because not one of them is unionized which means not one of them has to deal with bullshit deals that benefits the union worker. I know how union operate from personal experience. Their primary function is to limit access to workers in order to artificially inflate the hourly rate they can charge.

@captwasabi Unions may not be the answer to everything but in regards to the southern plants- been to some of the suppliers that pay their works just a little over $8 an hour, then cast them off like yesterday's newspaper when they get hurt or sick. Some are treated worse than cattle. AS far as the Asian assembly plants, they have a different culture treating workers better and they don't have all the lavish salaries at the top. And, they did take stimulus money and tax incentives to build.

@captwasabi Your response is typical of anyone who hasn't been around and seen what many of us have seen. Also, a few years ago, the IRS was chasing the Asian companies because they refused to pay their taxes and simply said 'the dog ate it" when asked to provide income statements. This comes on the heals of the states giving away the farm to get them to locate there. The subsidies and manipulations are said to give Toyota Camrys a $2K per car advantage over a Chevy Impala.

@captwasabi Many workers in the southern Asian plants actually work for suppliers or feeder plants. Many earn barely more than minimum wage and rely on government subsidies and don't earn enough to pay in to the tax system. They pick the poorest communities. Workers at the assembly plants earn more, the company knowing they will call a union if not treated better. The feeder plants have a lot of intimidation, everyone knows they will be fired if they seek to improve their lives.

@captwasabi The Asian and German manufacturers in the south have all feed at the public trough using millions in taxpayer monies in subsidies. It's a fact, sorry you don't like it. Richard Shelby, R-Alabamba has given more tax dollars away than anybody at a time he professes he wants government to stay out of the "free market". These are the EXACT SAME tax benefits that US automakers get in the north. The difference here is that the US AUTOMAKERS needed to get bailed out yet the automakers in the south did not. Assemblers didn't design the Vega, Pinto, Gremlin, or a host of other turds, those were non-union descisions. 80% of the jobs shuttered and outsourced since GW took office have been non-union.

@captwasabi Toyota was considering building a new factory in Alabama but settled for Ontario, Canada instead; reasons given: Lower cost of healthcare in Canada, and more educated workforce. If we don't do something to control healthcare, more and more Americans will be without it plain and simple. The Republicans weren't going to ever do anything to address the issue especially with people like Bill Frist who owns a healthcare organization. The vaunted private sector hasn't controlled costs.

But as a more direct response to your statement about health care costs, what good is health care reform if unions can just opt out of it? If the unions are not part of the health care system then where are the cost savings? There were some really good plans coming out of the right but thanks to Obama and his "We won" stance none of them were even examined.

@captwasabi Some unions have their own healthcare plans that are cheaper than what is out there in the private sector because they take the 20-30% bloated over-charges out of the equasion like "Dollar Bill" McGuire- CEO that earned some $1.7 Billion. There are many, many, public utilities that run more efficiently and cheaper than private ran ones because of the overhead for all those sucking the teet. There are more public-ran utilities than privately ran, for that reason.

There is not one single government run venture that operates at a greater efficency compared to private sector and that's a fact. I have nothing against the private sector- all for it but I don't want the lowest bidder delivering my mail because some greedy son-of-a-bitch like yourself will hire someone from Guatemala to do it. Look at the huge cost over-runs in the military- CBO estimated $30 Billion last year by unscruplist "private sector" contractors. I recently had my bathroom remodeled and the contractor charged $900 per day labor for one guy.

Unions artificially limit the number of workers in a field, especially the labor fields, in order to drive up their hourly rates. As for capitalism and bailouts are mutually exclusive. IF we stopped with the bail outs and sent a clear message that they will never happen again then business would learn to police themselves after the first few failed.

@captwasabi Actually, I found out the contractor was non-union and the work was done by poorly trained non-union workers. Had they the training the union trades people get the work would have been done better and probably at about the same price or sometimes less. Look at the car dealers in primarily the low-wage south- most pay their technicians $12-13hr. but still charge $100 bucks hr. labor. All the labor savings aren't being passed to the consumer with the driving down of wages.

Those countries with more social leanings all had better regulations in place. We build millionaires ball stadiums and shopping centers with our money. The income gap is at it's highest percentage since 1929. Capitalists outsourced America. Jack Welch said the perfect factory would be on a barge to float around and exploit labor. I worked as an organizer for a large international union for 4 years. This is an excellent series and explains union busting better then any academic text I have ever seen.

I highly recomend this video for any progressive student out there.

Real worker wages were down during Bush, CEO salaries up 200%. Bush tax cuts targeting the rich didn't trickle-down! There are now 400 families owning more than the bottom 150 million Americans.
