I found the star on the secret slide by accident. I just went over the edge and landed close to the finish line. I couldn't figure out why a star appeared. I thought it was a glitch, but it turns out you get it for finishing fast enough.

the one spinning down cool, cool mountain might be a "trick" but it's much faster to just longjump down from there you begin and land the same place (or rather at the bottom, by the spoinning heart) then you can just do a couple of fancy wall kicks and you got the star before you know it - it's not even hard

i love the first star on here but i just jump off right as the lvl starts and kick back to land at the star a bit more tricky i just put a vid up on how to get on top of the castle without 120 stars check it on its my frist so i would love some feed back

i learned the jumping around trick on my first go around in the game, and i got it at midnight and discovered it at around 3:30 a.m.

well i've played this game a lot more young and i already knew that tricks, LOF trick can be shorter than that, actually if you jump just when you go out from the tunnel to the left you fall in the other tunnel :)

@Nmajmani on the ds version, the first time i ever got slip slidin away, i used that shortcut. because of my fail-ness, i only managed to defeat the penguin once i'd unlocked luigi.

On thge "phasing out one" the penguin know you cheated and you are automatically disqualified!

Phasing our is primarily used to get the star if you have trouble down the slide. Unfortunately, as you said, it is not usable against the penguin
