I used to watch these aircraft when i was a kid ,flying in formations. What a sight!! and the sound!! WOW! I was fortunate one day to see a practice scramble, when i was with my dad, in his lorry, passing by RAF Scampton. There were sign all along the road then, "NO STOPPING" so dad slowed down so we could watch. Their takeoff, was a staggered, 3 of abreast. As soon as the wheels of the VULCAN left the ground, they were almost vertical. The sound of those engines will stay with me for ever.
I see that takeoff and I am impressed, but then he rolls into at least 70 or 80 degrees of bank at low altitude and you can watch the airplane slip downwards and lose several hundred feet of altitude. I know the plane has some capabilities, but you sure don't execute them to their fullest on the first flight in "how many" years. Reckless.
@hehavenoname I think he is reckless. You cant just toss big planes like that around. At 60 degrees of bank, you need 2 Gs to maintain level flight. At 75 degrees you need 5 Gs to maintain level flight. The plane was rated for 3 gs, so on the planes first turn, he pushes the plane to it's limit or beyond it. Proper test pilots take it easy, and don't show off
Search for the C-17 crash in Alaska and the B-52 crash
I have met Dave Thomas and seen this beautiful plane up close, even inside it
@dano670 this aircraft was perfectly capable of making that. He did not put it under any unneccesary stress or anything like that or take t to its limits! My dads mate is one of the main engineers.
What a class act...you can't tell me that this plane doesn't look completely bad-ass! When she lifts up into the sky, and you see that silhouette from behind...
Surprisingly for a big delta winged aircraft, the angle of attack on approach is not all that steep compared to the Mirage III fighters we used to have here in Australia at about the same time the UK had the Vulcan in service.
Not sure which is the more impressive - the sight or the sound. I still remember these flying operationally, we'd always rush out into the garden when we heard one coming - and by God, you could here them coming!
A team of air cadets from 1122 (Marmion) Squadron ATC will be cycling 30 miles on the 12th of June, from their squadron HQ to DCAE Cosford in Shropshire to raise money for XH558 - you can help support them here! -

@2walsall According to wiki, it was surpassed in the Gulf War of 1991 by USAF B-52G Stratofortresses flying from the continental United States (32 hours) but using forward-positioned tankers. I think the USAF B2 Spirits beat that in 2003(ish) during Operation Iraqi Freedom - some 44 hours in the air I think, although I stand to be corrected!
I fully appreciate your comment but I dont think a B52, or B2, could perform the same manouvers as the vulcan. She is a truly a great old lady. Not to undermine the rep of your bombers but I would like to see a B2 do an aggresive climb and barrell roll like the vulcan. Heres a thought, a afterburning version of the vulcan, hmmm?
According to the VulcantotheSky website, it needs to raise 630,000 quid in the next 75 days to remain solvent. One wonders if Lottery would have given 6 mil to VTS if Lottery had known VTS couldn't pay for operating costs, or if Lottery had known VTS would need this huge amount of annual donations just for operations.
Nice! But...at what cost? Is it worth TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY to fly it? Vulcan Operating Co told Lottery that airshow fees would pay all costs for sustained operations. Now, we're finding out that's not true. Sorry, guys, but TWO MILLION POUNDS ANNUALLY was never gonna come from airshow fees. A blind man couldda seen that before you started. I seem to recall the RAF retired it because, aside from being old, it was also EXPENSIVE TO OPERATE. VulcantotheHANGAR!
@RcUniverseGuy first of all, this surely isn't a piece of shit! imo its one of the most beautiful and spectacular aircraft ever built! btw: thx to the brits! "YOUR" planes that hover were invented in germany and in the uk! and since you dont know shit about REAL aviation, stick with your RC crap and get some history lessons first, before you open your stupid mouth!
It IS strategic bomber - that means it doesn't have to be very maneuvarable. Such high level horizontal bombers designed for FAST flight and payload deployment on straight run. Besides - what you have seen - was low speed maneuvers, so you can't really tell anything about it from this video...
Fantastic, i went on her when i was in the air cadets, they guys there were on about getting her flying, now about 12yrs on im watching it. well done all involved
Why? What did you do to restore her? I live a mile away from Bruntingthorpe... People here in Leicestershire have worked tirelessly to get her flying... She belongs right here.
Wonderful. What an awe-inspiring aircraft. I have only ever been close to one that is a museum piece, but you still get some idea of its raw power. If you don't love the Avro Vulcan, then you ain't got no soul. :)
i don't think theres any other similar aircraft in millitary use today that has anywhere near the agility of the vulcan....impressive when you think it's design started in the late 1940's

So why could this be her last flight? I didn't donate my money just for a handful of flights. I want her in the sky, not in a bloody museum, we have plenty of those already. IT BELONGS IN THE SKY, SO KEEP HERE THERE!!!!! Can you tell that I'm a bit miffed about this!

She is actually highly manoeuvreable, especially for a plane of her size. The displays don't always reflect this...she is an old girl after all.

If you knew anything about it, you'd think VERY differently.
qwertdr 2 years ago
She has very high manouverability, some pilots who flew her often named her a fighter because of it - when she was actually a bomber.
She's also one of the loudest planes in the world, when I saw one taking off she made a earthquake.
