@meccaturbo deer aren't stupid, they just have very low perception of how potentially life threatening a car can be at high speed. It was probably wanting to cross the road, and being in near complete darkness did not realize that they were in a zone that contains fast moving metal objects. Even with the oncoming headlights the deer had very little amount of time to react to save it's life
