They're stick hand grenades, meaning below the explosive grenade part is a stick handle to hold it by that allows for increased throwing range. What happened in this video is that the explosive head broke off as the soldier tried to throw the grenade, and then stick probably went out of the trench. The head of the grenade, the important part, certainly didn't, though.
