Thanks for the review of Autotune, not being a musician myself I was wondering what people were talking about and your demonstration and especially the comparisons help immensely. Unfortunately I think I now notice it much more in a lot of popular music; in particular at the beginning and end of a note it has a really funny way of bringing the recording into phase lock with the note frequency.

rather than k-pop, i prefer j-pop & j-rock, they have talent, both the cd track & live sound the same, unlike k-pop. same goes as Lady Gaga, Rihanna & so on. while Linkin Park better in live than in the cd track. artist/band who used auto-tune, won't go far, even if they do become famous, but their song doesn't last long. that's why Metallica, MJ become legend, cuz of their talents & they can perform really well even without using auto-tune.

Just to point out, people don't use autotune and vocoders because they can't sing, because it doesn't make them sound like some sort of singing god, autotune is just a nice little effect to make your voice sound robotic and cool, and I personally love it!

Yes, it's used as an effect, but it is being used largely as a pitch correction device with those that can and can't sing. It's considered something that can make a not so great performance sound better and a great performance even better. Nearly all songs out there have some bit of tuning used, and it's lowering the bar for what it takes to be a good singer. It's destroying musical integrity in music.

I had a bad feeling, a portent I guess about Auto-Tune when I first read about it in the 90's. I felt it had the potential to water down the talent levels required to break into the music industry. I know others had used it before her but in 98 when Cher released Believe I knew I was right. The best/worst example of this is Rebecca Black, as hard as it is to believe that 3 minutes 48 seconds of nails on a chalkboard (cats fucking?) reached 58th on Billboards Hot 100... music lovers, were doomed.
