So fortunate to have been able to hear this while it was relatively new, even admittedly though I'm one of those bloody fat Yank wankers.
Life was good to be so near college radio back 30 plus years ago. {WCNI- New London, CT.} They just emanated education...even for those of us too poor, dumb, drunk, dopey, etc..to have gone to school there.
Tune in and hear The Stranglers, or tune into everything else and hear non-stop Boston, Van Halen, and The Bee Gees.
You were lucky, so much of the USA missed all this great stuff. I'm "friends" with a guy from Berlin who grew up on the "wrong " side of the Wall in East Berlin, and he was able to listen to all this great music in perfect FM Stereo from the "British Forces Broadcasting Service" as the British, French and the USA still had small troop contingents in Berlin. I've always found this incredibly ironic. The Bee Gees in LA, The Stranglers in East Berlin !
@2000toddowen Good post mate: knowing what u r: so important, and it aint your fault u were not born English. Our empathy is with the decent yanks , fk the idiots!
At 15 this tune was exactly what I needed in my life. Growing up in the 70's I wa so fucking bored. Then along came the punk era, and I knew that my time had come!
@LandHo12345 Jeez! Jet's 72...just can't grasp that! saw them first in '77,many more times after and just latley in September gone (Stormin The Castle) That man is whoa! x x
This song is amazing i love the keyboard part to it. the word's to it mean a lot if you actually listen to them. my favorite line from this song is. "but the worst crime i've ever done was play some rock n' roll" love that part. and 1:50 through 2:30
My pleasure ! I just upload songs on impulse, so there's quite a few more Stranglers classics in there. And when I uploaded "Nice n' Sleazy" I thought nobody will listen to that, it's been uploaded so many times already. How wrong can one be ?! Over 21,000 views.
Well there was a bit of a music revival in the mid-90s with the likes of M-People, Prodigy, Elastica and Bjork. And in the 60s there was the likes of The Animals and early Ska. But that's about it.
I've got 2 tickets for Shug doin' Ratus in May...just listened to some of his solo stuff on youtube (have no desire to see the "new stranglers" without him) and I hate to say he's past it...shite...very bad...ah'm sellin'...Edinburgh May 8th
Funnily enough, "Peaches" is the only song on the album I don't like ! TOTP wouldn't let them play it, and if I remember rightly it was released as a double "A" sided single, so they would play "Go Buddy Go" on the show. But yes, the rest of the album is sheer class.
There were a few "breakthroughs" into the charts. The Sex Pistols of course who were # 2 (when they were #1 !) with "God Save The Queen", and "Honk Kong Garden" by Siouxsie And The Banshees went straight into the Top 10 in 1978.
Well here we have it, I was living way up country and drowning in a sea of Supertramp and Robin Trowsers and suddenly there was this single, the Damned's New Rose and Neat Neat Neat and the Pistols Anarchy.... tip in a dollop of speed and drop of acid, result. Great times, if a little hazy nowadays.
Like it! I can relate with it! haha It does sound oddly prog too, musically anyway. I know you'll hate me or saying that! hahha But the attitude and lyrics are punk all the way! 5 stars!
There's another reason I uploaded this, as there's a version already on YouTube, but it said "not available in your country". I'm still wondering if it's because of this masturbation innuendo.
All of which reminds me of the Monty Python, which the BBC hardly ever censored otherwise, when the guy is asked his hobbies, and he says "Strangling animals, golf, and masturbation", and they BBC made them take out "masturbation"!
Not available in your country!? Its only innuendo! I've seen much worse on this site! Ha! That is great, bloody BBC and its censorship, I am sure over here that would fly, as there is far worse being said on television, these days anyway.
Well the BBC were a bit odd in those days. They'd let far worse than that through, but for some reason known only to themselves they took severe exception to this on this occasion !
No one can compare to The Stranglers! Their first 10 years were truly astounding.

Every track on this albun - ratusnorvegicus - is a gem.
It's amazing to think that, apart from Peaches, none of them went close to the top 20.
But then again, EVERYTHING good back then was heavily underground, including the best, soul & reggea.
The general consensus being that if it was mainstream, it was shit
kevintheshedend1976 2 years ago 2

one of their best I think...is this spelling taken from the cover? never see it in this kind...however a good and typical song of them...
flaming0moe 2 years ago
Yes, the spelling is directly from the cover.
There was a lot of controversy at the time as some newspapers implied the song was about masturbation. Will that translate ?
The Stranglers and most journalists/newspapers did not like each other - and that is a big understatement !
