@69phmike We must have been listening to two different interviews. Bette very carefully & diplomatically avoided giving an actual opinion on Susan's voice. She made it clear it was a popularity contest for the underdog. She described Susan's "style," which is singing straight and from the heart. Susan CANNOT SING. She has pitiful technique, and almost no power in her middle range. She has become famous because, "The British love the mediocre man who is modest about it."
@k1w1Jax Yeah holy crap she's really laying on the backhanded compliments and damning with faint praise, isn't she? MEOW the claws are out apparently...
I hope when Bette said Susan had no life before, that she later regretted saying it quite that way. I like Bette Midler and her music but just because someone isn't famous doesn't mean they have no life. If anything, I think one has more of a life, just being able to be one's self and not having to worry about every hiccup spread across the tabloids. Susan's life before made her who she is, someone very genuine and nice.
Terrible video you need to redo it OP. I skipped to Midler but there were still problems. And she didn't throw Susan under the bus, in fact she likes her voice. I would like to hear what Bette thinks about Jackie Evancho's voice.
just to correct what i say in reply to @butimar68:
there is a sense of proportion lost here - by any merit, if of any relevance, Bette Midler is a far more accomplished entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show", and quite possibly all alike shows, together
she may not appear sweet, but what she is saying is frank and sympathetic - in any case (even with better video), she is not famous for her "sweetens" but for quick wit... and quite a number of other things :)
There's an undertone of jealousy and condescension among the hosts and especially Midler. Susan Boyle is what she is. She's not "Hollywood establishment." Boyle was invisible for most of her life and was highly talented. She deserves fortune and to be exposed for her gifts. Fuck these people.
@bonzelite On the contrary, Midler was far more supportive than what you're assuming... You must have a dislike in her to say that. What Bette was in fact getting at, was wondering if the production already knew Susan was good, from private audition which we see in X-Factor, or even Amrican Idol... I'm not sure anymore about America's Got Talent, however Britain's Got Talent auditions were indeed Live... I'm sure Bette confused the differences in shows, but did not "diss" her at all.
after this video Bette Midler's not as sweet for me as I thought for years. you can feel her jaleousy. "no life"????? it must be hard to understand giving up on or postponding your own needs for a loved one's needs, if you're another example of self-centered menatlity.
@butimar68 she is just her very frank self - she actually says: "...basically, had no life until she..." (in terse video) all her comments are also sympathetic - and astute - i haven't heard anybody publicly quizzing the (apparent lack of) logic of that "you tube" video (come on!)
it's a bit hard to appear sweet when they don't want you to... mind you (!), by any merit, Bette Midler is far more successful entertaining artist than all the judges on "that particular show" together
I think Bette Midler is right about certain times being right for certain artists, like Susan Boyle and like Bette herself in the late 60s early 70s. This is a time for Susan Boyle and it looks like she's making the most of it. Her early version of "Cry Me a River" is just incredible, maybe the best version of that song ever recorded.
Great talent!! ... There are some amazing artists, still unknown, just waiting to be discovered. Please visit my channel to discover one of these... an artist I really believe in and who I feel desreves a break.
I am a little confused to as Bette's Vegas show ran for two years 2008-2010, at least two of her last records were nominated for Grammy's and her last compilation record went # 6 in the UK. Please if you feel the need to criticize at the very least get your facts correct. a
Great talent!! ... There are some amazing artists, still unknown, just waiting to be discovered. Please visit my channel to discover one of these... an artist I really believe in and who I feel desreves a break.
Yes, Bette you are right..Im so sick of the riffing...all that singing of the scales in the middle of a song...thank God Susan doesnt do that,,,and neither does Bette.
@DAVEJJR and FranBMan I think we need to remember this is how Bette Midler and a lot of Americans speak especially New Yorkers. And Bette Midler has been a professional for many years and has been asked what she thinks and is handling the question with typical Bette Midler directness, an honest professional critique as she sees it.
I think Bett was truthful about what she said about Susan. She didn't say a bad word about her. Susan herself told reports and such that she didn't have an exciting life. Her mom wanted to be a singer and encouraged her. There just wasn't a way to do it until this show came along.
PS. Bett, stop having surgeries! Almost didn't recognize you!
i used to think bette was the coolest chick out there. i have lost all respect for her. susan paid her dues, showed what real courage is, and sings like an angel. shame on u bette.
Susan did have a life before, she looked after her mum. I don't think she followed a career in singing at that time, because she had a job to do. Mum's are special. That was a wonderful part of her life too.
she basically had no life???? wow that's snobbery. Susan Boyle herself said she led a content life. She wanted to be a singer but she never claimed not to have a life it was just a very calm settled life without the cameras, the fame, the attention and she supposedly loves to return to her quiet life after the zoo of fame
@dixiedragon54 I think what she meant was that in comparison she had no life. In comparison to what she was before the show and after, she may have been content but you cant tell me her life was exciting.
enasha. So true. My sentiments exactly. That HEART is what sets Susan apart. The girl most definitely got heart. I just love it that she's so humble and unpretentious. This too sets her apart. She has so much more going for her than just talent. She's a pretty lady. I ADORE her.
Anyone who doesn't recognize Bette Midler's talent doesn't know anything about music or performing and is not giving her credit for her incredible intelligence and verbosity. She is not dissing Susan Boyle. Susan has a great voice but has she been performing for six decades like Bette? When Susan's career has the longevity of Bette's then you can start comparing them.
Bette tried to answer that last question without seeming arrogant. Most American stars if they decide to tour abroad consider it a given that they are already famous in whatever country they decide to go to. This includes the UK. Sorry...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Bette's comment about Susan Boyle and her choice of a "faith based" song is ridiculous. "I Dreamed a Dream" says just the opposite of a dream realized. If anyone listens to the song, it's about NOT achieving one's dream; it states that "life has killed the dream I dreamed". Midler is a good example of untalented audacious voice that is thrown out at the audience. While the power in their voices is similar, Midler is not in the same magnificent league as Susan Boyle.
@annmason24 I think Midler was actually talking about Boyle's CD--which has a lot of faith-inspired songs on it. As far as Midler being untalented--well, she may not be everybody's type, but she's one of the most gifted song stylists that have come along in a very long time.
Susan Boyle sang in bars too and shopping malls, weddings, she couldnt even get her foot through the door in the music business cause no one would take her seriously, Bette Midler is a tough talker with a strong personality and even though Bette Midler may question the shows authenticity she cannot deny the remarkable success of Susan Boyles dream. Its not about choosing the right song, or being an underdog, its about Heart, ITS ALL HEART.
The Venue that Susan Boyle had the pleasure of entering? Its not that pleasurable to stand in front of an audience and be critically judged on your appearance and age and then laughed at, but she did it not with pleasure but determination and spunk. Bette Midler may have worked hard in her career as a singing artist, but to say Susan Boyle never had a life before her fame, Putting her down cause she was 47years old, unemployed when she came on Britains Got Talent. Bette Midler just jealous!
@cosg9531 I'd have to disagree! At 50 Bette had a much stronger voice than susan, and a hell of a lot more control.I don't understand why people are going off at Bette! She was asked what she thought, and spoke highly of Susan!
I truly do not believe that Ms. Midler was condescending at all. When she started in the business, it was "not" all rosey for her, and she knows of the struggles. So to have a venue, like the one that Susan Boyle had the pleasure of entering, was quite appreciated. Back in the early days, Bette had local bars and if your real lucky The Ed Sullivan Show, but you really had to know someone to get unto that show. All in all, I strongly believe that Ms Midler was quite happy for Ms Boyle.
By the way, I had to hit the "Dislike" button for this one, simply because Bette Midler seems so condescending - she seems almost bothered by the success of Ms. Boyle; her body language implies that she is actually VERY uncomfortable talking about Ms. Boyle's great success. Too bad for Bette Midler...
There is a comment here about Bette Midler saying that Susan Boyle has NO LIVE before she became famous with her awesome I Dreamed A Dream rendition.
I agree with the comment that says that Ms. Midler sound condescending with that remark. Susan HAS a life before - now she has a different life, and life where she is an inspiration to so many of us who also would like to dare act on our dreams.
Love Susan Boyle, her story, her voice and her guts! Bette Midler, get off your high horse!
of course if you make it in America you made it in the whole world.. with so many ethnic groups and nationalities it makes an artist well known in every corner of the world.
In reference to Susan (and by implication the rest of us), Bette says, "she had no life" before being seen on Idol (4:00). How condescending. Ordinary people have no lives worth considering compared to celebrities. Celebrities and their lifestyle would not exist without the acclaim of ordinary people.
@dsteinmetz1 - Play it again and keep listening. "I especially love an underdog.." and she does. She's based her whole life and career looking out for the underdog, and being a voice for them. Listen to "Hello In There" "Millworker" "Shiver Me Timbres" and on down the line. Her work for NYRP is all about providing what is essential to those who don't have it....thru green spaces, education, community activism....Bette is the real deal. Read her book "View From A Broad" -
@dsteinmetz1 She said it in context to prior reports, and it was not "Idol", it was Britain's Got Talent. Get your comments correct, before you besmirch others commentary, okay.
My two most favourite singers in the world. I never thought anyone could match Bette for me but Susan has. I love them both and if those two got together ~ well, it would be absolute mayhem because they would crack jokes non stop!
bette is a fave of mine - her voice, her honesty, her essence. she really is the consumate performer, as well as an altogether genuinely great human being.

Bette Midler is actually a very pretty woman now. when she was young she was always some kind of a happy clown to look at.

Is there any way you can get the entire interview of Bette? We would be very grateful.

Yes. I was fascinated by it. It looks like some kind of glass beads mixed with pearls. Beautiful and stylish, and she looks fantastic for 64.
