first cousin means the son of your aunt/uncle. first one removed is the son of that child (ie, your aunt/uncles grandson). So if I have an Aunt Susie, her son John is my first cousin, and John's son mike is my first cousin once removed.

I'm not sure what it means, but here are two possibilities, which seem plausible to me.

1) One's once-removed cousin is the child of one's cousin, one's twice-removed cousin is the grandchild of one's cousin, etc.

2) One's once-removed cousin is the cousin of one's father or mother, one's twice-removed cousin is the cousin of either of one's grandfathers or grandmothers, etc.
