  • lets see that egine and it in motion

  • keep it right up against the governor baby. nice stuff

  • what a beauty!

  • TA turbo aftercooled

  • Now THIS is when a truck was a TRUCK! Beautiful rig... Reminds me of when I was a kid...

  • How would this engine compare to the kta 600

  • @jarl44

still shouldnt be an issue, imho its all a con to me, computer systems have made it impossible for something these days to run nasty, is is worth it to have the newer diesel trucks have half the fuel mileage of the older ones?

  • What do the designations mean in the Detroit numbering? I assume the 6V, 12V, and 8V mean number of cylinders. What about 71 or 92, etc.?

  • @sokodad refers to cu. inch displacement of each cylinder.

  • @sokodad - Begins with number of cylinders. V indicates vertically opposed block (not all were, older ones were inlines) the 53, 71, or 92 indicates cubic inch displacement per cylinder. Example - A 653 is an inline 6, with 53 CID per cylinder = 318 CID. These were built in "V" blocks as well. An 8V71 is a V8 with 71 CID per cylinder = 568 CID. "T" or "TT" designation indicates single/twin turbochargers. "A" or "TA" designations, but I'm not sure what it means. All had blowers to force air in.

  • @Mysterio2276 TT means Talored torque or constant HP ...kind of a flat power curve and TA means turbo aftercooled

  • @copperheadmarine - thanks for the info... These engines were on their way out by my time :( I'd love to have one in my taxi cab :)

  • is that truck a little small, or that guy was big??!?!!

  • Sounds like 6v92 T/A in full R.P.M.!!!

  • Now would'nt you just love to roll into a "rich hoity-toity" neighbour hood about 2:30 AM, and just snap the jake!

  • @lugger2010 haha

  • cordless drill and a modified screwdriver essential piece of kit for playin with pumps

on a cummins away from the bosses gaze

  • Ohhhhhhhh jus' listen to her sing :"D

  • 17 people don't know what a real truck is, :p

  • Gorgeous truck AND a V-12 Detroit! What a combination!

  • man thats music to my ears, fuckin old school coooooooool!

  • Awesome detroit noise.

  • Sounds mean as hell

  • Yeah till a node in the computer breaks. TOO MODERN

  • @Teejoker1 Most modern automotive computers are very robust, rarely are they what breaks.

  • @ClassicTVMan81 one of the guys i work with he is older than dirt said at one time for one year kenworth would put a 16v92 in a stretched frame like for a tow rig he showed me a few pictures he took it was bad ass

  • Sounds like a symphony

  • that's the quietest 12V71N exhaust I ever heard

  • Fake

  • I have a signature 600 ..it don`t sound this good ,but the fuel mileage is where it counts .now if I could just get it to sound as good as this I would be very happy

  • Awesome truck!

  • Love the sound of those 12v71's when they rev. Nice looking truck btw

  • @johnfz1 but they dond have torque of an 4 stroke,so they are good only as a source of noise

  • @dieselroarmt875 They have lots of torque it is just alittle higher in Rpm. Take a two stroke motorcycle for a ride or three wheeler and tell me when it hits powerband it doesn't have torque. They are noisy but they love to run at fulol throttle all day.

  • gotta luv the sound of the detroit 2 strokes, i had an 8v92 myself ,mine ran out to 2400 rpm, but from the factory it was 2150 rpm, very different engine to 4 strokes , engine speed rises and falls very quick.

  • How is it on fuel

  • Very nice truck, I like it.

  • beautiful truck and killer 12v!!!

  • australian kenworths look old skol with them circle headlights....

  • Isn't revving up a cold engine a sin?

  • @1971SuperLead no you gotta warm it up.. can't let it idle on cold start.. especially a diesel

  • The trick to driving a Detroit is to slam your hand in the door. That way you drive really ticked off with your foot slammed to the floor.

  • This is a nice looking truck. I love the paintjob.

  • there is a guy over here with a 12v71 in a s model KW

  • nice a model k-whooper,with old school jimmy power.

  • nice old school a model with jimmy power

  • im a truck driver in autralia, id be interested to know would this old girl put out more "torque" then todays 15 litre cats n cummins etc?

or is it just "all horsepower"?? if someone knows n has time message me?

  • love it they had a few over here in australia back in the 80's very rare here i doubt i could find a factory one now still in one piece

  • I had a 12v71 2stroke in a T4W drilling rig as a deck engine. Is this the same type???

  • I worked at the Redford plant for 22 years in crank inspection. Thanks for the memories.

  • hey i agee with u on the cat im a true beliver of cats i drove a 1693 cat with a automatic and it would kick a cummis ass

350 to 400 and kta i love cats

  • well they never made a 379 with a V8 cat or a KTA engine but Ive out pulled 3408s with a jacked up NTC 400 cummins

  • no you havent quit lying.

  • Ive got witnesses to prove it.With that same 400 Cummins my brother got a speeding ticket coming over the top of Port Jarvis mountain on eastbound I -84 in NY.Grossing 83000 lbs.

  • A big cam cumapart is one of the worst motors ever made they have no balls a 1693 has so much power that when you pull a hill with one it will eat the rubber off the tires! Im sure some KTA can outpull 1693s but that the only time a cumapart will come close to the 1693.

  • how you get a big cam motor is the worst?

  • Because they blow up every 200 to 300 thousand. People always preach about how much cheaper it is to rebuild a cummins vs a cat the reason is you will have to rebuild a big 2 to 3 times before you come close to tearing into any 3400 model or any 1693.

  • my dad got the truck a mouth or to after it was new i dont kown when built it

  • that aint always true. its the kind of work you do and how its drivin and taken care of that determins how long a engine will stay togather

  • And with 2-stroke Detroits, you gotta drive 'em like your MAD at them. 2-stroke Detroits love revs from what many who've commented on other videos say. You gotta get MAD at the truck before you drive it.

  • you are right my dad and older bro drove my dads 88 379 with a big cam 4 400 cummins with a bit of pump work they out run 425s

  • well guess what with a little bit of pump work on a 3406b 425 kitty cat they will murder a a cripple 4 AKA 444 cummins the b model can easily make around 600 hp just on pump work.

  • i' didet say that it wood out run a turned up 425 oh and its a 400 not a 444

  • FYI a big cam 4 is a 444.

  • this motor is not a 444 it is a big cam 4 400 so hows it a 444 i'v heard of 444s this is not

  • Then its a BC I, II or III. A big cam 4 is a 444 this is common truck engine knowledge so it must be a i, II, or III.

  • this motor is a big cam 4 400 and 444 is not the only big cam 4 on truck paper there are 4 or 5 359s with big cam 4 400s and 350s

  • well there wrong.

  • well everybodys wrong but you im tellin you 444s are not the only big cam 4s

  • @green72chevypickup What engine are you talking about? If it's this truck, then it's a 12v71, V12, 2 stroke Detroit Diesel.

  • that does not sound right a 425 makein 600hp on pump work

  • Ya they will a cat fuel pump is an amazingly designed piece of machinery and you can do anything with them. When you get to 600hp you will have to keep an eye on the pyro.

  • to the cummins fan....please a 3408 0r a 1693 ta would easily walk away from any cummins including the kta series, i used to drive a very close friends custom 379 xl pete with a turned up 3408 he told me it was rated at over 600 bhp,he couldn't drive anymore due to diabetes ,there wasn't a truck i couldn't walk away from on the grape vine in calif.I used to hear cb chatter saying he must have propane injection, nope all motor, i did like the cummins 475 tt good motor

  • lol detroit diesls i recone they have them in tanks because there pretty much indestructable

  • damn i had my speakers up too far for this video XD. outstanding truck!

  • The old detroit's where virtually indestructible the would just keep on screaming the series 60 is a big pile of crap i think i have know more drivers have nothing but bad luck but i know one company that runs them and they get a million miles or more but im die hard caterpillar myself but the detroit ia big wimp when it has to pull a hill

  • Caterpillar is living on it laurels, the most powerful truck engine is a Cummins ISX 600 Signature. Caterpillar claims 500+ hp, ie the 550 Cat and 600 Cat. Put those engines on a dyno and watch them make 100 less hp than Cat claims. How do I know? Been there, done that. The C15 550 Cat was hard pressed to hit the 450 (real) hp mark on a stuska dyno. The Cummins engine is closer to 650 hp and the torque readings (2050) is also under rated. Cummins owns them all!!! LOL caterpillar, please!!!

  • Cummins is the POOR mans motor and they break way to easy!

  • interesting!! we have a great run with series 60's in New Zealand many clocking well over 1million Km .I had a 14ltr 530 hp 1850ftlb that out pulled many 620signitures and blew too C16 600's on a steep hill climb with an extra ton up! I must of had i out of the box ;-0

  • @xplorn Awesome. Do you have any vids of the Series 60 in New Zealand or UK?

  • @studpuppy69

No sorry never got the techno stuff to do vids and now i have a dirty ol C15 acert in a western star lol The cat is going pretty good though i must say

  • and u still run the risk of having a run away those engines are very temperamental u go to big on the injector or don't have it adjusted right with the bigger injectors and it will run away then u can plan on rebuilding the entire engine

  • you cant adjust the rack for more power have u ever tuned one up there a bitch and there as a spot on each adjuster u cant just turn them in more power

  • there was a rack stop that you could get that was under the valve cover. it was basically a bracket with a screw in it and you could adjust the screw to limmit the rack travel. Don't know if you had to custom order it or if it came standard on some aplications

  • you set the rack wide open and you can plan on your engine running away as soon as you start it

  • i want that motor in an REO !

  • you would have to replace your tranny and diff in 3 seconds

  • hey this truck sounds good and looks good nice ride but we all must it takes cubic inchs to make hp. 12v 71 71 x 12 852 cubic inches less than inline 855 cummins. these 2 strokes engines turn fuel into noise

  • Super.

852 cubic inches less than inline 855 cummins.......??

  • johnsenkenn............I think Super T was

just meaning that the 852 ci of a 12v71 is less than the 855ci of the older

NTC / NTA & N14 Cummins....by only 3ci.......which only works out to ,25 per cylinder.

  • That is what the math adds up to, and I can tell you from exp. - the 855 Cummins, ( also known as as the Cummins 350/400 Big Cam 3 and Big Cam 4 ) would out pull 12v71s unless the 12v71s had bigger injectors installed. The Cummins engines used WAY less lube oil, and lasted a lot longer as well... but they never came close to sounding as COOL as the Leaktroits...

  • In the end, i guess it depends on what you are used to driving.

  • i have never seen a detroit leak like you guys say they do.

  • But you're forgetting that the 2-stroke is producing twice the combustion cycles per rev that the Cummins 855 would be. The only drawback to the two-stroke Detroits (aside from their poor emissions performance) is that they derive less benefit from turbocharging than a 4-stroke engine does.

  • I agree Super, I drove the old 2 cycle detroits when I was first in my trucking career. They make lots of noise, very cool noise if you are into that, but they suck compared to modern engines..

  • I don't know MetalT, the newer Detroits, the series 60 in particular, seem to be gooe engines. The Series 60 is a good 4-stroke Detroit engine, and from what everyone tellsme, ot compares to the Cummins, and Cat.

  • Well, the Series 60, I have driven, they came out in 1987 as the first engine with electronic fuel control, Detroit called it DDEC. In 1987 they pulled a bit better than the Cummins 400 big cam IV , but not much. The 3406b 425 Cat was the king of the road at that time. Today, my fav motor above all is the Cummins ISX which goes from 450-600hp and has loads of torque. The Series 60 is in today's world in efficent, and behind the others in power. The new D-15 may be a good motor, no drive yet....

  • ahahahhhahahah the flat cam cummins?????

  • I know some Cummins engines that are the same way, like the old 903 v8 Cummins, with strait 6 inch stacks.

  • nice sound ...

  • torque would probably rip the truck in half lol. but i guess if you armour plated you rig with like 1" or 2" steel plating it would help even it out, but I guess even if you got the engine in there would be no room for a transmission =(

  • American engines are amoung the best in the world, but there is only one that is the best power to wieght ratio engine, and it happens to be the power house for the german MBT leiopard 2.

    MTU MB 873 Ka-501 turbo-charged multi-fuel V12 diesel engine that produces 1,500 PS 1,479 hp, 1,103 kW

this engine can chug anything from diesel to jet fuel.

    it can move 65 tons at 45 mp/h (72 km/h)

IF only i could cram this baby into a long nose 379xl OMG that would be sweet,

  • *hualling loads up hills*

  • I find it to be hilarious, that the EUROS will put diesel engines in there trucks over haul them and then when thier hauling loads up his thier tansmisions blow out LOLOL. cant tell you how many stories i hear of DAF trucks going out.

The EUROS do have a few good engines but untill they learn how to properly harnes that power witha good transmission you cant go over any where.

  • Awful sounding revvy diesel, most probably with little in the way of torque.

Euro diesels are the ones...Volvo FH 12/16 or Scania V8's or MAN 17L V10.

Will out power/out torque any of this US shit...

  • Dad knows an industrial C18 thats set at 780 horses.

  • the torque in this truck is enough to break your damn trucks in half

  • Well why don't you come over to the US, and give a truck with an American diesel engine, like the Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel 60 Series a try.

  • @greywolf45 its' a Detroit engine.... *smack*

  • @BassPlayer121692 I know it's a Detroit........"smack, smack"

  • @greywolf45 Or Duramax lol They are becoming the top of the line now!

  • @greywolf45 60 series suck dick. their too modern.

  • @Teejoker1 Not really, i used to drive a Freightliner Columbia with a 515hp Series 60, and they did just fine for me.

  • @Teejoker1 Thank the Gov't for that with all the emissions crap they have to put on motors today.

  • Comment removed

  • @Draxindustries1 The Detroit 71 series had a production run of 60 odd years-not bad for" US shit", as you refer to it. You should also compare like with like- the 12v71 was in it's hayday thirty years ago when we in Europe had nothing to touch it, also about the "revvy diesel"- Detroits of this type are two cycle engines and fire twice as often as four strokes, thus seeming to run faster. I've worked with engines of this type and if memory serves they top out at around 2100 rpm- hardly "revvy"!

  • @francovance1 I was beginning to think only the clueless were allowed to post...thanks for an informed point of view!

  • Rebuilding these are just gonna get more and more expensive. Parts are just gonna get harder to find

  • "v12 cat powered pete" will bring it up easier, never say never whb1965

  • Only way to drive a green grenade is, as your getting into the truck, scrape your shins on the steps, bend your fingernail on the door handle and bump your head on the door post, then you are in the right mood to drive one. (6v71 1970 Dodge 800, 13 direct, armstrong steering)

  • There´s only one way to run a Detroit, and it´s as if you´re mad at it because you´ve pinched your hand in the door. Full speed ahead, the harder you press them - the better they run .

  • just dont sit in cali and let it idle to warm up. get a few of them al gore tickets and you can start rebuilding the engine anyway. gotta love tree huggers, they show up to the protests in the suv. wheres your bicycle dude?

  • Revving any engine when cold should ideally be avoided. However the 2 stroke DD engines were also often used in (back-up) generator sets where they could be started and wound up to full load immediately without too much problem. Common saying was that you should shut the door on your hand so you're pissed off in such a manner that you'd rev the nuts off the engine - as though that is the prefered way to drive 'em.

  • Comment removed

  • thats right rev the hell out of it cold......sooner or later he'll have no engine

  • this is the shit

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • i work at a mack dealership and i see this shit every day lol hell most just floor the fuck out of it even before they get oil pressure. its retarded.

  • Comment removed

  • Agree, and I do warm up any engine (especially diesels) I operate to the correct or lowest acceptlable temp. before using. But the hind site is these diesels (any diesel rely) are built so well and tough that you could probably could rev them to the redline everytime you cold start them with no problems as long as their running correct already. I WOULDNT myself, because metal doesnt like to go from cold to hot quickly and its just uneeded stress on the engine.

  • I dont know if its a 2-stroke thing or not, I know a bunch of professonal loggers/timber cutters and they rev the crap out of their 2-stroke chainsaws right after starting. Their fuel is different, but same concept kind of. I would just warm up any engine before putting a load on it.

  • can anyone tell me why there wasn't a straight 6 series 92 engine made? And has there ever been a 12V92 shoved under the hood? There's been 12V71's but haven't seen a 12V92 under any hood yet

  • how much PS have this truck ? thank;s for replay

  • pferde stark right? probably make around 500 and about 1000-1200ft.lbs of torque

  • I worked for years as a Marine Diesel mechanic. See 12v71's all the time. They're one of the most common marine engines around.

  • I was lucky enough to be in the presence of a running 12v71TT (twin turbo) on Saturday!

  • Ist big truck I ever drove was a 84 cab over Pete with a 445 hp 8v92tta and a 15 speed. Very nice truck for a cab over, and that 2 stroke sound has never left my memory.

  • I saw the owner of Werner truckings' truck at The Iowa 80 truck show. 16v detroit with quad turbos. It was really cool

  • Great engine sound..

    Nice truck..

    A great paint job..

  • Nice. We had a Buzzen Dozen in an extended hood '49 Pete with a 5x4 and 4;44s. Was a stron runner, but did it ever like to be worked on. Sold in '85 for long hood W900 with a KT600. More toys... Merry Christmas.

  • Is that the same engine as the green goblin truck in Maximum Overdrive? They sound real close.

  • No that an 8V92 in Maximum Overdrive

  • Nice "Dirty Dozen".

  • 12V??? trae ese semajante motor de fabrica????

  • Detroit

  • nice my grandpa miller put a v12 92 in it that truck is fast i mean fast hahaha

  • I like the first 15sec.

  • Jesus how much horse does that thing have and isnt that a boat motor?

  • No, but I can see how you would get the two confused. They sound similar yes, but the differences are extreme. First off, this is a diesel, the boats are Gasoline. Second, this is a Detroit diesel, they have a very unique sound.

  • What are you talking about? Most boats/ships have diesel engines! Only small personal craft have stupid gassers 30' and below.

  • Ah, well, I seem to be misunderstood. When people say boat, I think small water craft with a small out board motor or a decent size engine which do not sound like a Detroit.

  • Okay gotta. I was thinking sizeable ships.

  • I'm Confused, No Huge Plume of Black Diesel Smoke?, But No Audible Blow Off IE no Throttle body, hmmm Diesel it is. Clean much ?

  • I hope he gave it time to warm up a little!

  • say what ever u want to about it it is bad

  • imagine the amount of petrol is used just in that video

  • nah they tend to be good on petrol, actually. Tend to drink some diesel though....:)

  • That is kind of what i was saying :D

  • I think i saw this truck at the ATHS truck show in Brooks, oregon.

  • Its not the size its the quality of the motor! a 426 will rape a 440 for instance a 1693 is probably to most underrated motor ever factory it had 425 HP probably really had 600 it was that much of a hoss ask anyone who had one. I just love all the clatering they make.

  • A 1693 Cat will eat a KTA for breakfast a 3408 will eat it for lunch and a 3412 will eat it for dinner!

  • need to check ur specs a little closer.. a 1693 will not run with a kt600 hense the horsepower.. a 3412 was never even used in a truck.. hmmmm?????

  • A turned up 1693 will out pull anything... Theres a Pete on here with a 3412 in it.

  • type in "3412"and there you'll see a pete with a 3412 in it and pulling an oversize load

  • A c16 would outpull a KT stock hate to say. 1600-1700 ft lbs torque vs 2000.

  • So would it be fair to say my VOLVO with 2250 ft lbs torque will outpull a c16 with 2050 ? hmmmm would love to go up against one with same weight and see. one of these days....

  • No i'm talking about a C18, not a C16. C18 with 780 horses not 550 or 625.

  • hmmmm ??? did you read your own post? are you sure WHAT you are talking about cause that is not what you wrote ? ANYWHO... the whole torque/HP thing is a bit confusing. A 1693 CAT 425 HP is suppose to be bad ass but the torque of these older engines less than 1600 lb/ft so my 625 2250 should walk all over one, but although iam impressed with my 625 i would expect MORE out of the old 1693 425.. the #s don't always seem to add up.

  • I can tell you for a FACT 3412's were in used in on-road trucks.. One was a MACK in Hazard, KY and had four exhaust pipes..
