Hi , i'm eager to start in photography. For the time being I'm using my Nokia N8 with 12 MP , but it doesn't seem to fit all cases. I want to ask you what would be the ideal DSLR camera for someone starting out as a photographer ?
@GayanPethiyagoda Depends on your budget, but in terms of entry-level SLRs, my current favourites are the Nikon D3100 and Pentax K-r. The Pentax is a bargain at the moment - a mid-range SLR at an entry-level price. Superb image quality, fast performance, great controls. Only downside is that there aren't the same number of lenses are there are for Nikon and Canon SLRs, particularly low cost ones. If that puts you off, go for the Nikon D3100.
@galaxyships I just got mine 2 days ago, and am really enjoying it! I was doing tons of research, and comparing lots and lots of homemade videos here between the SX40HS, and it's two main competitors, the Panasonic FZ150 and the Sony HX1000V, and came to the conclusion that they were equal with regards to sharpness, and also the Canon photo quality was the same, if not better than the other two. Some people prefer the other two because apparently you have more manual options and the RAW mode.
@RAWRnomnomIMMYDEE95 Depends on your priorities - Canon has slightly better image quality but Panasonic is much faster. Personally, I'd go for the Panasonic.
@RAWRnomnomIMMYDEE95 Yes, it works really well on Auto mode so you don't need to be a photography expert to use it. Having said that, if you just want a point and shoot camera there's no need to spend this much and get something this bulky - you might be better off with something like the Canon Ixus 230 HS (see the review on my channel). But if you want to get into photography as a creative hobby, the SX40 HS is a great choice.
Hey, could you e-mail or contact the Canon company for me? There is a flaw in the camera that is a deal breaker to some people. In manual mode, if you have an exposure of more than 1 sec., it automatically sets the iso at 100, limiting nigh-time shots. This problem could be fixed with a FIRMWARE UPDATE. Could you please e-mail canon about this, because it would make this camera that much more wonderful. Please do it, for i really want to see this camera be the best camera out there.
@LazerLord10 In program mode the camera should allow for higher iso exposures @ 1 second. However I highly recommend that you try CHDK (Canon Hacked Development Kit). It will allow you to change every parameter you could imagine (and even those you cant!) and adds several interesting functions. It is free to download and its absolutely 100% safe as it does NOT flash the firmware. FYI my SX230HS also fixes the ISO to 100 in manual when selecting a shutter speed starting at 1s.regards
@DeathlyHall0w Could you send me the exat link. And what do you mean by "flash the firmware"? Does it mean that the firmware on the camera will still be accessible?
Hi, I really would like to own this camera, and have used a PowerShot in my earlier photography hobby, but I have some BIG questions. Is there a lens cap for this camera that is included? When shooting video, does the camera zoom digitally or optically? And also, I've read on dpreview that this camera has a massive 240 fps video at low quality. Is this true?
@LazerLord10 Yes cap: yes. Zoom during video is optical. Normal videos are at 1080p (ie 1920x1080) at 24fps, but there's an alternative mode that captures at 640x480 and 120fps, and another at 320x240 and 240fps. These play back at 30fps for 1/4- and 1/8-speed slow motion but the resolution is much lower than the 1080p videos.
I have a question- I just got Is it possible in video mode to set it to like a macro focus setting so that it will focus on small objects while recording and if it is, how do you do it?
@fabulust09 Yes, there are options to take photos at 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Videos are widescreen unless you choose the basic VGA (640x480) option.
Hello, I'm pretty new to this camera and cameras overall, but we're filming alot. I was wondering if you can put a microphone on the SX40 since there is no external mic output? Grateful for answer!
@Pulkadrage No, the SX40 HS doesn't accept an external mic. The Panasonsic FZ150 does though - see my review on my channel. It's an unusual connection (2.5mm) but you can get an adapter to connect a 3.5mm plug. Or just record audio onto a dedicated audio recorder. It's more of a hassle, especially when you come to edit, but it's useful to be able to monitor the audio on headphones - something no digital camera can do.
@Pulkadrage It's just a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter - make sure it's the right way around though... you need a 2.5mm plug and a 3.5mm socket. Some are just a solid adapter widget and some are a cable with a plug and socket on either end - the cable type is better because it puts less strain on the camera's microphone socket.
Sx40is dosnt offer raw,it has a loud zoom noise ,images look great ,stereo mic are position on front thus causing a near half ear close effect while the fz150 offers stereo mica dynamically on top ,fz150 offers raw,fz150 offers fast zoom speeds while filming ,and has a 3200 iso option and looks pretty good ,especially when you edit in raw mode.
I have two cameras in mind, one is the Sony HX100V & this SX40 HS... Which one would you recommend? Im in a real dilemma here & cannot make up my mind... Brand & quality wise canon is far ahead but the HX100V has some good features like Sweep Panorama, Back Ground Defocusing, Manual Focus etc etc but i am worried because sony even though they have a good reputation I kinda doubt their cameras & I don't notice any feature junkie using a sony! Its either a Nikon or Canon.... Pls help me out..
@atq42 Sony makes some great cameras (particularly the NEX range), but between these two models, the SX40 HS wins it with its superior image quality. The HX100V does have some great features but its sensor is noisier and its colour processing isn't as flattering.
Hi I'm looking for a camera that have high quality with both video and picture..which one is better Canon PowerShot SX40 HS or Canon PowerShot SX130 which one do you recommend? or other good camera as well please answer and thanks! :)
@babythuyngoc The SX130 IS is a solid low-cost option, but the SX40 HS is much better for image quality, has a bigger zoom - is generally a better camera. If you want something more compact but still with a big zoom, I'd recommend the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS or Fujifilm F600EXR.
I'm trying to find myself a good digital camera because I can't afford a DSLR. So far, I'm debating between Canon SX40, CanonSX30, or Panasonic FZ150, I've also heard some good reviews for a Coolpix P500. I'm planning on using the camera for whale watching/nature stuff. So I will need something that can take pictures quickly and in good detail (both video and picture). What are your suggestions? Because I really want to make sure I'm getting a good camera for the money.
@Twolf1613 I'd avoid the sx30 but otherwise that's a good short list, especially for nature photography. As that's a priority, I'd recommend the FZ150 as it's so much faster than the others - gives you 4 or 5 shots to choose from whereas the others would only take one or two.
Would you recommend this camera to a total newbie (seriously, I'm a fifteen year old who has grown out of her poor quality Nikon Coolpix L24)? Or if so, which ones would you recommend? And cheaper, if possible, like $400 Max. ? THANKS SO MUCH. I'd love you forever if you'd respond.
@emmaisorganized Like pretty much any decent camera, it's very easy to use if you leave it on Auto mode. Only thing to consider is whether you want a massive zoom, and the bulky camera design that comes with it. Otherwise, I'd consider the Canon SX230 (big-ish zoom in small body) or Canon S95 (best for image quality; just about to be replaced by the S100 but price has come down as a result). [I don't always recommend Canons but they've done really well this year]
@KyleCrafty The Canon ELPH 310 HS is great for video (and photos) - only costs $200 at Amazon. Check out my review via my youtube channel or at shortsharpreviews-dot-com. If its 10-minute clip length limit is too short, I'd recommend a Sony or Panasonic that supports AVCHD - perhaps the Panasonic FZ47 or ZS10, or Sony HX9.
@shortsharpreviews Just for your incredible assistance and one on one interatcion, I suddenly feel the need to subscribe to you. I'll do just that... darn you..
@shortsharpreviews I certainly will! Now, can you tell me why when my knee hit my desk really hard just now the inside of my right ear began to throb?
@shortsharpreviews You seem to really know your stuff. Upon wacthing the ELPH 310 HS video I grew attracted to the Canon 230 HS. You mentioned that it limits at 10 minutes of video which is absolutely fine seeing as I don't even expect my videos to be that long. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this very direct to the point review. I'm actually confused what to buy between Lumix FZ150 and this camera. I'm really after image quality and don't bother about videos. How's the manual features of it compared to panasonic lumix FZ150?
@BigBangfanable OK, taking video out of the equation... the Canon is a little better than the Panasonic, especially in low light. The Panasonic is much faster. So if you tend to take a lot of photos indoors, go for the Canon. If you often photograph fast-moving subjects (animals, children etc), or if you like to take a lot of photos quickly, then go for the Panasonic. There's nothing much to choose between them for manual controls - both are pretty good in that respect.
I just purchased this and it's THE BEST. I'm no photography or techie expert but I need no effort to take ridiculously almost-flawless photos. I love it.
well im a bit confuse between this camera, nikon p500, and sony hx100v.... while nikon is cheaper... sony offers cool features like 3d imaging... can u suggest me one. my main concern is image quality with best image stabalisation... and ease to use...
@iappurv For image quality, the SX40 HS comes top. The HX100V does have some great features but its sensor is noisier and its colour processing isn't as flattering. The Nikon P500 is a little better than the Sony for image quality and is a great camera, but at that price I'd recommend the Panasonic FZ48. See my (written) reviews of all these cameras at expertreviews.co.uk/ultrazoom-cameras
i just wanna know , i want to buy this camera but what good more to video , the sx30is onw or this (sx40hs) ? cuz the megapixels of this camera is 12 and the 30 one is 14 ! so i dont know .. please answer me =)
@XPmichaliXP the SX40 HS is much better than the SX30 IS. The truth is, when you've got a sensor the size of your little finger nail, packing more and more pixels in actually starts to reduce image quality - the pixels become so tiny that the picture becomes really noisy. That's why lots of manufacturers are dropping from 14MP to 12MP this year. (SLRs have more megapixels but their sensors are ten times the size.)
@XPmichaliXP Autofocus speed is about the same, as far as I remember. The SX40 HS is faster in continuous mode. If you want speed, consider the Panasonic FZ150 (see the review on my YouTube channel).
@mohammadzafar It's 600g including its battery - that's a little heavier than other ultra-zoom cameras (the Panasonic FZ150 is 528g) but a little lighter than entry level SLRs (Canon 1100D/T3 is 695g with its kit lens). If you want something much lighter, consider the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS - very similar quality/performance to the SX40 HS but only has a 14x zoom... but also fits in pockets and weighs 230g.
@shortsharpreviews - How about the Canon SX30 IS, i know that's not any lighter but is there a difference between that and sx40, because im getting sx30 IS 40-50 dollars cheaper online....
@shortsharpreviews Thanks for the quick response. I was looking more into decent video cameras later today. I came across the Panasonic Lumix GH2 and G3. I'm pretty sure that the GH2 has better quality as well as more features, but I might be able to get the G3 for much cheaper than both the GH2 and the FZ150. What would you suggest?
@ThreeGuysTechReviews Lumix G cameras are superb for video - even better than the FZ150. One drawback is that only the GH2 has manual control over video exposures. Not so important for casual use but for creative projects the G3 might be frustrating. Also worth considering the Nikon J1 - I'm hoping to review this here soon.
@CarlitxTricks92 I haven't tested the S100 yet but I'd anticipate that it's even better than the SX40 for image quality, thanks to its larger sensor size and brighter lens. It's also much slimmer, but it's 5x zoom lens isn't a patch on the SX40 HS's 35x zoom. Go for the S100 if you need something highly portable and take a lot of photos in low light. Go for the SX40 HS if you like to zoom in on faraway subjects.
@shortsharpreviews Thanks you got me a great question ... I did not expect a compact has as much power. One last question.... the s100 or to record FZ150 ??? and heard that the FZ150 records 1080 to 50fps these videos do not weigh a lot?
@CarlitxTricks92 The FZ150 is great for video. Yes, the 50fps mode needs a fast computer to play them back, but you can also shoot at 25fps (it's actually 50fps interlaced, but the result is the same - easier for computers to play/edit)
RumorPanasonic alert!!: There will be a firmware update later on that removes more noise by 20% expect it sooner this year ;) Camerlabs editor Gordon Laigne already has it on his page, check out the difference ;)
@Surfakingdom Ultra-zooms and SLRs are very different kinds of camera. The SX40 HS takes great pictures compared to any other ultra-zoom but image quality isn't a patch on the t3i and most other SLRs, especially in low light. The t3i is generally much faster too, although only if you use its viewfinder - it focuses really slowly when using the screen to compose shots. The main advantage of the SX40 HS is its enormous zoom - great for wildlife, sports and macro photography.
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls See my response to Blargh665... I don't have the camera in front of me, but if memory serves, it's on the mode dial on top of the camera - the icon of a running man, just below AUTO. It's in a different place to the other burst mode options as this mode isn't available at the same time as manual exposure control etc.
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls@Blargh665 Sorry, I was wrong and Fatherof5ive is right... it's not the running man icon. You need to select SCN on the dial on the top oft the camera and then press FUNC. SET and select High-speed Burst HQ from the scene preset options.
I bought this last week and I can't get a focus lock when I'm shooting the sky can any one tell me why is that I don't know if my camera has some issues
@loganlakmal Might be just because there's not enough sharp detail in the sky for the camera to focus on. Most cameras get confused when pointed at the sky/clouds. Best thing to do is set the camera to manual focus and then adjust it to infinity focus.
@Maio0oia Yes it's a much better camera than the SX30 for image and photo quality. It tends to be a bit more expensive because it's newer - I'll leave you to check local prices - but it's definitely worth the extra. The zoom motor is picked up by the microphone in videos but it's pretty subtle. It can't take photos while recording videos. For this feature and silent zooming, go for the Panasonic FZ150.
@weezyed The E-PL3 and E-P3 are very different to the SX40 HS. They have much bigger sensors, which gives better image quality, especially in low light. Their kit lens has a much smaller zoom - 3x compared to 35x - but detachable lenses mean you can upgrade them. However, you could pay $1000s on lenses and still not match the SX40 HS's 35x zoom range and macro facility. So it's Olympus for better quality or Canon for more versatility.
@Blargh665 I don't have the camera in front of me, but if memory serves, it's on the mode dial on top of the camera - the icon of a running man, just below AUTO. It's in a different place to the other burst mode options as this mode isn't available at the same time as manual exposure control etc.
Hello shortsharpreviews, I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and I can't seem to find the burst setting that you talked about where it took 8 photos.
So the FZ150 has a much faster autofocus system? If so I think I will pick that over the longer zoom of the Canon. 600mm is already more than enough for my current needs, since I'm alredy used to shooting with 200mm on a DLSR :D
@Mtcrazyguitar It's a great choice if you're interested in telephoto photography (ie wildlife, sports) or macro (insects etc), and image quality is great for this type of camera. If you're more interested in photographing people, landscapes etc, I'd recommend an SLR - image quality and performance are in a different league, and controls tend to be better too. My SLR reviews to follow shortly, but at this price I'd recommend Nikon D3100 or Pentax K-r.
@JulieRitchie97 Yes, both. There's a built in pop-up flash, and also an accessory hotshoe (underneath a plastic cover) for a Canon Speedlite (or similar) external flashgun.
@dummerbube That's a good point. The T3 / 1100D is in a different league for image quality, particularly in low light. (See my Panasonic FZ150 review which compares image quality to the Canon EOS 600D.) However, you'd have to spend a fortune on lenses to get the same 24-840mm focal length range and macro facility with an SLR. The SX40 HS is much more affordable and compact given the flexibility of its lens.
Really crisp and sharp review, thanks for demonstrating the burst modes, never found anyone doing that.Others just go on delivering long speeches sidelining the camera itself which is the focus of the video.Compliments!!
3 Sec. between shots is very slow.

The Powershot is the best camera out there except for ISO it's missing 50 and 80
Deep color photo's also 60 frames 720P Video and 1080P 60 frames.
It's missing slow motion video recording.
It's missing the new 45x Optical Zoom and 240 Digital add zoom with hgih rez chip.
Wireless picture tranfer (Internal in the camera)
Auto clsoing lens
Once they have this it will be complete.

What would you suggest for recording youtube vlogs under $300?
KyleCrafty 3 months ago
@KyleCrafty The Canon ELPH 310 HS is great for video (and photos) - only costs $200 at Amazon. Check out my review via my youtube channel or at shortsharpreviews-dot-com. If its 10-minute clip length limit is too short, I'd recommend a Sony or Panasonic that supports AVCHD - perhaps the Panasonic FZ47 or ZS10, or Sony HX9.

@shortsharpreviews Just for your incredible assistance and one on one interatcion, I suddenly feel the need to subscribe to you. I'll do just that... darn you..

@KyleCrafty Thanks. If anyone needs camera buying advice you know where to send them.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews I certainly will! Now, can you tell me why when my knee hit my desk really hard just now the inside of my right ear began to throb?
KyleCrafty 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews You seem to really know your stuff. Upon wacthing the ELPH 310 HS video I grew attracted to the Canon 230 HS. You mentioned that it limits at 10 minutes of video which is absolutely fine seeing as I don't even expect my videos to be that long. Thank you!
KyleCrafty 3 months ago
Thank you so much for this very direct to the point review. I'm actually confused what to buy between Lumix FZ150 and this camera. I'm really after image quality and don't bother about videos. How's the manual features of it compared to panasonic lumix FZ150?
BigBangfanable 3 months ago
@BigBangfanable OK, taking video out of the equation... the Canon is a little better than the Panasonic, especially in low light. The Panasonic is much faster. So if you tend to take a lot of photos indoors, go for the Canon. If you often photograph fast-moving subjects (animals, children etc), or if you like to take a lot of photos quickly, then go for the Panasonic. There's nothing much to choose between them for manual controls - both are pretty good in that respect.

hi.. nice review...!
well im a bit confuse between this camera, nikon p500, and sony hx100v.... while nikon is cheaper... sony offers cool features like 3d imaging... can u suggest me one. my main concern is image quality with best image stabalisation... and ease to use...
thanks..
iappurv 3 months ago
@iappurv For image quality, the SX40 HS comes top. The HX100V does have some great features but its sensor is noisier and its colour processing isn't as flattering. The Nikon P500 is a little better than the Sony for image quality and is a great camera, but at that price I'd recommend the Panasonic FZ48. See my (written) reviews of all these cameras at expertreviews.co.uk/ultrazoom-cameras

There are lenses for this camera? i mean like fisheye and that
pablosanroman0 3 months ago
@pablosanroman0 No, it has a non-removable lens. If you want to use different lenses you'll need an SLR or mirrorless system camera.

hey ! Awesome review !
i just wanna know , i want to buy this camera but what good more to video , the sx30is onw or this (sx40hs) ? cuz the megapixels of this camera is 12 and the 30 one is 14 ! so i dont know .. please answer me =)
XPmichaliXP 3 months ago
@XPmichaliXP the SX40 HS is much better than the SX30 IS. The truth is, when you've got a sensor the size of your little finger nail, packing more and more pixels in actually starts to reduce image quality - the pixels become so tiny that the picture becomes really noisy. That's why lots of manufacturers are dropping from 14MP to 12MP this year. (SLRs have more megapixels but their sensors are ten times the size.)
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews okay thank you so much :]
and the focus in this camera more good and speed than the 30 one ? :)
XPmichaliXP 3 months ago
@XPmichaliXP Autofocus speed is about the same, as far as I remember. The SX40 HS is faster in continuous mode. If you want speed, consider the Panasonic FZ150 (see the review on my YouTube channel).

@shortsharpreviews okay ! thank you that helped alot ! :]

What camera was this video filmed with?
KenerdG13 3 months ago
@KenerdG13 It's a Panasonic GH1
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
is this camera heavy to carry around? Would appreciate a reply from someone who has it.
mohammadzafar 3 months ago
@mohammadzafar It's 600g including its battery - that's a little heavier than other ultra-zoom cameras (the Panasonic FZ150 is 528g) but a little lighter than entry level SLRs (Canon 1100D/T3 is 695g with its kit lens). If you want something much lighter, consider the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS - very similar quality/performance to the SX40 HS but only has a 14x zoom... but also fits in pockets and weighs 230g.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews - How about the Canon SX30 IS, i know that's not any lighter but is there a difference between that and sx40, because im getting sx30 IS 40-50 dollars cheaper online....
mohammadzafar 3 months ago
@mohammadzafar The SX40 HS is a massive improvement over the SX30 IS for image quality. Best to avoid the SX30 IS.

@shortsharpreviews - thank you for your help :)

THIS OR THE FZ150? For YouTube videos mainly.
ThreeGuysTechReviews 3 months ago
@ThreeGuysTechReviews I'd recommend the FZ150 if videos are a priority. Longer clip lengths, quieter zoom, manual exposure for videos.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews Thanks for the quick response. I was looking more into decent video cameras later today. I came across the Panasonic Lumix GH2 and G3. I'm pretty sure that the GH2 has better quality as well as more features, but I might be able to get the G3 for much cheaper than both the GH2 and the FZ150. What would you suggest?
ThreeGuysTechReviews 3 months ago
@ThreeGuysTechReviews Lumix G cameras are superb for video - even better than the FZ150. One drawback is that only the GH2 has manual control over video exposures. Not so important for casual use but for creative projects the G3 might be frustrating. Also worth considering the Nikon J1 - I'm hoping to review this here soon.

which is better for record?
this camera or canon s100?
CarlitxTricks92 3 months ago
@CarlitxTricks92 I haven't tested the S100 yet but I'd anticipate that it's even better than the SX40 for image quality, thanks to its larger sensor size and brighter lens. It's also much slimmer, but it's 5x zoom lens isn't a patch on the SX40 HS's 35x zoom. Go for the S100 if you need something highly portable and take a lot of photos in low light. Go for the SX40 HS if you like to zoom in on faraway subjects.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@shortsharpreviews Thanks you got me a great question ... I did not expect a compact has as much power. One last question.... the s100 or to record FZ150 ??? and heard that the FZ150 records 1080 to 50fps these videos do not weigh a lot?
CarlitxTricks92 3 months ago
@CarlitxTricks92 The FZ150 is great for video. Yes, the 50fps mode needs a fast computer to play them back, but you can also shoot at 25fps (it's actually 50fps interlaced, but the result is the same - easier for computers to play/edit)
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
RumorPanasonic alert!!: There will be a firmware update later on that removes more noise by 20% expect it sooner this year ;) Camerlabs editor Gordon Laigne already has it on his page, check out the difference ;)
vwlover94 3 months ago
This looks just as good as a rebel t3i WTF?!!!! IM confused. Should i get this instead???????
Surfakingdom 3 months ago
@Surfakingdom Ultra-zooms and SLRs are very different kinds of camera. The SX40 HS takes great pictures compared to any other ultra-zoom but image quality isn't a patch on the t3i and most other SLRs, especially in low light. The t3i is generally much faster too, although only if you use its viewfinder - it focuses really slowly when using the screen to compose shots. The main advantage of the SX40 HS is its enormous zoom - great for wildlife, sports and macro photography.

CuteFunnyMusicGirls 3 months ago
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls See my response to Blargh665... I don't have the camera in front of me, but if memory serves, it's on the mode dial on top of the camera - the icon of a running man, just below AUTO. It's in a different place to the other burst mode options as this mode isn't available at the same time as manual exposure control etc.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls @Blargh665 Sorry, I was wrong and Fatherof5ive is right... it's not the running man icon. You need to select SCN on the dial on the top oft the camera and then press FUNC. SET and select High-speed Burst HQ from the scene preset options.
shortsharpreviews 3 months ago
@CuteFunnyMusicGirls It's found under the "SCN" dial along with portrait, night, etc.

I bought this last week and I can't get a focus lock when I'm shooting the sky can any one tell me why is that I don't know if my camera has some issues
loganlakmal 3 months ago
@loganlakmal Might be just because there's not enough sharp detail in the sky for the camera to focus on. Most cameras get confused when pointed at the sky/clouds. Best thing to do is set the camera to manual focus and then adjust it to infinity focus.

@MaioOoia SX30 is same price.

i was planning to buy the sx30 but i think this one is better ....I have 4 Qs:
1-how much is it more expensive than the sx30?
2-does it make noise while zooming?
3-can I capture while recording a video?
4-what are the differences between the two?
thaaaaaaaanks for the amazing review =)
Maio0oia 4 months ago
@Maio0oia Yes it's a much better camera than the SX30 for image and photo quality. It tends to be a bit more expensive because it's newer - I'll leave you to check local prices - but it's definitely worth the extra. The zoom motor is picked up by the microphone in videos but it's pretty subtle. It can't take photos while recording videos. For this feature and silent zooming, go for the Panasonic FZ150.

is this camera better than the OLYMPUS E-PL3 or E-P3? please be honest
weezyed 4 months ago
@weezyed The E-PL3 and E-P3 are very different to the SX40 HS. They have much bigger sensors, which gives better image quality, especially in low light. Their kit lens has a much smaller zoom - 3x compared to 35x - but detachable lenses mean you can upgrade them. However, you could pay $1000s on lenses and still not match the SX40 HS's 35x zoom range and macro facility. So it's Olympus for better quality or Canon for more versatility.

Hello shortsharpreviews, I bought this camera a couple of weeks ago and I can't seem to find the burst setting that you talked about where it took 8 photos.
Your help would be appreciated:)
Blargh665 4 months ago
So the FZ150 has a much faster autofocus system? If so I think I will pick that over the longer zoom of the Canon. 600mm is already more than enough for my current needs, since I'm alredy used to shooting with 200mm on a DLSR :D
diablolrm90 4 months ago
@Mtcrazyguitar It's a great choice if you're interested in telephoto photography (ie wildlife, sports) or macro (insects etc), and image quality is great for this type of camera. If you're more interested in photographing people, landscapes etc, I'd recommend an SLR - image quality and performance are in a different league, and controls tend to be better too. My SLR reviews to follow shortly, but at this price I'd recommend Nikon D3100 or Pentax K-r.
shortsharpreviews 4 months ago
Would you recommend this to amateur photographers who want to get more into photography? And is the image quality nice?
Thx

@JulieRitchie97 Yes, both. There's a built in pop-up flash, and also an accessory hotshoe (underneath a plastic cover) for a Canon Speedlite (or similar) external flashgun.
shortsharpreviews 4 months ago
does this camera come with a flash or is it avalible to buy?
JulieRitchie97 4 months ago
@dummerbube That's a good point. The T3 / 1100D is in a different league for image quality, particularly in low light. (See my Panasonic FZ150 review which compares image quality to the Canon EOS 600D.) However, you'd have to spend a fortune on lenses to get the same 24-840mm focal length range and macro facility with an SLR. The SX40 HS is much more affordable and compact given the flexibility of its lens.
shortsharpreviews 4 months ago
@RJL17 Canon quotes it as 380 shots based on CIPA testing standard - that's about average for an ultra-zoom bridge camera
shortsharpreviews 4 months ago
How about the battery life?
RJL17 4 months ago
Why get this one over the T3 (1100D) which is about the same price but better regarding its features?
