Jimmy always plays it in the 1st position so he can make use of the open strings when possible, which adds emphasis & sustain to the each note. He also plays it in the 1st position because it flows into the sets up the guitar solo which is in the 2nd position.
If you're not ready to learn the riff the right way, learn other riffs you CAN handle at your skill level. If you fudge on this, and continue to play for a long time, you'll eventually wish you had learned these monster riffs the right way, the first time... that is unless you'll ENJOY torturing yourself with a bunch of RELEARNING later on.
@mknomad5 it's just a lesson for beginners. they'll be happy if they manage to sound like him, they don't want to completely become him from the start. So no need for the whole 'epic fail' thing.

Seems like a good beginners lesson to me and it sounds correct for the studio version though Jimmy usually played it differently live..
