It supposed to be super bright as African music usually is. Sounds great! My director wants us to sing it this way (bright and loud), but we are doing the percussion much different and a little slower which i like more.
But this is wonderful!! the yelling is great too!!
i think this sounds good, i especially like this with an satb choir, it gives it more dimension, in my opinion, than an ssa choir which is what we have at my school since its all girls.when we sang this song we only had a few differences: 'awa yi ori' we pronounced 'awa ya war i' and we dropped some consonants in other words as well. i mean its not like you have a yoruba dialect coach, right? of course it wont be perfect.
Well I sing the song for a college and like they told us. If you singing a song in someone elses language its disrespectful to do it wrong. If you were to sing it like this in the native homeland they would really be upset.
This was a very good piece, they where very good, so everyone who needs to point out things they think is wrong just keep it to yourselfs so we can enjoy something very beautiful.
I would like to point out that this is an African piece. An african piece with African vowels. Of course theyre not going to sing this song the same way you sing a requiem or madrigal. And there is a lot of percussion, but consider where the video is being shot---right on the perucssion side. Ever think that maybe this might have sounded better live, like most things do?
All you junior high and college freshmen "experts" need to shut up and sit down. So what if you all are doing this song too? One performance doesn't make you PhDs in music. This is a fine performance. It's the recording that's a little off. Anything recorded outside of a sound studio is not going to sound like the original. And there's no such thing as too much percussion! As for SalamaiSnit, well, your name says it all. Clueless, ain't ya?
I'm going to have to agree this is pretty bad. Regardless of "your rank" this piece was just sloppy. african vowels are different so I'm not getting on that but where is the balance? you can barely hear the guys the whole song and what the HELL was the director thinking around 4 minutes. I don't think I could get out of a show fast enough if the people who were supposed to be entertaining me were just screaming obnoxiously.
@toungetied98 wow. really. this video was obviously not shot will the proper equiptment.
I'd like to see you do better because i have seen this choir many times and they are always breathtaking... sooo i bet if you ever preformed.. i would not enjoy it but i would be respectful and atleast try to sit through it
@lawyer2b94 My choir sang this, and much better in MY opinion. I just didn't like the way the director chose to have it performed. That has nothing to do with equipment. If i was actually there I wouldn't run out, it was a joke but I would definitely not be enjoying this song. I'm sure the choir is very good but the way they were instructed to perform this song was just annoying.
You know, you guys are right. The vowels are bright. Which is a bad things, until you find out the fact that that was the intention. As was, ironically enough, everything you guys were knocking them on.
Many African songs are supposed to be sung in a very nasaly manner. It's usually unpleasant to our "western tradition" ears, but that is how they do it. The African students that I have had have all sung with the same tone quality, and it was difficult establishing a blend within the ensemble.

who the hell is that black as nigger interuptting with her african shit? bitch this ain't uganda, shut the hell up. go roam with your antelope and shit
wow...not the best choice of song for this chours....it was good...but they butchered the vowels BIG TIME...it was good....i mean it was happy....i guess....
I am a part of this choir. now that i am at a place of higher education and look back, we didnt do too damn bad. in africa, the vowels are a lot brighter. what is the most amusing, is the comment stating the vocal track needs to be elongated. WELL, if one would take an anatomy of the voice class, they would know that bringing the larynx higher, widening the sound into a smile and opening the soft palate will make the required bright tone do some research... including the ranking of WHS choirs.
that sounded like a bunch of 7th graders got together and sang that.
sorry that was so harsh, but i don't lie.
you sound like your are singing with smiles on your face. that doesn't let alot of air escape you mouth and it gives it kidof a nasely sound. try using you diaphram and opening your mouth more vertical.
and not so much percussion next time.
our accapella choir is working on this piece right now and i'm just giving some helpful hints for next time.
deeper and had more color...but right no it just sounds weird...but it sounds like one section is the only section being very country I think it is the 1st sopranoes?
you do have to consider, that may be the way that the africans sing it...that's not how our choir sang it, but some languages have super bright vowels. it doesn't appeal to american tastes, but that may just be the way it actually is supposed to sound.
hey, can u do me a favor and shut up. the percussionist had very little time to learn their parts and it was just the begining of freshman year so yea.
How about you shut up? The percussion IS much too loud. And these guys murdered the song. Even when my group sang it, it sounded bad. White people like us can't sing African songs correctly, no matter how hard they try. It just sounds better with ACTUAL Africans. The part at 4:10 sounded like a playground.
someone in the alto section sounds like there singing out of there nose, and you cant hear the guys..... its odd, but other wise its alright, too much tamberina and such quite annoying actually... and why is there two directors? student director or something?
