... sorry... typing with my thumbs... You probably could not move him with a forklift. The leaning forward relates to the application... front grappling, for example. You see front leaning shiko dachi in other Okinawan forms, e.g. Seipai, for ground attack. The later Japanese versions have made the stances more symmetrical in part for the beauty of the movement. Being beautifully vertical is no more balanced, especially if grabbed from behind, which does in fact occur in Seienchin.
Ok! Sorry ... I think I was wrong ... sorry for my hasty comment. Yes is Goju, I've only seen the beginning of the kata and I have not finished viewing. Sorry
Ignorance is a sad illness, and there is plenty of those in youtube... Ladies and gentlemen, please research who the performer is before judging without knowing... In America the forms severely distorted by the many factors to include poor lineage and half learned and threfore wrongfully thought technics lthat ead to the development of poor critics called experts... Mr. Yagi is the son of Meitoku Yagi, direct lineage and inheritor of the Goju Tradition from Miyagi Chojun O'Sensei. Not Shito...
Please lets show some RESPECT for the difference. NOt all Goju schools perform the kata the same way, we all do it the way we are shown by our senseis, no right of wrong just different!
@Gadayif yeah there is morio higonna's goju ryu and meibukan goju ryu. I think higonna calls it goju kai. Its really hard to find these kata's online especially since dearly departed sensei miyagi left us and meibukan goju ryu is different from all the others. I keep trying to find seiryu (blue dragon) so I can learn it, but I can't find it.
Also, your comments on Goju practitioners' short lifespans is a bit convoluted. Though there may be a link to health problems and improper training of sanchin, there is no diffinitive proof (as of yet) to such claims. But most well trained practitioners will concede that sanchin trained improperly over a lengthy period can cause ill effects on the body.
A more reasonable explanation of shorter life spans (amoung all styles) is alcoholism. Many practitioners have been lost to it
Jim, Evenn after that many died before old age. when take Okinawans 70's is not an age to die. I know u r a Guju karateka. with respect.. Gambatte Kudasai
He's not very old. In Okinawa, most of teachers who are in 80's can do kata better than him. sadly, most Goju teachers die before 80's. But, if u see kata of Koshin Iha, Wakugawa, Hichiya, and many Okinawa teachers you will know what I'm talking abt. I respect and I have met Yagi Sensei. But, what I told is truth
For me his stances are week. Same thing can be seen from his father, week unbalanced stances and lean forward in Shiko.. I'm sorry, but tht s the truth
Come on man! Lets show a little respect here. If you can still do that stances at his age you should be thankful. I impress with his kata especially for his age.
Also, look at the kata of the same demo of other masters who are sitting behind them. All are at his same age or older. Look at Zenpo Sensei, Minoru Higa Sensei, Ahagon Sensei, Kiyohide shinjo, Kurashita (Goju), Taira, Higaonna, Kikukawa, Iha.. Older than him or same age.. I'm telling the fact. Ofcourse, my teachers in Okinawa older than him and can do a good Shiko and nekoashi.. I'm sure I also will
Man, it seems that you have some bones to pick about the Yagi brothers for some odd reason? Plus you are preaching fallacy when you write "most Goju teachers die before 80's".
Sorry my friend.. I dnt hv any prob with Yagi brothers. Also, it's true and it's very famous thing in Okinawa, that Goju teachers die younger than Shorin teachers. Vere few Goju teachers passed 80's (Meitoku Yagi is fortunate). Many believe this is due to Sanchin training.
No that is a fallacy. I know many that are in their 80's that practice sanchin in their 80's. The problem is post WWII a lot died b/c of hypertension because they did not have proper medications to treat their maladies.
You really need to learn to seperate facts from oppinion. It's your so-called "educated" oppinion that someone else's stance, technique, basics etc...are weak (again, from your perspective). Just watching a video of a performance by someone (anyone) from a different style than yours, is by no means a way of judging that person's performance, abilities or character. Even someone from the same style (or even dojo) will have a unique quality to their form by "making it their own."
Also, your earlier comment about your deeper understanding of "showing respect" over us gaijin just because you are asian, was insulting to say the least and shows a complete disregard for "being respectful" towards others.
I have no doubt that you have some physical skills in the martial arts, but sadly, it seems that you were not taught some of the most important aspects of what makes a good martial artist...humility, kindness, awareness, diligence, & respect. Good luck training, you need it
Oh.. wht i mean is about the Asian way of respect and abt do, which many westerners cant understand, even after living whole life in Asia.. It's not an insult to Westerners.. Certain things in Western world cannot get in to Asian bodies and minds similarly.. It's your prob, u took it as an insult.. Gambatte Kudasai
True.. Masters of same style have many unique features. But, it doesn mean, you can lean forward in Shiko dachi.. It's wrong in any style. Same about weak stances.. Universal princeples of MA cant changed. Thank u
I agree with this point, you must always stay directly above the centre of gravity in order to be balanced, regardless of the stance or martial art - learning forward in that stance would put you off balance. Regardless of style, balance is key in any martial art.
I studied in Naha with Sensei Yagi. He is very powerfull.

I just have to laugh at some of the comments here complaining about the master's stance. You could

I love this performance because it is not concerned about looking pretty. You see power and practical application in every movement.

Check the info in the title box at the top of the page: this is a sensei of one of the main systems of Goju-Ryu, the Meibukan.
NMCK69 3 years ago
shito does this kata a bit differently, but both systems do it, and both have the same roots..ie...naha-te.
