  • @johnno4623185 just added some links... I think its the Atwell arr.

does anyone know where i can get sheet music for this exact version of the Black and White Rag? i found a few versions of the sheet music but its a different version from the one marty mincer plays.

  • Marty must be one of the fastest players there is.

He is so precise too and he plays with such a happy face on.

  • you haven't heard hyun-jung lim.

  • Hey I searched her now, yea she is blistering fast.

    Ciao

  • WOW!!! What a great piece of music!

  • Marty is a pal that I met here in Kansas City several years ago, and he MC'd and performed here at a KCRR Concert.

For a time, he was employed by the famous Jenkins Music Company while he resided here. Eventually, he returned to his farming/apple orchard enterprise back up in Iowa. Home sweet home!

He is a fun guy and obviously one fantastic piano player.

  • does anyone know where i can find the sheet music for this exact version of this rag?

  • What magical fingers!

  • Fantastic. Scott Joplin always said never play ragtime fast, but its more fun to play it fast.

Yeah good song. It's been altered from the original a little though.

  • Whoosh! You know it's great 'cause it's over TOO SOON!!

  • WONDERFUL TALENT. THANKS FOR THE FUN.

  • look how his left wrist seems to float over the keyboard....smoothness.

    great perfomance!

  • One of my favourite rag piece. And AMAZINGLY performed by marty mincer :).

  • when he does it like this, it just looks so easy:O But when I try myself...

  • Omg this is the first time I watched this vid... I just sat here in my seat and stared at his hands... Holy cow that was amazing! I felt like clapping with the ppl on the vid cos I've never really heard such amazing piano work at that kind of speed! Amazing... Just.... Completely.... Amazing!!!!

  • thats awesome!!!

  • The composer of this piece is George Botsford, not Scott Joplin. I know this because I am playing this piece now. But very good interpretation

  • Listen carefully. It is the Scott Joplin Festival - perhaps your confusion - but Marty CLEARLY says "George Botsford." He has known this piece for over 20 years, so I think he also knows the correct composer.

  • you just wana keep listening to it over and over because it's sooooo good!

  • That's the most goolest version of the song that's my 20ths time I listen to it.

    Gramophones 12.01.2008

  • Wow that is awesome!

  • This video is one of the best videos i've seen on youtube i hope one day i will be able to play the piano like you. Its so cool you played everything perfect!

  • Great Job Marty! 5 stars and Favorites!

    Tom Warner

  • wow!!! just look at that fingers!!!

  • Unbelievable!! That was fantastic!!

  • Hi, Folks. Just want to remind everyone that the Sedalia Ragtime Festival, in addition to the ticketed main stage shows that I shot, also features free outside daytime venues and an all-night, after hours, open-piano party. So if you have your own interpretation of this kind of music, by all means come on by and strut your stuff. All the top players like Marty started out that way and are often still the last ones standing when the sun comes up.

    Howard

  • Dear Marty,

Excellent playing and I loved your repeting the difficult 'decending arpeggio' section. Many have tried but you succeeded! Don't rush it too much and I look forward to your next version of this great rag. Tim Costello, Dublin.

  • This performance leaves a lot to be desired. It's not only played too fast, but so overly fast that he frequently misses notes and plays more than 2 keys at the same time --throughout.

His style creates an unrecognisable rendition since its key charm, and as one user mentioned "smoothness" is lost. I also don't like the way he has simplified the song from its extreme difficulty. A good pianist he may be, but this I'm afraid is out of his league- nobody has come close to Atwell's dexterity.

  • Dude - do you seriously think this was a bad performance? I'd give anything to be able to play 1/2 this good!!

  • I didn't say it was a bad performance, but it serves no justice to the beautiful rag that this is.

He's probably a very good pianist, and with the right piece I too might say "I wish I could play half that good", but I think this performance ruins the tune as it is meant to be played- and for a rag, that's a sin.

The way this clip has received relatively good reviews from most users has surprised me but given its difficulty and the listeners' knowledge of this, I suppose can be understood.

  • This is the first time that I've heard the original speed and exact style of Black & White Rag, but even upon listening to this, I prefer Winnifred Atwel's version that she recorded on her upright, as she played it a little slower, but alot smoother, whereas this seems not as smoothly played, but saying that, I still enjoyed listening to it and it gets a top rating :)

  • As long as people have been playing ragtime--that's how long it has been played fast. Not all ragtime is supposed to be fast (most Joplin-style ragtime should not be played this fast), but plenty of Tin-Pan Alley-style ragtime like this piece by George Botsford was written to be played as fast and showy as the performer wants.

  • Its usually played at this speed, and i think it sounds great like this.

  • he makes it look so easy, but boy is it fun

  • This is great, i did not know this piece could be played so quickly!!

  • This is reall excellent. He totally nails this recording.

  • simply brilliant

  • Marty nails this rag! Lovely tune.
