Dave was at the top of his league when it came to observational comedy. This takes me back so vividly, thanks for uploading - great work.
And... has anyone noticed, that no comments on here have taken the usual youtube path and degraded into some religious/ ethnic slagging off session?!...
One word srings to mind Pure Classic! Or is that two?
Its a real shame it has to be classed as classic why not have it in present (no pun intended) because there is no comedy now or if there is I dont find it funny
Thank goodness I have overcome my Catholic boarding school upbringing. I share his views on religion. Oh what a great comedian, thank you for the gift of these films.
this guy was a star! and i am the same frame of mind as "jamie",paganism,as the stupid christians called them, had a a lot of much cooler gods, than the omnipotent jewish scum.
Dave Allen was one of those rare band of people that could make you see the humour of ordinary life, the comedy in the most mundane of everyday routine and actions, and all the way up the scale to religion.
If people in Ireland ostacised him,it just goes to show how right he was all along.
what gets me is why the pagan gealic irish who had so many wonderful gods of their own were talked into believing in a shit religion from the middle east.
At the time he was hated in Ireland: hence his forced emigration. He was made berufsverboten (like John McGahern and Dermot Morgan) in Ireland... If it hadn't been for the English (who invariably made up his audience) he would never be heard of....The Irish forget too easily!
Now, does that mean he was forbidden to work in Ireland? I believe he was banned from Irish tv for years.I did read a quote from him where he said being Irish meant nothing to him and it was just an accident of birth. He hated nationalism. The irony is, he probably did more to dispel the English stereotypical view of the Irish than just about anyone.
If you knew Ireland you would know that there is no difference between 'forbidden' and 'not able to.' RTE (naitonal TV) still peals out the Angelus..Even years later, Dermot Morgan (Father Ted) had to go to work in England.. Berufsverboten.. The Jesuits and Opus Dei never miss a trick.. and the Irish? A Goddamn nation of religious Leprechauns!
So, in a way, Dave Allen was an utter outcast.. as was Joyce and , in the real but not apparent sense, Dermot Morgan... Tommy Tiernan has been besieged but priestly concerns; and in fairness to him he has resisted... But the main point I wish to make is this: without England, the Irish are -- and have ever been -- up a Roman gum tree! It's a pity they never realised that!
