Why do so many people keep repeating the same statement dumb asses why don't you read previous comments. As for the rider he looked gay as sat up like that. Bend ya arms man lol
Agreed, "this was not a scientific comparison." The mounting locations of the cameras are so very different as to render this exercise as one in futility. Sorry to say I found this comparison lacking and not helpful but thanks for trying. Next!
Why did he put the Drift in all the worst places (eg behind the bike's screen) and not the Go Pro. This makes the shots non-comparable. This is why I'm voting the video with a thumbs down.
Not a fair comparison in my view, why ? because the Drift is fully behind the screen which distorts the video, unlike the Gopro which isnt fully behind the screen. on the first clip. Furthermore they are mounted at different points in clip two.
A little unfair as the HD170 image was shot entirely through the fairing perspex which is not optically perfect. My only gripe with the drift is the audio.
gopro without any doubt... tested them both... gopro always stable.. long battery life, films good in low light situations... UNDER WATER... HD170.. nice design, nice functions.. but the optic part dont reach the quality of the gopro...
thank you very much for doing this!!! i see many assholes here judging and say thank you to this man because he took his time to show us both hi end HD cameras side by side! i feel so much better that i got gopro! :)
i ordered the drift Hd170 last week, got to test over the weekend.. Having used most POV cameras on the market, I have to say this was the worst product I have tested so far.. Video quality is poor in comparison to gopro footage.. Its too heavy to allow body worn apps, the build quality is cheap and tacky.. Only one thing to do, return and get a refund.. NOT a happy customer!!
@morgando2 or just without the sun screen in the way. =) I think the picture quality would have been the same. But the noise on the Drift while riding is a big turn off. I wonder if the drift sounds better when your just using the camera like a camcorder (louder audio since not in case)
the hd hero, colors are nice, sound sounds ok, but a camera of about €300, without a screen?? it's 2011, every €20 mp3 player has a color screen on it, so you can see what you're doing, but there's no need to see what your filming, crazy camera....
@DUCzillaMonster trust me GoPro is worth the money ive had mine for 5 months cost me $640 NZD and was worth every penny. i mount it all round the bike and when your actually watching it on your computer its 10x better then watching them off youtube
@2wheels4life123 i believe when your say the camera is worth the money, but i don't understand why it has no screen on it, i do not carry a laptop with me on vacation, so it's very nice to see if, for example, the camera position is OK
@DUCzillaMonster You can get a screen for it, and don't complain that it's stupid for not having one fitted as standard on such an 'expensive' camera, as if you look at the world of sport cars you pay more for less and less = lighter and greater preformance. Without the screen as standard the GoPro is a lighter, smaller, can fit the standard housing on the older HD model and uses up less processing power, which in turn also means a greater battery life.
Prefer the gopro. Try swapping the back to the open one to lessen wind noise, and condensation. Need to use 60fps at speed in any of these cams. HD at 30fps causes that underwater affect, and 60fps non hd ironically may prove best. Saw some underwater affect on cafe racer show last night. Love the suction cup and its versatility but helmet mount superior cause body soaks up the bumps better. General tips and not re this video :)
I don't think this is an entirely accurate comparison. The HD 170 is shooting directly behind the windscreen while the Go Pro is above and behind. My intial reation was that the H 170 image quality was poor but if I look through the windscreen with the Go Pro footage it's very similar. As far as sound goes I don't really care what the sound is I'm probably going to take it out at edit anyway.
@carbonrrpilot I had a demo version, but I think it came with everything retail. I think there is a mic but as an option, but I may not be right on that.
Why does the Drift HD170 sound like the audio is being recorded under water? It sounds terrible where all the other POV HD cameras on the market sound much better but video suffers?
@2UpDuc Because the GoPro has a external case to block wind. The video quality is about the same with both but the HD170 has more features. I own the HD170
Omg, was that really SIXTY-TWO seconds of static intro page? Jesus christ.
Image quality probably better on Hero HD, but way more features on the other, like an LCD screen, remote control, controlling settings directly on the camera etc.
lame video. the HD170 is shooting through the windscreen, which distorts the image, and the GoPro doesn't.

@alang0606 Behind the screen = best place for minimal windnoise. The GoPro was actually in a worse area for turbulence.

The drift can use its own mic that plugs in. this should give the user the ability to position the mic somewhere else.
morgando2 11 months ago
the mic on the pov's are not designed for high wind. replace the audio with your favorite song.

How did you mount the drift HD to your tank? with the suction cup mount?
sarahpod 11 months ago
OK, In order to get a good understanding of the visual comparison, ***BOTH CAMERAS MUST SHOOT SIDE BY SIDE.*** The exact same way.
