I can't help but wonder... if Deagol had won that fight instead of Smeagol, would he have ended up becoming Gollum?

They both seem to be similar hobbits from the start and it looked like the ring corrupted both of them the same, so if by luck Deagol got the upper hand and killed Smeagol, would he have gone through the exact same chain of events? Would we end up with an alternate Gollum falling into the fires of Mt. Doom?

The Ring wasn't forcefully taken. It was dropped by Smeagol and found by Bilbo in "The Hobbit"

Also, Smeagol always knew that Bilbo had the Ring, but decides to try and get it back when Frodo inherits it.

Actually Tolkien did write more about it. There were three races of Hobbits: Harfoots, Stoors and Fallohides. The Hobbits in the books are Harfoots, while the Stoors are the "river folk". Look it up on Wikipedia :-)

Tolkein's use of the ring is extremely symbolic, and the symbolism is straight forward. The ring is seen as absolute power. it is a power that everyone desires to have, so they will do anything for it. The only problem with this great power is that no one has the ability to control it; except for Sauron. Then if you take a look at how the power of the ring was able to be defeated be Isildur. This means that the absolute power of the ring is not as great as it is thought to be.
