Exactly. I bought my GTX260 when prices really started plummeting (of course they went further down afterwards, but that's normal) and back then it was the best bang for the buck. It's that simple....performs best for my needs = winner. I have always switched between Nvidia and ATI, because they tend to do things differently and not always right.
@nf1n1ty666 - Propaganda, it works... on some people. I'm sure the almost all of people who have cards that can do 10.1 have never used it for a dx10.1 game. I buy things based on reviews which show actually improvements for the things I play or are likely to play. Why pay for a feature you won't even use until the market matures?
Also do not call me a fanboy of the red camp; I only heard of ATI early last year and had been using a nVIDIA Quadro NVS280 for several years already. After reading numerous reviews and making personal comparisons, I concluded that R700 was superior. That's all.
I just collected my 4870X2 since I recieved an extra special price on it with a Phenom II. Anyway I haven't set it up (and won't be for a while), but in my opinion, for the current generation of graphics (R700 and G92/GT200), R700 is the winner. It beat nVIDIA everywhere and threw value for money on the table and several other pros in my opinion.
However I am interested to see what both sides come up with next. I don't have fanboy type support - I just like what I think's best.
...and then on the flip side, there's the GT200 core based GTX260.
First it had 192 shader cores, with 65nm fabrication.
Then it got upgraded to 216 shader cores, on the 65nm fab.
Then production shifted to a 55nm fab, and nV went to great lengths to tell its retail partners not to make distinctions in their marketing for the 'new' GTX260 from the other older versions.
lol... the 9 series wasnt just a rename, it was a different chip.
It performed the same for less power usage!
As for the GTX 100 stuff, that was in the works since 2007, they were changing the naming scheme for their entire range so they wouldnt end up calling cards the "10000" series, storm in a teacup.
8800 gs, 8800 GT and 8800GTS512 were based on the G92 core, the 9600 GS was based on the G94 core, the 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS 320\640 were based on the G80 core
G9x cores were part of the 9x00 series cards..
they were just released earlier, and nvidia had every intention of rebranding them, and made that clear when they released those cards early on.
And the 9800 GTX card is in fact based on the G92 core, when the 8800 GTX and 8800 ultra were based on the G80..
Nvidia introduced Hybrid Power that would allow video cards to go to sleep when not needed.
The problem starts here: Your motherboard has to support it. It has to be equipped with certain Nvidia-Chipsets. All others are blocked by the driver.
But it goes on: It was supposed to be a 9000-series feature, but 9600 GT and lower do not support it.
AND IT STILL GOES ON: Nvidia allowed partners to repackage 8800 GT to sell as 9800 GT, naturally without Hybrid Power support.
What do you think is the reason for that? Well of course, Nvidia doesn't have any 65nm-G92 left. If they had, they would just continue selling them as 9800 GT.
Shader and clockwise a vanilla 9800 GTX is exactly the same as a vanilla 8800 GTS 512.
Though I don't know what a difference that makes now. The damage has been done, trust has been lost on many fronts. Though I guess they got what they deserved. Nvidia behaved like a douche all the way from Geforce 2 till today.
The 'G92' chip was introduced with the 8800GT/GTS512, which were later reused for the 9800GT/GTX respectively.
Derivatives of G92 (G96, G94, etc.) were used for the lower end cores while 55nm 9800GTs and GTXes (called GTX+) were sent out, which mildy reduced power consumption. Even so it's still mostly a rebrand.
so you really think amd will keep the price where it is now? im sure they will both have very similar price/performance ratio when nvidia gets released.
GTX 295 is not 100 dollars cheaper. The 4870x2 goes for 400-450 euro's and the GTX 295 is currently priced at 480 euro's minimum! And ATi didn't even lower the prices yet, which I think they will.
295 will just be another power consuming monster. Sure it's going to beat the 4870x2 but that's no wonder given the power it needs and heat it generates.
So you say that we should support ATI lies in order to get lower prices?! No way! I'll get the card which gives me the best run for my money, and as I really like performance without heating/noise/drivers problems, I will still get Nvidia for the high end.
In the mid/low end there's a different story, as I'll get soon a HD4670 :)
You're right with the card which gives the best for the money you spent, but the catalysts works very well for the HD4xx0 series and the GTX series of nvidia is louder, while the ati HD48x0 are warmer.
We are the only responsible for this disaster called nvidia, as long as fanboys keep paying premium prices up $800, who doesn't remember 8800GTX price at $599 one year ago, competition is the only key to keep reasonable prices, now we can get a premium card as gtx 260 or 4870 for under 300 bucks. I blame nvidia for a defective video card I bought for my dell vostro 1500, 8600GT which I Paid $200 extra, was overheating & freezing my 1 grand laptop, guess how much I spent total to get it fixed $700.
You're forgetting how defective ATI's products are though. You only need to look at how many people have had issues with 4800 cards to stray away from buying them (IE: Driver/heat/noise/performance issues that are much more common on newer ATI hardware then on current generation nvidia hardware), Especially after expirencing this first hand (Why do you think I went and got a GTX 280 two weeks after getting my HD4870? because of the gay issues as explained).
Do you think listening to rumors helps you spend the bucks better?
That problem was solved... and it only was for the 4850 in CF under Vista 64. Did you plan such a system?... If not, then your argument isn't a good one.
An advice, don't give into that fanboysh BS... read the tech articles and make up your own mind about it!
I running 2 4850 cards in X-Fire on vista 64 bit. I have never had a single issue. Don't forget that the vocal minority is the complainers and fanboys. The silent majority is pleased with whatever they use.

If you're making fun of nVIDIA's rebrand I totally agree xD.
Anyway I'm probably getting a 4870X2 soon.

1 Comm by me:
The GTX295 is to get for a price of 440€ and the 4870x2 is priced at 455€ these are the lowest prices, which show a difference of 85€.
The first Tests have shown one thing: The GTX295 is the most potent Graphics by now.
Without AA and AF it is up to 40% better than the HD4870x2.
In 1900x1080 and with 8xAF and 8xAA the GTX295 is a maximum of 20% in front, in average it is 5%.
At the same time the GTX295 is much louder than the HD4870x2.
michisauer 3 years ago
sry, the 4870x2 is priced 100€ lower, tipped the wrong number.

9 series cards were essentially a rename, 9800GT was same as 8800GT, 9800GTX was same as 8800GTS.
Later they changed these cards to 55nm process.
Only 9600GT was something different.

haha, nice try.
except I was talking about G92 8800 GTS.
I know all about the cores and stuff. Nvidia named G92 cores 8800GT with 112 Shader's and 8800GTS with 128 Shaders.
8800 GS is the same card 9600GSO with 96 shaders and 384-bit bus.
9800GT is the same card as 8800GT with 112 shaders on a 256-bit bus.
9800GTX is the same card as 8800GTS G92 512MB with 128 shaders on 256-bit bus.
so the fact is , a rename is a rename, even if you tell the world if you are going to do so.

riDDimann 3 years ago
The 9800GTX is essentially a somewhat overclocked 8800GTS.
9800GTX+ has an even higher stock clock which is made possible by its smaller process (55nm vs 65nm).
Also G94, G96, etc. were all derived from G92 - essentially all shrunken cores with less shaders, but all using the same G92 architecture.

Yeah, the 9800GTX is the exact same core (albeit with PERHAPS a few refinements). However they overclocked it a little:
(Core/Shader/Memory)
8800GTS-G92: 625/1625/1940
9800GTX: 675/1688/2200
9800GTX+: 738/1836/2200
salanos 3 years ago
You're right, the 9800 is clocked an itsy-bitsy-bit higher ;P Though the GTS runs at 650.
Yep, 25 MHz definetly justified the $50 price premium upon release, alright.
riDDimann 3 years ago
It's nVIDIA after all. They overcharge for alot of things. I mean like, S and X are SO TOTALLY DIFFERENT!!! PAY US $50 FOR THAT OVERCLOCK :)
