i believe he says a little chickity boom, refering to the style of drumming he liked to have behind him. maybe next he says one sick yeh or one stinkin a, meaining cant you play that way for one seciton of the song?
either way, amazing to see prez in action, rare stuff
@charliethebirdparker Nope, I don't, unfortunately. However, I believe the rest of this performance has been released on DVD. I don't have the details, though. Happy hunting!
@frederikolsen It is released in cd/dvd "Coleman Hawkins The Centennial Collection". about 2004.In some of the perfomences , "Avalon" and"Jumping with Symphony Sid" there plays Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins together at Art Ford Jazz Party Newark NY 25/09/1958
@joemaranzano You're welcome. I uploaded this on my dad's behalf, since he doesn't have a YouTube account. But the more great performances on here, the merrier!
@anicetocecchetti i'm fairly certain he's admonishing the drummer for to many bomb drops. he's asking for some "tinky boom" which is lesterease for simple light time. not sure just what i was able to get out of it.
Gracias por compartirlo.

I think he says 'a little tinky boom' and they don't hear what he says so he repeats himself 'little tinky-boom [for] one sec, you dig?'

I don't know, after he says it, the guy in the white shirt seems to over to the drummer, and after that here little more pop from the drummer.

I think that Lester says to the tech(s) "check your booms"
refering to the microphones on telescoping "booms"
this could be a sound check

Great melodic lines he displays, and very good command of his instrument.

@mikelz777 I think you're right: after that, the drummer leaves brushes and switches on sticks.

what says Lester at minute 1:08?
anicetocecchetti 1 year ago
@anicetocecchetti No idea. However, my dad suggested it might be "change your bones", "bones" being slang for trombone in this case.

@anicetocecchetti "A little tink-ity-boom?.......one set today?"..........Lester seems unhappy with the drum section.

I've seen this video once before elsewhere. Lester is asking the drummer to play in the style he's used to.
