  • Proud to be related to this guy :)

  • shoulda entered the guitar center drum offs

  • richard hoak of brutal truth is a bit inspired by max roach, at least that's what i think

  • @Jimbengoz good for him.

  • @Teabonesteak do you like brutal truth? i love them! their latest album "End Time" is also a bit sludgy

  • @Jimbengoz sometimes I need to remind myself what good music really sounds like.

  • @Teabonesteak you want sludge? Melvins-Houdini.

  • @Teabonesteak why did you send a message to yourself?!? :)

  • Happy birthday Max.

  • looks like a fuckin crackhead playing drums

  • @spanky8473 crackheads don't usually dress that snappy.

  • More like....BaROCK Obama.

  • @numanuma20 no, it wasn't like that, max roach is a worldwide famous musician. hail max roach!

  • Comment removed

  • Rest in peace max

  • Yesterday I saw a roach in my room and I killed it, now I wish I hadn't.

  • @wikiemol2 eeehhhh???

  • @Jimbengoz his name was max.

  • anyone who disliked this has a small brain

  • I understan people who cant appreciate this solo, they clearly have no experience or knowledge of drum dinamycs. Mantaining that pattern is very complex, despite the fact that it seems like he is going mental, the pattern with the feet and what he does on top is insanely technical.

  • THIS GUY SUCKS! HE CAN'T KEEP A SINGLE BEAT LIKE TRAVIS...just kidding

  • hey can some1 help me out here with the foot pattern, is he playing a really strange time sig or hitting strange accents in 4/4 cos it sounds kinda sloppy, dont mean it in a bad way if you get what i mean. insane feel anyway!

  • He's my favorite drummer!

  • Considering that double bass was pioneered in the 40s by jazz drummers, it's an absolutely bizarre thing to say here.

  • dont listen to them

  • Comment removed

  • wot the frak is he doing? but its nice

  • imagine him with double bass.

  • @MASSRCOR fuck double bass

  • @kingdomEPIC what an idiotic thing to say xD

  • @MASSRCOR actually it's not, he is already using his left foot for the hi hat pedal, so fuck double bass :)

  • @KOI2N1 what's up with these pretentious IDIOTS that think it's cool not to use double bass. It's just another facet to add to drumming, fuckin IDIOTS can't see that.

  • @MASSRCOR look dude, this is Jazz, if you want double bass go listen to metal

  • @Morningstardrummer agreed dont watch a musician and try to think he would be better by adding something .he's there and your not .

  • @Morningstardrummer Besides, some drummers can use a single bass with both their heel and toe, to make a double bass sound, if not better.

  • Check out Barack rockin out on the drums

  • RIP Max Roach

  • whaatttt is gooiinnngg onnnnn?! AAAHHHHHHHH!!!

  • @GPaDLA Max Roach is what's going on!

  • i don't know why but when i see him hitting everywhere he seems so noob and i know he's a great drummer but somehow i just dun think dig any thing he ever did.

  • This is a bit bizarre, but you'll understand it if you look with your third eye.

  • The important thing to remember is that Max Roach is Max Roach, not Buddy or stupid Jordison. Max was making his solos or playing not about the hit, but about the picture, poem, mood whatever way you want to put it. In Third eye think of it as the elements wood and metal fighting each other. More importantly, he contributed to the world given the fact that he was famous during the Civil Rights Movement. Listen to "We Insist! Freedom Now Suite" and you'll know what I mean.

  • What's with the criticism? Max Roach knows what he's fucking doing in this solo, stop being all jelly, haters.

  • @AeroAstro Buncha kids who think they're the shit because they can play along to a Blink 182 song and have heard of Buddy Rich at the SAME TIME and are therefor better than one video of Max Roach because he dares to change tempo.

  • that sound of wood and metal just turns me on

  • People are really missing the point of what Max is trying to do here. I think this is fantastic. It's different, unconventional and very expressive. To the people who think this is "Random hitting" and is "not a proper drum solo" due to lack of structure.. that is your opinion, but you should really open your mind a bit more. This is poetry in motion - hurried, frantic, maddening pulse.. this is supposed to be in your face, bold and choppy. This is beautiful.

  • So.....hes a great jazz drummer, but his solos man, kind of just is random ass drum hitting......pretty simple lol..... no story telling or main idea hes expressing but overly excessive drum hitting. Sounds like a kid. Just because hes keep time with his feet doesnt mean anything....u could keep time easily with your feet and randoimy hit things on top lol Anyway, no disrespect but not my favorite ha

  • @Drummerjazz7 Play it then. Figure out every motion he's doing and play it. Tell me it's easy after that.

  • @MrJellyman300 well i wouldn't want to attempt to play it because i think it sounds stupid. the thing about youtube is there are people like you that only want to hear positive comments and not the negative ones.

  • @blight4hire This is true, because lets think about this. We are fighting over the internet. It's sort of dumb.

  • This expresses my feelings in this specific moment. Or maybe it created something new in my soul that I've never felt before. I may have just now felt God hearing to this or maybe I didn't... Sorry I'm only talking about myself. This is awesome!

  • @RockDrummah96 nah, just for this song.

  • he doesn't always over use the rims like that right? I mean, I liked the solo and I'm new to Max Roach but do all jazz drummers really just chop out on the rims like that the whole friggen time? lol

  • no se oye!

  • What is enlightenment? Not satisfied what all the chakras and third eye talk?psychic abilities and powers, it is all possible.Go to THE-HIDDEN-SPIRITdotCOM , your search is finally over.

  • christ I have nooooo idea how he can keep time like that @.@ drumming like that is just as hard as counterpoint

  • You guys are being retarded. Max Roach can keep time with his feet while he chops out with his hands. If his feet are speeding up when the tension builds in the hands, it's obviously intentional. He's stretching the time, because he can do that, because he's a good musician. Notice that he returns to the original tempo after each barrage of notes. If it was unintentional he would notice the tempo change and probably look frustrated.

  • @papasmurfdrummer Hes a great drummer, but this solo and the whole keeping time thing.....its not really keeping time....try setting a temp to that, there is hardly any base to what the tempo is man. Its not that hard doing swing LRLR with the hi hat and bass drum....even though it supposedly is in 5/8, his hands are randomly hitting things and dont have much control to the tempo. Its easy and hes setting an illusion with his feet, with the hi hat and kick drum so seem like hes keeping time :P

  • wow that's so wild Love it!

  • The mark of a great drummer to compose a blowback solo, while barely hitting the heads!

  • Wow I have the same problem with hitting the rim as this guy!

  • @Fortificatio not funny....

  • this is certainly a more frantic/frenetic solo but thats the point.it captures a particular sort of feeling and does it well.roach is all about melodies and narratives so i'm sure theres something to this thats maybe even taken out of context with this specific clip.roach is one of the greatest jazz drummers ever and not because he had immaculate technique and by no means to is that the mark of excellence, its the creative spirit that is infused with every phrase and the search for fresh ideas.

  • Drummed for 2 years, specializing in bossa nova and jazz, but I have troubles finding his rhythm ^^

  • Want to see real enlightenment techniques?Figured out that most information out there is recycling the same words?Discover your true psychic abilities.Search no more, THE-HIDDEN-SPIRITdotCOM is the end of the road.

  • Oh! So now I know who bill bruford is ripping off..

    Kidding, they're both amazing

  • Max Roach is one of my favorite jazz drummers. Probably one of my favorite drummers in any genre. That said, I hate this video. Play the drums, Max, not the rims or the shells!!! What are you doing? The ostinato was sloppy. Though I probably couldn't do it, doesn't mean I can't recognize it. Drum solo 2 posted by jazzart1 is way better than this. There is no trademark jazz subtlety in this performance. It reminds me of something a mathcore drummer would do.

  • If one of the founding fathers of bebop, a man with album after album full of tastefully clean and subtly polyrhythmic licks, decides to play this kind of solo, wouldn't your time be better spent contemplating why he did so, rather than complaining that he's not playing along to a click-track?

  • While I personally enjoy this video, I cant argue that if his face was blurred out and the title was just "crazy dude flailing on drums", no one would argue it was good.

  • @poptya

this video is retarded. I mean, I get it, hes taking drums/percussion to somewhere it hasn't been, hes actually PLAYING the drums lol. I understand that its not necessarily about the music in this case but the progression of music. But like you said, if this WASN'T M.Roach, no one would even think twice about it.

  • anyway, that kick/hhat ostinato should be more precise

  • Can anyone identify those drums he's playing here? They look strikingly similar to my 80s Ludwig Rockers.. but surely they're not Rockers! Ha!

  • ...The Picasso of drummers. He probably payed for dinners by rapping on his water glass with a spoon.

  • If this vid had a blur over his face and the name "max roach" removed from the title, this would go viral for how bad it is. If you have to "explain" to someone why it's good, it isn't.

Kids, don't let this be your first or last exposure to the great Max Roach. But rather, wipe your memory clean of this self-gratuitous bullshit and remember his focused and purposeful playing from the 40's/50's.

  • @drummmhead let's hear you play it. moron

  • Great!

  • anyone can do this! (kidding)

  • sound like my nephew

  • reminisce on pee wee herman

  • If I can be an instrument,I will not chose to be a drum(it looks hurt......)

  • Holy Moly! Max is excellent!

  • max...open your 1st and 2nd eyes your missing the heads!

  • This is what it would look like if Obama played the drums.

  • @thenecrophagist And sound like, too.

  • 54 people have no understanding of "music"

  • @andrei320 Not exactly,56 people should stop playing drums or any other instruments, for music sake.

  • @andrei320 this isnt music its just drum beating.

  • @VegensRCows awful

  • @andrei320 58

  • how long do you think max practiced that bassdrum/hihat rhythm?

  • thats how drums should be played!!!!!!!!

  • The man is a machine!!!

  • That's pretty tight!

  • but what's the point, "establishing" a pattern at the begining with bas drum and hi-hat and than completely forget the rhytm of it?

    sory for my english

  • @Kranstafarian I agree. He does the same thing with "the drum also waltzes" I think it would be much more impressive if that rhythm remained thoughout and he continued with it. Many drummers have actually done that when covering Max Roach solos including Bill Bruford and Neil Peart. It's more impressive in my opinion. He just loses the beat when he goes ape shit nuts and for me it takes away the point.

  • @Kranstafarian its not forgotten, its there the whole time.

  • Didn't feel like roach

  • blakey the best

  • significant

  • Pure feeling and innovation!

  • master of rhythm!

  • Interesting

  • I have mixed feelings about this. My favorite Max Roach periods were the 50's, with the Quintet he co-led with Clifford Brown and some of his work in the 60's and his M'Boom percussion ensemble of the 70's. This appears sloppy, but I understand his intent.

  • Max Roach > Buddy Rich

  • Max Roach is so amazing, he can make cymbal stands sound beautiful.

  • the people who leave negative comments about Max Roach clearly have no intellect about percussion or innovation. i am sure they are happy listening to their crappy nu-metal bands. if you want to listen to a real drummer try art blakey, max roach or buddy rich.

  • @sugarcoatedsour

    or jo jones :P

  • @sugarcoatedsour Clearly, you blow a ton of gob.

  • this guy sucks. anyone who thinks this is good like to slop on knobs hourly.

  • @splatonurback anyone who makes ridiculous comments like that know jack shit about drums or music...

  • clearly he is making music right here. I love listening to his solos because he starts off with an idea and branches from it to create something amazing

  • Wow this reminds me so much of Indiscipline with KC & Bill Bruford.

I would say there was some influence coming from the legend Roach,

& it rubbed itself right onto Bruford lol

  • absaloutely awesome yeahhhhhhhhh.....

  • wow.... my head almost blew up!

  • "drum-stick of destiny"

  • woo hoo!!!

  • It's really cool how he hits the shells and rims of his drums as much if not more than he uses the head. Really nice solo from the golden age of set players.

  • HOYL LIMB INDEPENDENCE, BATMAN

  • comments regarding this expression captured by the video camera are FUEDAL! Max was a cool cat and a masterful musician. I want to remember that above all.

  • the texture of this solo is amazing. i love how creative and musical it is. there are certainly chops being displayed, but the solo isn't great because of them. Thomas Lang is one of those "WOW" guys who amazes you with his sheer virtuosity. i listen to this solo on the other hand and walk away thinking, "hmmm. i never thought about it like that before..."

  • What a friggin' genius ...

  • yea he reached a level that only maybe a few artists other than himself can taste a fraction of what he wanted to express

  • this video is weird

his time is TOO off for it to actually be a mistake.. additionally there's another video here on youtube where he pulls this ostinato perfectly. no doubt he knows what he's doing, but i do think it sounds bad

  • I love Max Roach's earlier stuff, but this, eh, he's trying too hard to be "musical" here in my opinion. It's just plain uninteresting to most people. None of this bullshit about "understanding" what he's doing is relevant, in the end, it still sounds like he's hitting the shit out of his drums.

  • I say you're all making this too complicated! It sounds cool, and I like it.

  • It's close to 5/4 but he's shorting the space between 4 and 5 too much. I think it's 11/8 with a 3-3-3-2 phrasing. Towards the beginning he definitely speeds up a bit but he never loses the time. Max was really known for melodic solos so I'd bet he's singing through a head while playing.

  • foxbabe02: A quick look at your channel favorites indicates you spend most of your time looking at Japanese anime. Not a single jazz clip, much less solo drums.

Again - PLEASE stop posting about things beyond your level of understanding.

  • foxbabe02: No, sorry. It is you that doesn't know what you're listening to. I'll repeat:

Max's time is for shit on this, and on "The Drum Also Waltzes". The fact is he did not have the technique to pull off what he was trying to do. His feet speed up and get uncoordinated the more complicated his hands get. That's not intentional. It's poor execution.

It's clear to ANYONE with basic listening skills, which you do not have. Please stop posting about things beyond your level of understanding.

  • people who think that the timing is off are poor listeners. He is using a 5/4 beat, tripleting whole sections, and changing the bpm. lol just because YOU dont hear the time doesnt mean that it isnt there. Fools....

  • Max kept pushing and trying new things until the end, as so stayed relevant long after most of his contemporaries. His exploration of new timbres is what's most interesting here, with the clicking of wood and metal and the ringing overtones, and typical of how he kept searching for something new to be excited about in his own playing.

  • he looks like Obama

  • Garbage.

Max Roach's be-bop was stellar, as well as some of his post-bop. Later one though, he relied on the white intellectual crowd to validate his playing. He knew he could play garbage like this and get away with it.

Max's time is for shit on this, and on "The Drum Also Waltzes". The fact is he did not have the technique to pull off what he was trying to do. His feet speed up and get uncoordinated the more complicated his hand get. Sorry, that's not intentional. It's poor execution.

  • You guys who say this guy is horrible need to go take classes and learn how to really play. also while you are at it look up the definition of viruosity and you will find out how much you pale in comparison the this man. I feel sorry that this man's memory is being defiled by those who believe they have experience. That is all.

  • Jazz is not about how well it sounds even though almost all of it does sound good. and Bebop will not sound good to the musically inexperiences, @MASSRCOR , This guy is a legend and has nothing to do with metal except the fact that he invented the genre that metal came from.

  • he was moving pretty good for an old guy .-.

  • It's actually simpler than any of you actually think. His feet are keeping a simple 5/4, very common among jazz drummers of his era. His hands are doing a combination of singles, doubles, diddles, you name it. It's simplicity in it's most sophisticated form.

  • damn mosquito will not get off his drums!

  • @blitzerkrik that could be the comment of the year!!!! lmao. i took a class from him in college and he could play anything. he is a professor, what else is suppose to play like.... to the Max!

  • @blitzerkrik

Just wanna let you know that I laughed my dick off the entire video because of this comment.

  • I dont like it at all...No offences!

  • Does anyone knows if there is a complete video or dvd of these exact performances that are online? or at which video does this belongs?

    thanks

  • intense

  • barrack obama?

  • @MrChopinMan

    ahahahah LOL

  • @MrChopinMan lmao so true man

  • thats not entertaining though

  • It's going to sound patronising, but Max is delivering a musical expression too advanced for many here to understand. There IS a thread of time running here in his playing, he knows where he is and what he's doing.

This is inevitably going to come across as arhythmic thrashing about to the musically inexperienced; it's not.

  • @jonescrusher1

    WELL PUT

  • Well put.

  • Well put.

  • @jonescrusher1 Really he is not? Me and you can both agree you would not listen to this as a song, so then what is he doing? it doesn't take a diploma to know what he is doing, its called showing off and thrashing on a drum kit.

  • @DruminBobby Well, you're wrong.

  • @DruminBobby What do you mean "you would not listen to this as a song"? I just saw your comment here, because I had portions of this performance stuck in my head all day and I wanted to hear them again. In the same way I might have a song or portions of a song stuck in my head.

  • @DruminBobby If you only understood complex rhythms... see his hi-hat and bass are constantly keeping a straight rhythm. If he's playing in 4/4 (off-time, accents on the ANDS with the bass drum) he'll be doing extremely complex patterns that eventually catch up to eachother. I.e. 7 note triplet patterns (seven notes in the time of four) on all sides of different drums to evoke particular sounds out of them. You clearly don't understand music or rhythm so take your ignorance somewhere else.

  • @DaveDFFA why does it matter if his bass drum is playing a straight rhythm? he doesn't swing once in this whole drum solo. and he doesn't even keep that constant, he just goes apeshit at around 0:35 with his bass drum hitting random notes. your trying to make it technical because he's supposed to be the best.

  • @DruminBobby personally I think jojo is the " best" technical drummer, but I can hear the stuff that he's doing and it IS complex and is amazing. If you don't like it, watch another drum solo, maybe salsa or funk or something. He's demonstrating mastery of the kit in his own style and he's incredible and what he does.

  • @DruminBobby read the top rated comment, I've counted this out and it works.

  • @jonescrusher1 --i agree with you--there is alot more going on here than meets the eye/ear........ im a musician and former drummer and still its somewhat over my head, but i still enjoy it immensely...... one of the most musical drummers ever!

  • @jonescrusher1

Look, Im a drummer myself, this is basic 16th 32nd 64th notes played in no advancted sticking pattern. Basic R L R L. Try as you might, This solo is bad, horrible accents and all around basic playing. Trust me, I know a bad solo when i see one, he might have been on herion at the time. Its bad, Deal with it.

Go check out some buddy rich, then you might be right.

  • @SMWhit3out There's no accounting for taste, is there?

  • @SMWhit3out take a look more of MAX ROACH ..-he is a true master .

  • @jonescrusher1 thanxs for clarifying maestro

  • @jonescrusher1 Here what you're saying, feel it, hear it and sense it on multiple levels! Rather than holding on to the physical BD/HH pattern, he lets it go and continues to build the rest of the kit around the sense and tension of that pattern, returning occasionally to it as a sort of thematic touch-stone. This kind of thing has all but vanished from most popular music and seems esoteric and maybe weird to the average listener. Just throwing it out there.

  • Great drummer, but...

    Terrible solo :/

  • This solo sucks, but Max Roach doesn't.

  • Comment removed

  • @MASSRCOR You're telling telling me to get with the times? ok dude. I'll admit it's obviously not Max Roachs' best work but someone who sucks doesn't really go on to have the career he has. But hey you're a metal drummer who's been playing for a whole 9 years so I guess you would be an expert on the subject

  • This is how you get an endowment of the arts for $400K!! Don't laugh, Max knew the system.
