  • This lady is a fantastic actress she can play ant part i watched this programme it was really upsetting to see this lady who had this illness die.

  • JW was absolutely amazing as Dr Anne Turner in the drama.I'm not sure the drama set out to 'promote' assisted suicide as such.I felt that they simply wanted to portary one person's journey towards making the decision to determine when to die.I have a 'life-limiting' illness and I absolutely demand the right to decide the time at which I am no longer prepared to live, and to be able to die with dignity!

  • I am so in favour of assisted suicide and this movie, which i just watched, really reinforced it. i understand there's two sides to every conflict, so i guess i can accept people who disagree with assisted suicide, but i know for me personally i wouldnt want to continue living like that. regardless of anything else, i also thought it was superb acting.

  • I just realised there's a typo in my comment it's meant to say part not park. And I know no-one is interested in this but I can't edit it so I just wanted to let people know that I do know :)

  • Sorry I meant on the second page not the last. I just wanted to say that the drama was a brilliant piece of drama. I thought that Julie Walters was amazing in the park. I have always thought she is a wonderful dramatic actress as well as a wonderful comedic actress. And I felt she gave the role the respect it deserved and really got to grips with the character. I understand this drama has brought this debate to the public eye and all. But I for one, like others found it very emotional to watch.

  • I just want to say that I agree with Freddie6868. And Marchone7 I thought that comment on the last page was going to be your last. I don't want to start an arguement and i'm not saying that no-one is bothered about conditions in nursing homes, etc... cause they are. I'm just saying that on-one really seems interested in your comments anymore.

  • i wasn`t going to bother with a reply to you, but you wrote such rubbish i had to CORRECT you.

freedom of speech and personal opinion are a basic human right. switzerland as a country in there laws give the people the basic human right to end their life. "culling of the weak" dr anne turner practised medicine for over 30 years, a profesional woman, who didnt make her decision likely!. your remark is probably the most insulting thing you wrote.

  • Join my MAKE JULIE WALTERS A DAME group on facebook. Following the drama 'A short stay in Switzerland'. Thanx

  • the same people who yapped and cry,d probably are the same people who have a callous indifferance to human life, in there daily lives to the abuses of the older generation who systematically are treated like shite in nursing homes, throughout the uk.

  • such a statement to make freedom of speech overated, your exactly the type of nazi i would expect to fall on the side of culling the weak, you should get a job in a somerset nursing home, you could surpress all the speech you want in that befitting envoirment, fucking jibbering idiot.

  • theres two sides to the arguement fred my side is as valid as yours, the turner family by consenting to have the programe made, were inviting debate not some ficlke sympathy from the likes of you with your false tearful glibe crap.

  • freddie ,if you havent the capacity, for this discussion piss off, you want me to start rolling of one liners. very serious subject if you have something to say, try and make something to do with the debate, otherways find some where else to not be remotely funny are flippant, fuck off and discus eastenders, are the latest soccer signing outrage.

  • i wouldnt hesitate in helping any of my family do the same if they were ill

  • marchone7, goodbye.

  • the story that was portayed in sunday evenings moving drama was absolutely heartbreaking to watch, most comments on here state...i was in tears....my gran/dad/mum.... the whole tale hit an emotion with most viewers, can you imagine living it?

the family have my total respect, i personally probably wouldnt choose the same ending, but i dont critise the turner family or anyone else who made/makes the courageous decision to take this path, may god bless Dr Anne Turner, and her children

  • marchone7......youve single handedly shown why freedom of speech is probably overated..

  • I Was in bloody tears

  • amazing, my mum was in tears. julie walters is one of my all time favs.

  • this is the last, im going to say on this subject unless some chooses to take me to task on anything ive said, apparently according to a friend of mine whos mother died from this condition, seemingly julie walters played the part perfectly, so im withdrawing any harsh statements i mdae about her acting on sunday after the showing.

  • who would govern this cull, people who cant even oversee the rancid hospitals cant be bleached down, stop the knee jerk reactions and think of the implications, of a law assisting death.

  • theres a lack of respect from the medical profession, and contempt towards the public, you people should be more concerned that your 15 times more likely to contact a killer bug from a dirty hospital in the uk, thats 15 times more likely than the next satistic, not overall,

  • i dont want to get personal, with the family of doctor turner, are be desrespectful to her memory.she was a doctor and could have very easy took her own life without making aham fisted attempt that was portrayed, in the drama, i think she was making astatement on behalf of many of her fellow doctors,

  • i bet you half the people who condone this type of thing, would be the first to be up in arms,if for instance the uk was to implement, leathal injection as a form of reintroducing the death penalty in the uk.

  • no i wouldnt

  • that nurse from somerset, could very well take the view, that she was doing these people a favour, despacthing them at the very least people who advocate the culling of old and infirm, would give her comfort she was killing lesser beings.

  • you dont have to go to another country to be killed, theres a crowd today caught in somerset nursing home, who were dispacthing old and infirmed people,a nurse of all things, i think im starting to get an indepth, insight into people who move through the medical profession of the uk, there seems to be a culture however small, at the moment it maybe, who need to be monitored very carefully. and certainly dont need to be further endowed with any more power, than they have.

  • amazing drama that was

  • are switzerland

  • you dont have to go to swzerland to take your own life. for me to die any were by my own country of origin would be awful,if your ever in those circumstances, you could kill yourself in your own home very easy.

  • I have just watched the above mentioned programme and after watching my father suffer and die from a terminal illness, I wish that we could have had some facility to ease his pain. In his lucid state he was very sad. If I am ever diagnosed with a terminal disability. It will be at my request that I have assisted euthanasia. I never want my family to have to live through any of my suffering and if it means a trip to Switzerland - so be it.

  • are there committies, monitoring the treatment of old people,in old people homes, i must say there doing a fine job of it,

  • blocky you sound like you know you way around economics, by the lanuage you use i can tell you economists would be the last people you would want involved are leading the cull.

  • was there a death panel in switzerland blocky, who would make up this panel. a fine body of human beings beyond suspision, perhaps like the people in the house of lords, fine upstanding citizens.

  • I wish we had been aware of this option when my Gran was sick it would have saved her a lot of suffering.

  • And finally, it was an amazing tv show which I've now noted as one of those things that make you truly contemplate everything around you. Plus Julie Walters was excellant in it!

  • to say dr anne was brave is an understatement, but i think her kids were so strong and brave. and i am sure their mother was proud too...i think its terrible that anyone that deperate to die...has to travel all that way to do it, and it should be available in this and every other country. To be able to die in comfort and with people you love and love you, should be available to everyone.....

  • ...they can be tried for murder. If it can be proven that the decision was made in the right state of mind by the person, then nobody should be made to suffer for carrying out a humane act as usually, the idea of continuing life, for instance, with a debilitating illness is worse then bringing an end to life!

It is vital that rules and protocals are put in place to make sure euthanasia isn't abused, but all in all, I believe it is something that should be made legal.

  • Marchone! The discusion isn't solely about whether or not the government should help the person commit suicide. It is often simply debated whether they should make it legal for Euthanasia. If made legal, there would be a committee designed to decide whether or not the persons wishes to die in such a way are right or not, as it is with countries which do allow it, so simple `depression` would not be allowed, clinical depression maybe. Plus if a family member or friend helps the process....

  • if i were in those circumstances i would end my life but idont the goverment, should assist me in anyway. although it is ironic that the goverment doesnt see fit to dispacth sick old people, yet they permit abortion.

  • do you think the law should be changed in the uk regarding people in this position///?

  • Marchone7 it's not lies, it was not a story based on Julie Walter's life it's her playing Dr Anne Turner who was indeed a real doctor and really did comit suicide in Switzerland. Also, yes ofcourse she was paid for it, it's her job but by 'recognition' tenterde16 means that she deserves and award because she played this role incredibly well.

I just watched it and cried uncontrollably for the second hour! It was very distressing but so moving and well portrayed.

  • i think brenda fricker could have played the part better, i mean she worked in casualty.

  • i think she got payd for it,

  • You are missing the point. I know it's a play about actual fact. Julie Walters recognition ment an award for her part in the role of Dr Anne Turner.

  • she was recognised, i knew it was her right away they also put her name up. at the end of the show in the tittles.

  • Julie Walters was simply amazing in her role of Dr Anne Turner. One felt for this Courageous Woman through her early days of illness to her final moments with her loved ones. No human should suffer with any terminal disease. Miss Walters should be recognised in this sensitive role.

  • really julies still living, so is she a doctor are was this all a tissue of lies. you cant believe anything, on that bloody tv.

  • watch the orginal BBC news interview - you can see how well this drama was observed and researched

  • Its a film it wasnt julie walters that died!!!

  • I think they knew that- twas a joke- albeit poss a bit in poor taste!

  • i love julie walters, amazing actress and an amazing programme. i cried and cried!

  • Ah very sad :( just watched it on Tv. Agree with Mozart579 very much

  • Just watched this on TV & it seems about time the UK Government got off the fence and allowed assisted suicide in this country rather than add to these peoples worries by travelling abroad with all the added stress to them and their families.

  • watchin it now with my partner so emotional

  • wow

im watching it now, so sad made me cry like 3 times already.
