Initially this song was written, produced & issued by Jamaican reggae producers Clement Dodd & Willie Williams (also sung by Mr. Williams).

However, it became a bigger hit in the U.S. when it was re-recorded by the rock group "Clash" who also added a lot of improvisational styling & words that were not part of the original reggae. Indeed the Clash version sings the line..."remember to kick it over"...
