Maya doesn't just dance, it's an explosion of spirit, joy and passion. She IS the music and the magic of theater. There will never be another one like her.
To me, this is and will be the ultimate definition of dance. Every movement flows from within. She's not following the choreography. Those steps are born inside her and burst out with great exuberance. She is the music itself!!
Wow, now this is the vivacious energy of Kitri you don't see much nowadays! Techinical precision and athleticism, yes, but with Maya, I get so involved with her character and story telling that comes through in her dancing that I don't care what her feet may look like in some places. When I watch these clips, I wish I have a time machine so I could go back and watch Plisetskaya, Maksimova, Vassilliev, and so many bolshoi stars dance live! They are all treasures of mankind.
This has to be about the best ballet clip ever. Her timing is just perfect, she has sparkle in her technique and she always ends with pzazz and a twinkle. Its just so natural. She has it all.
Energy, fire, character and charm we can compare with Maya only performance of Natalia Osipova, Cynthia Harvey and Katia Maksimova. Others'r very behind.
I have seen many great ballerinas in this role, but nobody like Maya. The excitement and personality that she brings to this role is unique. She has true control of her technique, but she forgets all about technique and dances, she dances like only she can do in this role. Delivering the joy to be a Spanish girl in love and happy for everything. She is fantastic! I do adore her. Thank you Maya for being so brave and giving. This is a great legacy.
Maya is the best in this role to my mind. I would love to see Pierina also dancing it. I think for Maya's style of ballet, Pierina is the only one near her class.
my father was fortunate enough to see maya with the bolshi in the early sixties. as a i child i would dream through the programs from the performance. the image of maya as kitri in the classic kick arabesque is burned into my childhood memory. thank you for a trip down memory lane.
Isn't that incredible?!!! I still can't believe when she does that grand jete arabesque kick!! How about the height she gets? I truly think this is the best I've seen!!(sorry it's been a long time since I've danced and I forgot what they are called)
yep i am not even sure what those kicky thingys are but they are amazing. i am totally inspired to start dancing again. i have forgot how much i love to dance. it's been 30 years since i've put on the toe shoes. i stopped as a teenager because i was into boys. big mistake. i should have kept on dancing............
Ohmigosh, this video is inspiring... I don't think her technique looks bad at all here, and her expression is dazzling. So many ballerinas today could take a lesson from her :)
Every time I someone says that Maya didn't have great technique I remember that scene from Center Stage where Jodie says, "Margot Fonteyn didn't have great feet," and Jonathan responds that when Fonteyn danced you couldn't take your eyes off of her. It can't be taught.
Maya, Margot, Anna and Galina are the probably the best dancers of modern times. There is not much material around for the greats before that like Pierina and Mathilde.
Magnificent!!! So much passion and fire in that dance, no ballerina can dance the way Maya does, she indeed can feel the music, living it like no other dancer does...Simply the best!!!
This has to be one of the best videos on youtube. Maya does not need some phoney title like "assoluta". Her performance says it all, not the title. What she has over other ballerinas is sheer musicality. To me, she is the best ballerina of all time.
Maya has no comparison with any other ballerina ever in Kitri. She was unique, she was and always will be the greatest one, Maximova, Gillem were great, but not assolutas. She got that title after Ms Ulanova retired from stage in the early 70s. She was very careful in selecting her repertoire, she only danced what no one else can dance like her: Dying Swan, Kitri, Raymonda, Swan Lake, but never Giselle There were Alonso, Fracci, Chauvire and Markova for that, Maya never dared. She knew better.
This kind of dancing redefines the term "bravura." Plisetskaya can do more with that fan than most ballerinas can do with their entire bodies. Anybody know who's dancing Basil?
If you watch other dancers do this part, no one else can extend backwards with her back arch and arms like hers. Also her leaps, jumps and extensions are like no one elses. Yes Sylvie Guillem is great and the rest of them, but none of them have what Maya has and thats everything!!!
brew. Quite right. Everything is right about her dancing. She is always in the correct position, her timing is spot on and always at top speed, and she even has time to do a cheeky flick of her head at the end while glacing at the audience. She is the supreme artist, and the people love her for it.
That can´t be tought in any school it is a gift and that makes the difference of a Prima Ballerina Assoluta and a Prima Ballerina

You are right , i absolutely agrre with you , i just wanted to make a point about the magic that Maya had in every role , nowdays you cant see that magic at the stage but as a teacher im triying to rescue this ...
: making art with the body like this legendary ballerina
Thankyou for your reply and i hope you enjoy my videos
What made Plisetskaya such a great dancer was that she learned a LOT about acting skills from watching the equally legendary Galina Ulanova, who was famous for her acting ability on stage (go see Ulanova's legendary performances in "Giselle").
Plisetskaya has talent way and above any dancer around today. Her greatest skill is timing. It's bang on. She is always in the correct position at the correct time, right down to the nano second.
Best Kitri I've ever seen. Everything about her is perfection. She seems to be enjoying herself so much. Dancers actually looked like women then! She's still thin, but not sickly- Don't know why dancers today feel that extreme thinness makes dance look better.
Maya is great. Remember, only one other ballerina was named "Prima Ballerina Assoluta" in the Soviet era....and that was Ulanova. It's obvious why Maya was bestowed with such a title....she was a master!
I agree with 01music01. Maya's techique has GOT to be good. Even if you'd never watched her dance, it's obvious. Because how can a ballerina, literally, still dance when she's nearing her 80s without having almost-perfect technique? (no, there is no "perfect" in ballet, it can always be better, theoretically). And you have to remember that ballet is an ART not a SPORT.
Check out any other ballerina doing precisely this scene, and she will look halfhearted after the blazing Maya Plisetskaya. Except for the sparkling Ekaterina Maximova --but in this scene the Fire Goddess reigns supreme!
I saw both Plisetskaya and Maximova in their NYC tour doing Don Q. Both were marvelous but Vasiliev and Maximova together set that stage on fire. So many years later, I still remember how I felt when I left the old Met and went back for each subsequent performance.(And I agree: that is the true measure of a great performance.) Plisetskaya was great but Maximova was unforgettable.
Who cares about modern standard? It's like Callas or Shaliapin. Probably they did not have perfect voices or modern technique. They were just great artists for all times.
Who will remember ballet stars of nowadays in 5-10 years? Pavlova, Nizhinsky, Ulanova, Plisetskaya. Noureev are forever!
plisetskaya has fire and "kitrism", but what was expected from a dancer those days is different from today. back then it was about what she could do, now its HOW you do it. she was good in the pasts technique. what was thought to be amazing when she danced is not what is thought to be amazing today. her fire and temperamemt and stage presence live today, but not her techinique. it was very good considering the circumstances when she danced. there are, techiniquewise, better kitris.
Good enough is good enough and "the best" is universal for all the times and people. What Plisetskaya did in this dance was perfect regardless of the time. People have the same perception of beauty and it is the same, let it be today or those past days. Up today nobody could dance Kitri or dying swan any better than Plisetskaya.
Raymonda 100 said: When you leave the theatre - you don't remember technique. You remember how the dancer made you feel.
That is the exactly what dance truly is. Thank you, Raymonda. I see dance today, but I can't honestly say I often remember how the dancer made me feel. Maya makes the blood run! That is dance!
Your welcome! I first saw Margot and Rudi in R&J in NY in 1964. That performance - it's passion - is still vivid in my memory, whereas performances I saw months ago I've already forgotten. Can you imagine any dancers today getting 43 curtain calls! And we would have given them another 20 if they would have stayed for them.
i dont count more arched feet better technique...her positions are precise, legs are perfectly straight and her extensions and jumps are gorgeous! maya's charisma made her name ALONG with her incredible talent.
Tonight, somewhere, a performance of Don Quijote will take place. The ballerina dancing Kitri will have a little Maya Plisetskaya in her.Maya owns the role forever.
She looks more like a bacchante than a ballerina--too much frenzy in the dancing. It is all well and good that she has passion and charisma, but they are meant to be conveyed through the medium of dancing, not to compensate for hasty technique.
One must be very incompetent to claim that one of the greatest ballerinas in ballet history does not have a technique. Plisetskaya is world famous both for her incomparable artistry and brilliant technique.
You are begging the question of why she should be one of the greatest in first place, other than a matter of popular reptuation. She is not form-conscious; her steps are unclear; her epaulement is crude, and her interpretation is not musical. There are far better Kitris: Ananiashvili, Alexandrova, Guillem, etc.
If you write something like this means you dont understand anything in ballet. Ananiashvili or Alexandrova are far from Plisetskaya or Bessmertnova of those days.
This is strange. You keep attacking me without offering any substantive evidence to back up your reasons. At least I gave my grounds for skepticism; what yourely on is no more than hearsay or popular reputations. And you can disagree with me without attacking my intelligence. I have yet to do so to you.
Yes, in Don Quixote her technique is freer because that's what the character calls for. You should not dance a spanish peasant with the epaulment and classical placement you would dance a princess. Maya could be classicaly correct when the role called for it (for example in Sleeping Beauty) It is a measure of her artistry that she realises what the role needs.
This is by far the most invigorating, musical and satisfying Kitri I've ever seen.
I don't know if you are a dancer or not, but I don't think you are. Dance is passion, dance is feeling, dance is fire, that is what Plisetskaya is!!!!!!
Guillem for example is good, but the passion when she dances Kitri is not 1/100 of Plisetskaya's. Guillem has flawless technique, but so does Plisetskaya. It's just that it's more ABOUT technique these days.
even techniquewise Plisetskaya is number one and will always be number one in the world. They can only repeat her, there is no way to be better than her.
she does not have technique? What else she was supposed to have done? There is no way to dance better than this. This was perfect. And in terms of technique no one in the world ever could show anything closer to Maya's technique. Soviet ballet school is the best in the world!
The only dancers that come close to the Great Maya today may be Zaharova and Alexandrova,no one else. Not only she was a great dancer but also a great actress a very rare thing in today Ballet World, when techique is all the rage and nothing else.
Maya doesn't just dance, it's an explosion of spirit, joy and passion. She IS the music and the magic of theater. There will never be another one like her.

of the 20th Century. Born in Nov 1925.
At age of 84, she is still teaching and

Best Kitri I've ever seen. Everything about her is perfection. She seems to be enjoying herself so much. Dancers actually looked like women then! She's still thin, but not sickly- Don't know why dancers today feel that extreme thinness makes dance look better.

Great comment. I couldn't agree more.

I wish I was older so I could have seen that live! Amazing! Beats every "new" DonQ version I´ve ever seen!

she's so quick the orchestra can't keep up with her! :)

Except for the sparkling Ekaterina Maximova --but in this scene the Fire Goddess reigns supreme!
shelaghmckenna 5 years ago
Except for Osipova also, I should have added. But no woman, even Maximova or Osipova, has ever quite come up to Plisetskaya's sheer energy level.
shelaghmckenna 4 years ago 3
True - Maya had what Nureyev had - a stage personality and energy that was unique to them.
raymonda100 4 years ago 2
I saw both Plisetskaya and Maximova in their NYC tour doing Don Q. Both were marvelous but Vasiliev and Maximova together set that stage on fire. So many years later, I still remember how I felt when I left the old Met and went back for each subsequent performance.(And I agree: that is the true measure of a great performance.) Plisetskaya was great but Maximova was unforgettable.

see i feel the same way only reversed. plisetskaya has the unforgettable power and feeling in her dancing.

I agree... this is and will always be the best...meravigliosa...she is simply stunning!

Grisi93 5 years ago
Good enough is good enough and "the best" is universal for all the times and people. What Plisetskaya did in this dance was perfect regardless of the time. People have the same perception of beauty and it is the same, let it be today or those past days. Up today nobody could dance Kitri or dying swan any better than Plisetskaya.

When you leave the theatre - you don't remember technique.

And we would have given them another 20 if they would have stayed for them.
raymonda100 4 years ago
Gris93. You are talking complete rubbish. I cannot think of any dancers today who would come anywhere approaching this performance.

ok so i wrote that comment like a year ago and now im like WHAT was i saying?? i disagree with myself hahaha :) shes AMAZING!!!

i dont count more arched feet better technique...her positions are precise, legs are perfectly straight and her extensions and jumps are gorgeous! maya's charisma made her name ALONG with her incredible talent.

Tonight, somewhere, a performance of Don Quijote will take place. The ballerina dancing Kitri will have a little Maya Plisetskaya in her.Maya owns the role forever.
qbendanny1 5 years ago 3
She looks more like a bacchante than a ballerina--too much frenzy in the dancing. It is all well and good that she has passion and charisma, but they are meant to be conveyed through the medium of dancing, not to compensate for hasty technique.
genzano 5 years ago
One must be very incompetent to claim that one of the greatest ballerinas in ballet history does not have a technique. Plisetskaya is world famous both for her incomparable artistry and brilliant technique.
01music01 5 years ago 2
You are begging the question of why she should be one of the greatest in first place, other than a matter of popular reptuation. She is not form-conscious; her steps are unclear; her epaulement is crude, and her interpretation is not musical. There are far better Kitris: Ananiashvili, Alexandrova, Guillem, etc.
genzano 5 years ago
If you write something like this means you dont understand anything in ballet. Ananiashvili or Alexandrova are far from Plisetskaya or Bessmertnova of those days.
arakhachatran 5 years ago
This is strange. You keep attacking me without offering any substantive evidence to back up your reasons. At least I gave my grounds for skepticism; what yourely on is no more than hearsay or popular reputations. And you can disagree with me without attacking my intelligence. I have yet to do so to you.
genzano 5 years ago
I think the objection is that you are focussing on the negative. Look at what makes her unique.
shelaghmckenna 4 years ago
genzano, you totally miss the point.
This is by far the most invigorating, musical and satisfying Kitri I've ever seen.
ondine217 4 years ago 2
I don't know if you are a dancer or not, but I don't think you are. Dance is passion, dance is feeling, dance is fire, that is what Plisetskaya is!!!!!!
Guillem for example is good, but the passion when she dances Kitri is not 1/100 of Plisetskaya's. Guillem has flawless technique, but so does Plisetskaya. It's just that it's more ABOUT technique these days.
MoiMimi46 4 years ago 6
even techniquewise Plisetskaya is number one and will always be number one in the world. They can only repeat her, there is no way to be better than her.
arakhachatran 3 years ago
no one can repeat maya
calbalgal 3 years ago 5
you are obviously entitled to your opnion, but i must say i just dont get how you could say that...
calbalgal 3 years ago
her technique is far from hasty this performance is what every kitri should strive to be
calbalgal 3 years ago
Something is strange with the old-fashioned camera work, as though someone has built in a fast-forward button.
genzano 5 years ago
she does not have technique? What else she was supposed to have done? There is no way to dance better than this. This was perfect. And in terms of technique no one in the world ever could show anything closer to Maya's technique. Soviet ballet school is the best in the world!
arakhachatran 5 years ago 3
Is this Ballet Trocadero??? lol
michaelfraydon 5 years ago
She is so wonderful!! She doesn't have amazing technique, but that isn't what really matters! She has great jumps!
balletmaniac999 5 years ago
The only dancers that come close to the Great Maya today may be Zaharova and Alexandrova,no one else. Not only she was a great dancer but also a great actress a very rare thing in today Ballet World, when techique is all the rage and nothing else.
