How long did it take for Flicka's beak and legs to change to yellow/orange? Bentley is a little over two now and she still has same dark brown/greyish legs an beak. Just curious.
@Elainey2005. Are you retarded? You must be because you think earth worms are not native to the US. Earth worms are native to the WHOLE WORLD dumbass.
Starlings were introduced centuries ago into the US by a man who believed that every animal mentioned in Shakespeare's works should be present in the new world.
With this in mind, I would love to hear a starling be taught to say 'Mortimer'.
@SpottedHyenaStudios I found her when she was a baby. She had fallen from her nest and I couldn't find it or her mother anywhere. She couldn't fly and there were a lot of cats in the area so I took her in.
yes it is a protected bird in the uk ive hand reared a few and released back into wild all trained to find food used to walk em and they would follow got sum funny looks peeps used to think i was mad till the birds flew back in my pocket
I Have A European Starling too.....I rescued 2 after My Cat Killed BOTH Mothers... :/ But One Flew Away And The Other Wouldnt....SO I kept Her And Her Names Yoshi .
Thanks For The Video , I wish Yoshi Would Do That ! All She Does Is do low-note Squaks And Eat ! lol . :-)
I didn`t know there was a parasite problem with earthworms. Is it a US thing? Regardsless, it`s what they feed their young ones in the wild. Earthworms and grubs, in huge quantities. I love sitting in my garden in summer and watch them fly back and forth from the nestboxes I`ve made for them, feeding their ever hungry starlingbabies =)
Aren`t there laws prohibiting people to take starlings or other wild animals in and keeping them as pets? Or are these starlings born in captivity? :-o
Both Starlings and Earthworms are not native to US. I don't know about the parasite but my starlings don't care for earthworms very much. They'd rather have a cricket or a spider. It is legal to have starlings in the US because they are exempt from the Migratory Bird Act, being non-native. But it's against federal law to have native stuff like Robins. I dunno what's legal in their hometown (Europe).
thats amazing, i just read an article talking about how most of these birds today are supposed to be males but are being born as females, and recent studies show that because of the earthworms that crawl around sewage plants get hormones and which the baby bird eats, and effecting only males allows them to sing more complex songs and remember longer songs.
Starlings should never be fed earthworms. Earthworms carry a parasite that will eventually strangle the bird, only Robins are resistant. The birds here have usually been in captivity their entire lives and are 'human imprinted'.Males and females will both talk if they are properly cared for.The sudden flood of talking Starlings online is not due to endocrine disruptors via polluted earthworms,it's because people are becoming once again enlightened as to their intelligence.Even Mozart had one!
I have struggled to save a number of baby birds that well meaning people have mistakenly fed earthworms. If they only knew softened chicken based dog/cat food or turkey chick crumbles with boiled egg and natural apple sauce was way better for 'em... much less gross than earthworms too! lol
By any chance, can she talk. You know like a parrot or a crow.

Good to know! are this parasites endemic in both America and Europe? I thought birds like blackbirds ate earthworms in nature.
