the only problem with this video is the background music... whaaaa!!! not necessary. and dusturbing. I like the book. I bought the pdf version. highly reccommendable.
Thanks Ian for such a wonderful book. I'm not quite finished with it yet. I'm just starting Chapter 4 "Shaping Up Using CSS." It is a lot of fun to progress through this book and see how the sample website keeps looking cleaner and cleaner. I was not entirely new to HTML & CSS mind you. I did learn some of this many years ago, but I have forgotten a lot of it. So it's nice to have a clean restart with such a great book. I hope there will be a sequel! Thanks again.
I've only ever used FrontPage to build my websites.... I want to get into HTML and CSS. Ive tried before but get lost and very frustrated along the way. I watched your video, read some feedback and thought Id give your book a go. I've just ordered your latest book from Amazon, I hope it lives up to all you say!
the whole reason i cant learn HTML and CSS is because they put all this stupid shit in between the learning process, like where to find the notepad editor..wtf??? im trying to learn how to build a website, not opperate windows. i dont think I would venture into web development if I didnt know how to find notepad. Seriously...these tutorials are getting on my nerves, they need to cut out all the bullshit friendly crap and just teach me what I want to learn.
This book is for absolute beginners and some people don't know what the hell a text editor is, let alone where to find it. That's not you, but it is a lot of people.
That said, there's an easy answer - skip over the first chapter. Chapter 2 continues right where *you* want it to.
No single tutorial or book can be perfect for you *and* also be perfect for your mum/cousin/uncle/whatever.
I apologize for lashing out like that, its just frustrating, ive been looking up all day long and I couldn't find anything that fits how I learn, ill give your book a try though. Can you buy it at book stores like walden books?
You should be able to. I've not heard of Walden books before, but it is distributed in the US by O'Reilly, so if you can get O'Reilly books there, you should be able to pick up a copy in that store. Then you can have a proper flick through and decide if it's what you are after :)
Yes Ian, you hit the nail on the head. Avallo Creative and Web Development (me) hired a graphic designer but needed a graphic designer slash web designer. Instead of hiring someone straight out of college, we decided to experiment and handed her your book. A week later she was laying out websites the right way, with no prior knowledge. I was amazed at how fast she absorbed the material. I am very pleased with this book and as far as Im concerned it is the only way to get into the field.
I LOVED this book. I've got the first edition of it, and I'm still using it to rebuild my own site. I've had books that only used HTML, an after using one of those to build my site, I picked up this book and found it to be fun, and awesome. The writing is easy to read (And fun to, I read it on my commute!) I did have a hard time actually getting my own CSS working, but after working with the book and kicking it around, it finally worked! So proud! I'd DEF buy another book by Ian Lloyd.
I was a completely beginner in web page design and I bought the first edition of the book because I failed my assignment last year at university. When I finished studying it, I built a very good looking and correct web site. Think that my failed mark was 6% and when I resubmitted my assignment during resits I got a mark of 60%! The book is brilliant, simple and detailed. God bless the writer! 2 our Professor@uni: How can you ask from beginners to build a web site in Linux using Quanta Plus?!WTF
