However, Spanish does have multiple dialects, like Castilian. Castilian is commonly regarded (at least in North and South America) as Spanish or Español -- during the Spanish Empire, only one dialect was supported in the New World. Different dialects of Spanish are commonly only spoken within Spain.

Original Hispanics: Spain and Portugal. aka hispania which was their ancient latin name.

Original Latinos: Lazio, Italy

So saying you're half hispanic and half white is stupid. Most mexicans are mestizo and ameri-indian, while most Puerto Ricans are white, mulatto, and black.

So in the end the census almost had it right, but they went political correct and didn't have the balls to have mestizo and mulatto choices.

Hispanic means you are of a Spanish-speaking origin. And you would mark white if you have no Spanish or Spanish-American blood at all(like I did).

But I think it's strange that by demographic, Spain is the only European country that has its own racial group of sorts. All other European nations/ethnicities(and they are many) are considered caucasians. Spain is the only nation to reach out to the Central and South Americans and taught them their language, besides Portugal w/ Brazil.

The Census, unbelievable as it might sound, used to be much worse. Mother served in the U.S. Army 40 years ago and back then, Hispanics were considered "White" when listed on the Census. The main reason you don't hear of Latinos from most American history is not because they didn't exist, but because they weren't counted.

Really though, the way we categorized people for most of the 20th century and prior was based on some fairly bullshit concepts, and this is just the latest effort to unravel them into something resembling sense. Since these groupings are all self-identified and not apparent (such as a biracial person who appears either obviously white or obviously black), it's more about cultural/social groups.

Look up where the Caucasus range is. Continent doesn't equal race, race doesn't equal ethnicity, and ethnicity doesn't equal nationality. You mix them all up and yell about it for five minutes.

Spaniards are grouped with other Hispanic groups because they have both a similar language and cultures that are closer in degree than random. As most Spaniards are white, their race and ethnicity are separate - similarly, most Mexicans are mestizos, and might check multiple race boxes.

Almost all of Central and South America share Roman Catholicism with Spain, share language with them (except Brazil), share some other cultural aspects with them (architecture) and are related. There simply is no massive Mayan influence
