It's mainly americans who have that problem, but like you said, I know many americans who can make the distinction. I'd have to say Aussies would be able to tell the difference as our own accent is so different from around the world include british and american, although not so much canadian.

It seems every one of her projects requires a different accent: American for In Treatment, Polish in Defiance, British for Alice in Wonderland, and her early roles were in Australian.. No idea how she fared with the others since I've only seen Mia on In Treatment but her American accent was nearly flawless, I was surprised to find out afterwards that she was from Australia.
