The gulls around where I live have been really squawky lately..You know when they put their heads down and really get into the squawking...lol..even when I'm feeding them..Fascinating birds..One, a younger one I believe, had black string tangled around its legs and had to hobble around. I felt sorry for it but it wouldn't let me help ....Almost every day they sit outside of my residence and I come out and visit them. None of my neighbours want me feeding them so I shush them a lot when I do....
@jmjulebran - Hehe... I can just see you telling the gulls to squawk *just* a little quieter - :) That's one of their dominance routines where they lower their heads and reeeeeeally squawk at the other ones - maybe it's mating season for the gulls lately? Sorry to hear about the one with the string around it's legs - we had one around here like that almost a decade ago and it didn't let us help it either :(
@taburineagle Hi.I must sound really eccentric..lol..I love animals and some people don't like seagulls...I don't care, as I do...I am happy I have found fellow seagull enthusiasts like you..Seagulls and animals are the best! Thanks for the vids. I am going to get a phone that makes videos and I have some pics of seagulls on my cellphone, but need to get them onto my computer..I am working on it..Take Care..Have a great day...
Why do you think feeding them bread is bad? The gulls here in Seattle eat bread and everything., and still look and fly powerfully. It has to do with the digestive enzymes a gull can apply to swallowed food. A gull, I believe, can get exellent nutrition many sources a human could never harvest.
@mariojragucci2 - I'm not sure if it's really "bad", but there are things that are more nutritious for them other than bread. I've heard that from quite a few people (that bread is a more detrimental thing to feed them), but I haven't seen any real studies on it... Ideally they'd just be eating fish...
@taburineagle I am so sad today. I videoed the gulls here in Seattle totally ripping open a refuse bag in an alley. These are huge and powerful gulls here that can peck through a plastic bag. I was so excited to set up the camera and get some good fottage...when I got home I deleted the files by accident during the conversion. I'll try again tomorrow :-(
@mariojragucci2 - Aww!! That sucks! :( I've done that before too, it's one of those slapping-yourself-on-the-head moments. I would love to see that, it's awesome watching gulls rip into things! Hopefully you do have another chance to catch that!
This is an excellent video of gulls that must be around or near the gull coast. Why do you present to them dry pet food? The gulls really prefer fish carcuss. They will accept the dry pet food, but at least offer to them the food they prefer, again, which is fish carcuss.
@mariojragucci2 - You know, that's an extremely good question - I actually have tried on a few occasions to give the gulls fish carcass (tilapia mainly), and they won't even peck at it - they can't stand it... my guess is they've become so accustomed to "people food" they're more or less only looking for it... it's kind of sad, actually. I asked an extremely enthusiastic gull feeder a few years ago for the closest nutritional thing I could feed and she told me dog food - that's why I use it...
@taburineagle I agree with you how humans have changed these gull's eatting preferences. Humans offers gulls a bounty of food. Perhaps the gulls you encountered with the tilapia were totally "domesticated" in the sense they live only off humans.. Laughing gulls are excellent scavengers and preditors, although poorly adapted to the preditor role. They have no natural predators either. I've only seen once before a gull eating petfood. The human interaction to me is interesting.
@mariojragucci2 - I've seen gulls act as predators too, but usually only in nature documentaries - the ones near here are way too used to human food to eat their natural prey - :( I'm not really sure why dog food was suggested to me, but I know bread isn't good for them, so I wanted something that would at least be somewhat nutritious for them... if they're going to eat "people" food they might as well be eating nutritious food! :)
@taburineagle Hi, how are you..Today I fed a seagull near my place--they recognize me now..really-- lol..and come to see me...I fed one seagull sardines..I don't know where the other ones who used to come around went..I know they're around as I see them flying--Do seagulls migrate south for the winter? It's getting cold here in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada..Oshawa is along Lake Ontario...
Either you chose a really empty parking lot away from a lot of traffic noises, or you have had some fantastic audio equipment! The squawks from the gulls were very clear and layered. Awesome!
@Flightily - Thank you! The parking lot isn't that far away from traffic, but I was close enough to them that the mic registered the sound pretty well! It is a pretty good mic, but it helps to have vocal birds too - :)
Hey great shots Taburin I love seagulls! I like the low to the ground shooting. I feed mine on the beach for the past 5 years, they all have diverse personalities if you take the time to look at each one. Thanks again....
You're welcome! Yep, each gull has a separate personality, and even a separate sounding squawk if you listen closely! They're very cool birds, I wanted to capture a more gull's-eye view on the ground, that's why I did the ground shots. I have an entire year's worth of gull footage I should edit into something (it's a few years old, but I believe this and the "Gull Mat Project" are the only clips from the entire year I released)... maybe I'll re-capture that and try to work with that some time!
Great video. I like gulls, especially herring gulls - they often sound as if they're laughing. Many people don't seem to like them which is a shame, they seem like really opportunistic birds and have a lot of character about them.
I heard recently that here in the UK herring gulls are now on the red list as their numbers have dropped considerably over the last few decades :(
Thank you! I love "upshots" of the gulls - you've got to get on the ground and shoot towards the sky, but it captures a view of gulls that few see. The "small round thingys" are dog food actually! I asked someone who was obsessed with gulls what the most healthy thing to feed them would be, and that's what she replied! I'm not entirely sure if that's true, but I would think it's better than french fries - :)
Thank you! Oh yeah? That's cool to see how birds react to other birds - :) I wonder how (or if) the gulls would react to the sound of a cockatiel screaming?
Probably look at each other as if to say"what was that?"or take off running for safety?LOL!The only reason why I think my one Teil reacts so crazily is because he was lost for almost a year outside.I have a Movie called Winged Migration I play for my Birds, and I had to stop for a bit because it was scaring the previously lost Birdy,Wind. He's ok with it now,and sort of looks around, like,"where are they?"LOL!If you conduct any experiments, let me know what the gulls do with a Cockateil sound!
Sure! Hehe... if the gulls shut up long enough to hear the cockateil sound! :) Our gulls don't come back for quite a while now, actually - not for another 5 months or so, but I might have a chance to try that out... hehe - if I remember to - :)
Well... I've been doing gull video and photo shoots for the past 10 years, I've been out in the middle of flocks of 1,000s of gulls maaaany times and I've *never* been crapped on... hehe... the car though, that's a different story! :)
Thanks! You're welcome, I'm glad you like it! Our gulls are always squawking about something - we have very few that just keep their beak shut and mingle - :)
It does! I love the sounds that gulls make - some people think it's just an annoying scream, but I find it very interesting! This gull sounded unlike any other I've taped in the last 8 years... like it had a cold - :)
I love the sound of herring gulls too- it reminds me of being back home in England. I live in Germany now and it's mainly little black headed ones here at the lake. They're ok but not as impressive as the big ones!!
Me too! It's amazing the differences of different areas of gulls! I rarely ever see Herring Gulls - but every year for the past few, I've been setting up gull video shoots on Christmas day, and for some reason, that day always brings them out! I don't see them any other time of the year, they're very reclusive in this area! I shot a new "Christmastime" gull video last week actually - I hope to release that soon, I'm working on finagling with the picture-in-picture effect of 2 cams... :)
Ah.. thanks for the reminder! I shot a little video on my new camera at the weekend of a seagull doing the stomp dance routine in a puddle by the side of a busy Marina. There was only the one seagull doing it as others looked on seemingly bewildered *lol* so I think I'll upload that while I remember :-D
Awesome - thanks for sharing that! :) Ah, I haven't done a good gull video in years... they've been around (in less numbers) this year, but I haven't had the chance to tape them yet!
there so adorable

I'm not sure - cat food has more protein in it, and I *know* that it's not good for raccoons... It may be OK for gulls, but I'm not sure...
