PS am also into Ghost in the Shell, Urutsukidoji (spelling?), Vampire Hunter if anyone can think of simmilar series, I'm sure others are interested too! Texhnolyze sounds interesting, will check it out.
This anime is extremely dark, twisted and violent, it is an awesome Samurai tale, slow paced with uber violence and has a real class to its animation style - I love it personally. Recommended if you like your cereberal/hard anime, not cutesy or jovial in the slightest..
ahhhh....the sex scene bit just threw me off. plus being a girl makes me decline to this sort of gruesome anime and its not like ill watch hello kitty either. but thank you for the warning and great review
You haven't reviewed enough anime then, good sir -- in regards to the Japanese stuff. =3 A playful jest, that is all. I look forward to watching it; your review was helpful in making my decision. Thank you. ^_^
Great review, I think I'll check this out. ^^ One crit, though it's a technical one.
3:31 - "This is a samurai story set in ancient Japan"
This doesn't work for me. I just read the story is set in 1629, and I learned the rise of the samurai to power wasn't until around 1200. I would not want to call that "ancient". I would rather say "feudal Japan", and maybe "classical", though the latter would be better for around Heian period. (approx. 800-1200AD).
I read the comments that people posted on ANN, describing the contents in series to be very severe, as many acts that are committed in show are holocaust-like, and pretty much one of the sickest things that I hear.
Shigurui is awesome... so deliciously dysfunctional. I definitely can understand why some people find the pace annoying, but the manga has none of those problems if that bothers you. The manga, which still runs until today, is drawn by the guy who did Apocalypse Zero (but written by a competent storyteller). The art is so hyper-detailed it's insane.
I did not like Shigurui: Death Frenzy. I gave up on the series after the second episodes. I did not have a problem with the blood, style or characters. The problem I have with the series is the pacing, it was too slow for my liking. I didn't have a problem with the Japanese aspect like names, culture, mythology, etc. The problem with me is simple, pacing! It's very hard for me to watch a series that is slowly paced.
There is a read the manga ending. And By that I mean. You never end with that fight at the beginning or reach that point again. I would of liked the show a lot. And given it a 5/5, until the end.

Looks neat, but samurai anime's don't usually appeal to me. Maybe I'll watch it when I get some spare time or something.
But good review, anyways!
