when you're 20, you write about 20 year old things. when you mature, your music and lyrics will likewise. unless you're an asshole which Mr. Mellencamp is not. he still rocks and still writes the BEST songs, he just writes about more mature things now.
Huge fan since he was little Johnny Cougar, 1980. Chestnut Street Incident, etc. However, I must say this song and his recent CD just isn't what it used to be. Theres no "Scarecrow" or "Crumblin' Down" or "Paper in Fire" on LDL&F.
It isn't just JCM that's lost the writing edge - It seems rock is for the young. They just lose their ability to write good tunes with age. I certainly can't write songs like when I was 20! Thx anyway, JCM. I'm glad ur still rockin'. "A" for effort.
thx 4 posting!!!..i have this album on my itunes...i LOVE IT!!!...some ppl say its dark.....lol!!! ppl who don't know great music!!...just open up your heart and ears and LISTEN!!, JOHN MELLENCAMP LIVES!!!:)
ive never heard this kind of music before but when i first heard this song i feel in love with it...and i understand it very well..he did a good job with this song.. i really like it
Don't be dimantled and rattled up too much over the video. It correlates various emotions of love with the song. It is a well made video to those who understand the meaning of it.
Each image is so brilliant that I want to watch this slowed down so I can really see each one - that is Woody Guthrie isn't it? Oh, also great song and one of the best CD's ever.
All you people on this comment list cuzzin' and making no sense - grow up. Channel your anger and pain into something constructive.
The strumming and beat patterns that sound familar is known as "Tejano" or what we call "texmex". A country sound originated by mexican texans. A flavor heard by the Everly's, Buddy Holly, Bobby Fuller, Ritchie Valens, Los Lobo's, etc. Peggy Sue & I Fought the Law being my favorites. Wouldn't be surprised if T Bone didn't write a lot of this music. The work he's done with Roy Orbison and Elvis Costello...brilliant! Check it out if you really want to hear his art.

See cougar's website? It's like a marketing enterprise! Structured for selling americanism, targeting those poor bastards that don't know better. This is why his colleagues not only laugh at him but at the fools that buy into it.
No offence but .... just wondering what crawled up your butt and died. Sounds like you're pretty angry at someone/something and instead of dealing with your issue this is how you are dealing with, my guess, a relationship gone bad. Get over it as nothing can change the past; life is too short and you might surprise yourself that the the next time you listen to this song, you might hear what others are hearing, a really nice love song.
Actually I'm quite content. I have had personal issues with the cougar and like most who have to deal with him personally. We have nothing good to say. So I'm just joining in on the fun. If you heard what other colleagues were saying, my remarks wouldn't bring you to the assertions and psychoanalysis. In fact you wouldnt think of insulting me at all you'd be joining in! Ironic what a set of blinders can do to the ones out of touch. Glad you enjoy his stuff and hopefully for him..buying as well!
No Offence ninelives19..but bon jovi, poison, and mellonhead? It sounds like you're the angry one. Spent the last 30 years escaping your troubles glued to the MTV screen? (which of us has our head up our ass?)It looks as though you've missed out on reality! Been spoon fed all the shit music MTV feeds ya! Where's the quiet riot and twisted sister? where's the motley crue? Pathetic no doubt. I can have my 16 year old email you some reality if you'd like. Without a doubt she could enlighten you.
ninelives!!! I just saw the motley crue on your second page!!! I knew it!!! It's totally cool though, I'm actually kind of used to it. There's 3 downers that work in the studio next door and for their sake...we all pretend we like shit-metal here. Plus I used to bang a lot of those big haired-metal heads back in my glory days. Although quite dim and shit for taste...they gave great head no doubt! Take care sis and no offence or hard feelings I hope.
That's really creative mihal! Such an economy with words! I anticipate your next colorful syllable with great eagerness! The type that takes things personal I see? I suggest the next time you get personal...you make an effort to stay in your own weight class. I wipe the floor with pea-brains like you. I normally call upon my 12 year old to handle my lightweights for me. Even he can come up with better than "you're (not your) really gay". :)
Spoken like an imbecile and a hypocrite. Did I make any personal remarks? Yet you insult me? Great, I got a fucking baby with shit for brains pulling on my dick! Go back to school shit for brains and learn about music and what it takes to be a decent human being. Insulting someone with double your intelligence quotient...you're insane.
I guess you can call the entertainment capital of the world (LA) the shithole of the earth. But most people will disagree. One thing most people will agree on is that by reading your comments, most people will concur that you truly do have shit for brains. Like the dcoy, I feel sorry for you, ya poor bastard.
There's something in this music that has been missing for a while in his albums. I think he found it again, and I feel this album, if this song is any indication of the quality that awaits us all, will probably be considered far and above his best.
Hell, this song is probably the best love song he's ever written.
I've heard a few of the new songs and believe this will be Mellencamp's best album and music since Human Wheels. I just hope the songs make it to radio and people find the album at Starbucks.

Is this video collage something that cougar put together or a fan? It looks cougar because he's incorporated a lot of blacks, Guthrie, and religion in it in order to sell fans his bullshit bogus american image. If it is fact mellonhead work...shame on you john you cheap-ass charlatan. Why fools buy into this insipid monkey just flat out baffles me. It's like you're all wearing horse blinders and ear visors.

Kudos John for another great body of work, from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
Love the video and the song. Two sided meanings with an Everly Brothers sound. John hits the nail on the head again. Great job! That's why he's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Just like you >The first time I heard it I thought that sounds just like an Everly Brothers riff exactly...reminiscent of by gone days. John sure channels the collective music of the past with current commentary. I was glad to hear a love song for a change! This world needs more love and tolerance to balance out the negative ...I won't be attending his concert in Berkeley, Ca 8/2/08 but I sure can be there in spirit.
I don't think he intended to tap into that retro sound, but with the great T-Bone Burnett producing, it just surfaced that way.
Would be nice if cougar teamed up with David St. Hubbins & Nigel Tufnel for a project. With T-Bone producing...I'd buy that CD as soon as it hit the stores!
