It's really interesting to look back at this after seeing V for Vendetta and watch how much the Wachowski Brothers have changed. The Matrix was brilliant, but the plots have gotten so much thicker. Its seems rather unfair to me that all these guards get killed. After all, aren't the guards also just doing what they are programmed to do by the matrix? Surely they are also actually in their own little embryonic pods, covered in red goo, just waiting to be released and choose a pill? But no. They don't get the chance to find the truth like Neo did. They get killed instead. Not sure Descartes ever envisioned that when he wrote it.
