To all the whiners. We get it, your computer rocks. However, some of us DUAL BOOT operating systems to perform different tasks. If I want to produce music/play newgen games/get a full computing experience, yeah, i'll use windows or osx. Sometimes I just want to check facebook (don't we all?) and maybe i don't have a data plan on my phone. A quick booting cloud operating system is preferable in those situations, they're free, and your argument is invalid, stfu.
What the FUCK is this? an operating system that cannot be used offline? And of course all the information that Google gets from me online is part of their ToS, correct?

these types of cloud operating systems with just a browser are a fail IMO. What if you cannot find wifi or don't have 3g? You cannot do anything with the computer. Jolicloud is still my favorite since it gives you real applications that can run outside the cloud aswell as cloud applications which I really like a lot and it has great boot time

I'm not sure I like the idea of being stuck in a browser. Depends on the user I guess. It would definitely be popular for most people. Especially with the social networking junkies. Then again, I'm sure Google has a lot of plans for this. Might be really cool. Lets just wait and see what happens.

I could see dual booting this next to a full version of Windows, but no way in hell would I pay more than $20 on a netbook that has ONLY this on it. I mean, what a waste. Why spend even $200 on it when you can buy a netbook or iPod Touch or PDA (lol, PDAs are so 90s) that does all of this and more?
Chrome os is one step in the right direction. Cloud computing is the future. Its kinda crap to update your system at home again and again. Imagine how much power could be saved if everyone would have low budget laptops with low energy consumption and play the newest games, edit vids or just run 20 programs at once. Gogogo evolution!!
The idea is you have this on your pc. So you can turn it on, and quickly check email and browse the web. If you want to do more, you can then boot into windows or other OS from it. I believe an asus machine already has a similiar system in place, it boots into the os in a couple of seconds ready to browse.

It's just probably a Windows System with edited boot image (the cloud). And all startup items taken out but Chrome browser and a dock. The dock is probably Rocketdock with a theme. The volume/battery/time can be easily edited with CSS or simply make a whole new page overall. He hovered over the close button that's hidden by the preview sign, and that gave away it's Vista or 7.
Seems as if this is mixed with an SSO, IWA, LDAP possibly.... Interesting.... Looks like its Linux based version of IIS... Wonder what their doing with their servers?
Ubuntu is good for the easy tasks. For bigger tasks you either need Windows or Mac. That's why Ubuntu will not rule. Google OS might rule because Google has a lot of money.

Debian for me, ubuntu is based on debian, deebian is alot more stable and allows you to do more. Ubuntu has been more famous because its more user friendly, which is not bad. Either way Ubuntu is definitely better than Windows. the only benefit windows has is support, other than that, FAIL.
Mac osx folk won't budge, i dont see windows users on it, Linux users will just laugh at it, so when it comes out on shelves at toys r us in 2010 let's all format our pc's, delete all our personal documents and try it out...

There is some very good competition out there, but nothing that is designed for netbook users. This is fast, free and unlike linux, easy to use. No netbook user would pay for Windows or Apple when they could get this. I agree it won't take off for desktop PCs, but they will completely revolusionise the, albeit small, netbook market. It's a two horse race now between gOS and Google.
Of course it's easy to use, it's just a browser, which boots up, lol. As a stand-alone OS no chance to take off, not even on netbooks. Even netbooks have medium configurations. Why would I spend $300 for a netbook (160 Gb HDD, Card Reader, etc.) if I can't even store a personal file on that? Nor could I watch a movie, only on youtube.
Given the thousands who tried to download it yesterday even though it was a hoax, shows there's a lot of people who want it. Besides you can probably watch a film on it by uploading it onto your GMail space and viewing it with Picasa Photo and Video Viewer. I can't think of any everyday thing that can't be done in the cloud
Now that I have ChromeOS I feel in a better position to give a better reply. Turns out you can store and watch movies on it after all with GDocs, and play them with chrome's native media client. And they say the Google netbook is going to have GPS and multitouch. Looks like your computer is the one lacking functionality now!

Its actually linux not XP which is slow,I have tried many linux distros on my old 256 mb laptop none of them work great even with a slim down xfce or lxde but XP runs like a charm.
This seems to be distributions' fault, they seem to be pretty blind to the needs of weak computer users. Many years ago i had used a Frugalware with KDE 3.3.x on a netbook-style JVC laptop with 600MHz CPU, slow SIS chipset and 128MB RAM, and it ran quite good, better than XP SP2. Built my own kernel though. A few other distros i tried were slow.
It seems Adobe Flash can hog my whole 1GB of RAM alone on Linux nowadays, among things to consider, all kinds of other things may have worsened since.
I want this so bad!

Debian for me, ubuntu is based on debian, deebian is alot more stable and allows you to do more. Ubuntu has been more famous because its more user friendly, which is not bad. Either way Ubuntu is definitely better than Windows. the only benefit windows has is support, other than that, FAIL.

don't think it will be too successful, maybe computer illiterate people who don't want to fork out the money to pay for windows or osx.
too basic to have as a main operating system.
may be worth replacing my ubuntu with if I ever want to boot quickly as I never use ubuntu.

Mac osx folk won't budge, i dont see windows users on it, Linux users will just laugh at it, so when it comes out on shelves at toys r us in 2010 let's all format our pc's, delete all our personal documents and try it out...

Who cares what u drank? i dont see the google chrome OS to take off, cuz u may kno betta then i do that there is a good competition out there. like windows, apple and linux. i dont see the future behind a cloud based OS. Its reality. Ppl are exited cuz its a new thing. I am also exited to see a web-based OS but i also see no future behind it.

There is some very good competition out there, but nothing that is designed for netbook users. This is fast, free and unlike linux, easy to use. No netbook user would pay for Windows or Apple when they could get this. I agree it won't take off for desktop PCs, but they will completely revolusionise the, albeit small, netbook market. It's a two horse race now between gOS and Google.

Of course it's easy to use, it's just a browser, which boots up, lol. As a stand-alone OS no chance to take off, not even on netbooks. Even netbooks have medium configurations. Why would I spend $300 for a netbook (160 Gb HDD, Card Reader, etc.) if I can't even store a personal file on that? Nor could I watch a movie, only on youtube.

Given the thousands who tried to download it yesterday even though it was a hoax, shows there's a lot of people who want it. Besides you can probably watch a film on it by uploading it onto your GMail space and viewing it with Picasa Photo and Video Viewer. I can't think of any everyday thing that can't be done in the cloud

Now that I have ChromeOS I feel in a better position to give a better reply. Turns out you can store and watch movies on it after all with GDocs, and play them with chrome's native media client. And they say the Google netbook is going to have GPS and multitouch. Looks like your computer is the one lacking functionality now!

Its actually linux not XP which is slow,I have tried many linux distros on my old 256 mb laptop none of them work great even with a slim down xfce or lxde but XP runs like a charm.

This seems to be distributions' fault, they seem to be pretty blind to the needs of weak computer users. Many years ago i had used a Frugalware with KDE 3.3.x on a netbook-style JVC laptop with 600MHz CPU, slow SIS chipset and 128MB RAM, and it ran quite good, better than XP SP2. Built my own kernel though. A few other distros i tried were slow.
It seems Adobe Flash can hog my whole 1GB of RAM alone on Linux nowadays, among things to consider, all kinds of other things may have worsened since.

except that you compare xp from 2001 with linux distro's from 2009, and xp was released when computers had 64 mb of ram as normal memory
