  • Too bad the San today don't live like this at all. They are farmers, and only put on the skins for tourists. They wouldn't have become farmers if the fucking brits hadn't taken so much of their land.

But they are a different people now, and I only wish them the best as they enter the broader world economy.

  • amazing video thanks for posting

  • @kaos3124 hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • absolutelly amazing video, the Bushmen are the oldest race in world!!

  • how does he get it back to camp????

  • as a distance runner, this is awe inspiring to me, much respect oto the kalahari and the kudu

  • Not sure why the uploader chose to make fun of American southerners, as if they are the only people on the planet to hunt with scoped rifles...

  • why was he wearing shoes? I would think shoes would fuck up his running technique.

  • @HariVIyer I belive, he chased it all the way but stopped a few times to track its direction as needed. The others probably followed at a mich slower pace and helped carry the kill back, because they weren't tired from running. As for nourishment he was carrying water on him.

  • Were they tracking the bull or 8 hours? Or was the runner actually chasing the bull for 8 hours?

Either way it's impressive...but running for 8 hours without some form of nourishment seems impossible...even for a seasoned distance runner.

  • @HariVIyer a seasoned distance runner cant compare to these guys.

  • @mojomatt176 I just realized it's actually because they are jogging and taking a lot of breaks - As a marathon runner I can tell you that a 3 hour run is very different from an 8 hour jog/walk.

Still have mad respect for them...but the human would collapse just like the Cudu unless he either replenishes his muscle glycogen, or burns it at a much slower rate by jogging slowly instead of running.

  • @HariVIyer I don't believe the human would collapse as quickly as the cudu, if at all, because of the quadruped argument. Quadrupeds can't breath while galloping, as opposed to humans, who can breath whether we're jogging or at top speed. A huge advantage for us. In essence, the cudu dies because of oxygen deprivation.

  • @HariVIyer An interesting read would be "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall. He talks about the Tarahumara Indians who could run far longer than modern distance runners...barefoot.

  • @mojomatt176 Interesting read on wikpedia - although there are modern distance runners who run hundreds of miles in a single race - look up Yiannis Kouros and other ultramarathon runners. Still, both Trahumara Indians and ultramarathon runners have to refuel...or they would literally violate the laws of physics.

  • @HariVIyer Very true. Well, happy running!:)

  • I really want to get that guy a pair of spikes

  • the most efficient way to carry water is under your arm.

  • No stretching, no Gatorade. NO BULLSHIT!

  • 4-5 years later and this still amazes me. I'm going bow hunting with a self-bow I made myself for the first time, but even that I had a lot of help with modern conveniences. And I think THAT is hard.

  • Who was the camera man that ran with him? most impressive!

  • Amazing!!! I'm glad that we have McDonalds, Burger King, Carls Jr., and/or Wendy's that have their own bushmen to kill our food. Otherwise myself and every other lazy-ass American would starve to death!

  • anth 111 smh

  • I doubt you could hunt horses this way.

  • I have actually hunted this way. But i killed my prey with a handgun. It is exhausting, believe me ;)

  • @YOPAJAG Cool story bro.

  • That last part was kinda cold... He killed it as it collapsed from exghaustin! It felt sad...

I mean, I'm all for hunting, I just don't look my kill in the eye whilst killing it.

  • @nachoskater44 You, my friend, are a coward.

  • @nachoskater44 I think not looking your prey in the eye while you kill it is cowardly. You dishonor the spirit of the animal by disrespecting it in such a way. If you are going to take his life, at least have the courage to also look him in the eye as you do it.

  • i feel insufficient now.

  • Humans really are amazing. No cheetah is going to be able to finish a marathon.

  • and then he carries the 200kg animal for 80km back to his village?

    What.

  • @TheCrankydragon a) his mates follow him. b) the animal doesn't run away in a straight line, it changes tack. so he's much closer to camp than you'd be if you ran straight away from it for hours.

  • stumble!

  • 8 hours huh? Not your typical 9-5

  • 50 cent's grandfather

  • this is true hunting for sure, would you agree, the rifle stuff is too unreal

  • Just imagine their sexual stamina!

  • @timmytims100 I always wonder what people mean by that. You mean like you are too out of shape to be able to bone enough?

  • This is a clip from the BBCs series The Life of Mammals, episode 10: Food for Thought.

I've loved this video for years, and just now figured out where it came from, thanks to a friend remembering my enthusiastic babbling about the subject and running across the show.

I definitely recommend watching the rest of the series.

  • in soviet russia, kudu hunt you!

  • I feel sad for the animals :(

  • @Max261193 which ones? since humans are animals as well...

  • Wow ultimately the we can do whatever we put our minds to this is an amazing video..if you really want something in life go an get it.

  • this should be shown to homeless men, so that they understand they don't have to go hungry.

  • Dam that's pretty tight Berry impressive

  • Why don't they just pick up some Mcdonalds?

  • @callscott1 Jealousy is not an appealing trait.

  • humans don't need meat to survive- vegan

  • @albertescamilla True, but only if there is plenty of food. It's not all that easy to find food in the desert, unless you prefer grazing on tall grass and dead trees. Meat is the only food available, and you don't need much to keep you going.

  • @albertescamilla Thats not true actually. Biologically we can sure, but environmentally, economically? Nope. Crops require good soil, and flat land to grow well. In large amounts of the world that land doesn't exist in big enough quantities to feed the people and only utilising the rest of the land that has thin top soil, infertile soil, or that is hilly (or a combination) can countries create enough food - the UK is a prime example.

  • @albertescamilla part 2: That is not say there are not places with vast amounts of flat, good land. America has it and Africa has it as well. But to shut down all the farms that utilise land that can only grow grass and feed animals and open up crop farms in these few places means having to transport vast amounts of food all over he world creating insane levels of pollution. Also don't forget crops need specific weather, take Scotland and Canada for example.. where are they going to grow crops?

  • "Cororeh" drew the short straw lmao

  • So now he's gotta carry that fucking thing all the way back to his village?? Damn.

  • ...@WXKFA Track-hunting's a bitch sometimes. I can't hunt anymore due to illness.

However, when I did- I ambush-hunted... then tracked- If I had to, that is. This fellow- IS master of his...er, 'Game'...

Yeah, 6+ billion and counting to feed. I'm just pissed @ the liberal minded(USA) as it's always bitchin', preventin' & politics w/'em and seldom, if ever, offering anything practical, constructive and do-able. Just, bitch, bitch, bitch! And when they get 2b in charge; Lectures powergrabs & BS.

  • WOW! He chased for 8 hours!!!! God bless! i would have given up in 5 minutes and decided that we would have to eat roots and berries!

  • This is breathtaking. I cried a little.

  • ....modern world? Waxing poetic, the misguided liberal is cast aside by evolution as unfit 2 survive- being totally unrealistic & lacking in practical thinking due 2 actually believing the false teachings conjured-up by teachers & others who are guided by the sure-poison of mans' politics & social hypocrisy- Nature always takes the path of least resistance: A big, fat, cheesy-diner Grease-Burger goes down better than tofu any day of the week! Imagine, 300 million Americans trackin' down dinner?!

  • @SittingMooseShaman There wouldn't be 300 million Americans without this "factory farming" and you already know there's a slight problem with world population.

I'm not against factory farming, after all we all need to eat and we are omnivores. Modern world has just made it relatively easy to get food so we don't think about that when we "get excited" - that's the problem.

  • How the HELL did that camera man keep up?

  • look folks, I keep hearing all this garbage about hunting for sport. I am a hunter and I hunt for food. I like my meat without chemicals and antibiotics. I live near milwaukee, so you tell me where I can buy free range venison for 1$ per 10 pounds of meat. I don't have much money, i am a veteran and I attend college and have to feed myself and my wife. I cover about 9 miles a day in heavy gear in subzero temperatures and thick brush, to take iron sights shots at close range.I'm not fat slobbish.

  • We should go....Sand-People are easily startled, but they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers....

  • I can't imagine any other predator using pure endurance in the same manner. I mean, 8 hours???!!!

  • This is very beautiful. First time I saw it, I cried. Much respect for the hunter and the prey.

  • its funny to watch this and then think their are fat slobbish hunters now a days who use high powered scoped rifles and sit their fat ass in a pre assembled hut or tree stand to shoot a wolf or bear for pure "trophy" that just wanders by, and then thinks its something impressive... pffft bahahahaha

  • @gu151 .... Exactly. Yet they would be the first to make fun of African people (or any indigenous tribe) who they perceive aren't as advanced. Maybe in technology, yes, they are behind. These people are so much more skilled and connected to spirit/source like Native American Indians are. They are true hunters with respect for life in general and would live on as the fat slobbish ones curled up in a fetal position and cried for their mommy.

  • @gu151 Is it any funnier than watching an emaciated tribe that's never more than a day or two from starvation chasing a single animal for hours?

I'll take my rifle, job, plentiful affordable food supply, modern technology, and a gym membership any day of the week. Oh, and proper use of words like "their", "it's", etc.

  • @bobbytimberlake You sound pretty butthurt. Sorry for that. You having technology and a house is by no doing of yours, its simply something you were born into, so bragging about it is hilarious. The main point I wasnt making is that modern hunting is a joke as far as being something to be impressed with. There is no contest in it thus defeating it being called "sportsman". People like you who drive a truck with cheesy bumper stickers and "hunt" with rifles just SCREAM "I have tiny dick"

  • @gu151 Maybe once you're out of your parents' place you'll see that technology, shelter, & food don't just appear. They're created by productive individuals, & if you ever reach the point where your rent, bills, & meals come from your earnings from your labor you'll understand.

As for the whiny old argument that cool guns, powerful cars, computers, planes, explosions, rock climbing, hang gliding, or anything else fun must mean a small dick, what's your line to girls who are into that stuff?

  • @bobbytimberlake Actually I drive tractor trailer for a living with my own house, nice try dick dweeb. I am just realistic enough to know the reality of todays world, unlike you who is to dim witted to grasp basic ecology and statistics. I want to leave the world the same way it was when I was born, when I die. Respect future generations and stop being deliberately arrogant so you can feel less guilty about your shitty ways.

  • @bobbytimberlake, @gu151 Women worth having don't consider many of those things cool and I don't know of many females who consider killing 'fun.' People who get pleasure out of bloodshed, fear, and suffering will get the 'girls' they deserve: common brain-dead redneck breeders.

  • @kitteesPJs Wow, "bloodshed, fear, and suffering"? Sad that that's your worldview of anything outside what must be a sheltered upbringing in some urban island where everything's illegal.

Take a trip to the other 98% of this country some time and you'll find thousands of girls getting their hands dirty working on cars, going to the range, hiking, fishing, tinkering with computer & stereo gear, and enjoying the great outdoors & self sufficiency. But enjoy your bubble existence...

  • @gu151 They're pathetic if you ask me

  • @gu151

I'm inclined to agree with you but most hunting is allowed in order to keep animal populations in check. There's some actual reason put into it

  • Beauty In the Kill. This is Remarkable.

  • beautiful!

  • These hunters don't run as fast as one would think. We are talking about a 10 - 12 minute mile pace, not 5 - 6 minute mile pace as with fast marathoners. it's about tracking skills and endurance. Some people can actually keep up a 14 - 16 minute mile pace just walking. And eight hours is realistic for the hunt, so the video is not edited.

@acebpg I would recommend the long distance physique over the sprinter's. The sprinters, at least in the case of the prey, lose after the long haul =)

  • @grimandfrostbittten you wouldn't be able to keep many predators that you think you would do poorly against in close range (without more modern weapons) from catching you by running unless you were a good distance away or possibly going into a tree or something.

  • @salamandarsalsa you must have misinterpreted my joke to acebpg. I was speaking in terms of human distance runners compared to human sprinters, referencing in the video that in this case the "sprinter" lost :) Although I give many props to this type of hunting, if I hunted I would go out with modern weapons as I don't have time on my side.

  • Mad respect for these peeps. That is hunting at its best

  • This is beautiful.

  • and i thought wrestling practice was hard...

  • he's gonna get laid for getting that deer

  • How did they separate the buck from the herd?

  • Cobra Two-Way Radios

  • no wonder these guys break marathon records... it's part of their way of life... you dont last you dont eat you dont live...

  • Who the hell would ever give this video a thumbs down. These people have great respect for living creatures and only hunt for survival and nothing on this animal goes to waste.

  • Let me guess. You have messed your head with veganism? You're a total douchebag.

  • @jackman1570 you're an idiot. You obviously are ignorant to any and every aspect of the video and the topics you commented on.

  • @jackman1570 NEVER call David Attenborough a liar, you piece of shit. And yes you fag, he did run for hours in the baking heat. Why else did the animal collapse? for fun? riddle me that, dick head.

  • @jackman1570 You can survive running on hot weather without much water IF you are used to it and you have drank before the run. Sneakers improve speed somewhat, but without them the hunt would only take longer and if your feet are used to rough surface you shouldn't experience much pain either. Spear made a hole and it was most likely symbolic; just for cinematic purposes, he obviously killed the animal off-screen.

  • @gesh9

    You're obviously an idiot.

  • @gesh9 youre a cunt

  • shotgun for deer hunting? grab your running shoes instead!

  • Scientist discovered that Non-Africans have 1%-4% neanderthal DNA. Thus non-Africans aren't pure homo sapiens. This got me thinking, no other race can do what those San people are doing. They display great intelligence and unimaginable physical prowess. No wonder they survived for so long and the neanderthals went extinct. It requires both intelligence and physical prowess to survive in this world of ours. I am just fascinated by the African homo sapiens.

  • @jubilee203 (the whole pure talk begs the question: the entire world's population is somehow not full Homo Sapien? you kidding me?) Essentially that means Non-Africans have 99-96% ancient Homo Sapien DNA. Safe to say any person in the world is pure Homo Sapien. Also...no other race could do what the San people are doing?? Again are you kidding me? I'm not saying their life is easy, but there are billions of people who could do what the San people do. At the very least, hundreds of millions.

  • @wiltondeportes No. The research discovered African upon exiting Africa did mate with neanderthal. Causing non-Africans of today to have 1% to 4% neanderthal admixture. Neanderthals aren't ancient homo sapiens. And what's with the we're all the same talk. You and I both know we aren't all physically the same strength. Stop it! There is NO other race that can run 8hrs straight after an animal that runs 35mph. Stop it! Even the African Bantu with their bigger bulk can't do it.

  • @jubilee203 I was speaking of the original Homo Sapiens who left Africa as being the ancient Homo Sapiens first of all. Second of all, I am not saying we are all the same. I am saying we are all within a few percentages of being the same genetically when looked at from the broad scale. Yes I am saying people other than the San could potentially "Persistance Hunt" if they were in that situation. Environment has a lot to do with development of people. Stop with the racial elitism.

  • @jubilee203

Correction, the Kudu can run at 35 mph with a short burst. It can not keep up that speed for 8 hours straight. The first reason Persistent hunting worked is because humans are bipedal. Even though moving with 2 legs reduce the burst speed, it increases endurance. The second reason is because humans can rapidly reduce body heat via sweating. This is something animals can not do. This is also why they hunt in the mid of the day when the temperature is hottest.

  • @holyseraph but humans are animals

  • @jubilee203: Even if modern man outside of African origins has Neanderthal DNA, it primarily recessive. All humans are capable of persistence hunting. The reason why that does not seem likely is because of the lax society that we live in now that does not demand our bodies to do this. Even high school cross country athletes run distances at a pace that most animals would collapse to if they were forced to do the same. We are built for the long haul and we can do it better than any other.

  • @jubilee203 google 'tarahumara' and 'wikipedia ultramarathon runners'

  • @jubilee203 Actually the Tarahumara tribe of Northern Mexico are known to hunt their prey in this way. The Tarahumara or 'Raramuri' which means running people are well known as possibly the best endurance runners in the world. The book Born To Run by Christopher McDougall gives a rare insight into the Tarahumara.

  • I don't mean to be critical, but I just notice things and wonder. Did you notice that at one point the announcer notes that the sun is high in the sky, and says it about noon or so, and then says later that the dramatic moment when the antelope is near death from exhaustion is about 8 hours later? Did you notice that it was still quite light then, like around maybe 3 or 4 pm? I'm thinking if they started at near noon and it took 8 hours to get to the kill, then why isn't it dark or near dusk?

  • @pushya1008 The hunt doesn't start when he mentions the high noon sun. In fact he mentions shortly after that the hunt has already been in procession for a few hours. It's not impossible that the total time of the hunt is closer to 8 hours. It makes sense that they'd start with the rising sun, or just before, as well as it would be cooler out and easier to cover more ground to both find prey and reach the "running" stage of the hunt without dehydrating/exhausting the hunters unnecessarily.

  • @pushya1008 I love the way you think and analyze and I think that the video is edited. It cannot be 8 hours because by then it would be dusk. But wht I think is they start in the morning and do it. It was noon some time and he got exhausted. maybe they started at 6 am because they wake up with sunlight and sounds of dawn. So once they wake up, the only thing they need to worry about is food for the day. So they start off early and hunt till 2 pm maybe. And they start home and return by 6-8 pm.

  • @charlieking100 This is close to the equator, so twilight (dawn and dusk) is very short and the day is split almost perfectly to 12 hours of day, 12 of night. An 8-hour hunt fits pretty nicely into this. Of course the video's edited; it's not 8 hours long. Besides all that, David Attenborough (the narrator) is a scientifically respected broadcaster with an excellent record of sticking to the truth. He wouldn't bullshit to seem impressive, he's not the Discovery Channel.

  • This is the same way zombies hunt humans in the wild.

  • They are no predators, so as our ancesters never were. They live in harmony with nature as a part of it, keeping its balance within the echosystem.

  • Amazing!!! But how does he get the carcass back to his home? He can't carry it. He's proverbially out in the middle of freakin' nowhere. Does he skin it there and carry back the skin and as much meat as he can, or what? And are there lions around? Will he have to defend his kill against them or others? Or do the others somehow figure out where he is and help him bring it back? Anyone know how this works?

  • @pushya1008

well seeing as how you are not a hunter, i will try to make it simple. First, he hits the carcass with a stick. second he picks up the vacuum packed meat that fell out. then he takes the meat to the supermarket where people can purchase it

  • @pushya1008 He probably field dresses it and waits for his friends to catch up and they carry everything useful to a safe distance away from the kill site to avoid predators who would smell the blood. You have to eat the organs right away, since they deteriorate rapidly once the animal is dead, so they would probably start a small fire once they've moved far enough and cook the organs and eat them and prepare the meat further for transport. His friends will have no problem finding him.

  • @pushya1008 the amazing thing is that these people recognize that adolescents and pre nursery women are the ones who need the food and nutrition the most. They cannot get the sustenance they need if they are 50 miles away. It is also impossible for this type of hunt to work if there is not a pack of humans. The whole society, male and female, young and old, participate in the hunt and the pack and they all eat on the spot.

  • @pushya1008 he skins it when he gets home he figures out his way home because of tracks and nearly superior memory he reuses the spear to keep lionesses at bay and hyenas within a few miles of his partners he uses a loud whistling tool to contact his partners whom will provide him with water and help him carry it back to the tribe

  • wow, air jordan's but no gun.

  • I always used to think each and every day when I have to wait in line for filling up gas at CostCo, that I am lucky that I atleast don't need to hunt my own food. Now I know how lucky the bushmen are, to live sustainably and in sync with what mother earth hoped we would be. The way our great great... great grand fathers hunted deer and rabbit thousands of years ago.

    Thank you Sir Attenborough.

  • Just imagine having to carry that back to your people after an 8 hour run. He better drink his own pee.

  • This is a very interesting way in which people are harvesting animal protein for food subsistence. On the other hand, it is sad how you feel as if you must take a stab at contemporary American hunters. I guarantee the majority of hunters today have a higher appreciation and respect for wildlife than you do.

Also, I am sure the man hunting in the video appreciated the BBC film crew scaring the animal on their ATV's. Instead of possibly catching it early on and saving it from exhaustion.

  • Hahah yes see I like the description some of you think you have skill taking a 500 yard shot with a coustom rifle then having to drive over to it

  • Sweet

  • This is truly beautiful. Staying with the animal til it's death. Comforting it.

The Circle of life. Not just raping the land of its animals.

  • holy crap i wish i could run as far as he did and when the man rubbed the deers saliva on his lag i was like ewwwwwwwwww

  • I am further humbled.

  • If David Attenborough weren't an old man, I would marry him.

  • The book "Born To Run" talks more about this. Truly F A S C I N A T I N G!

  • The book "Born To Run" talks more about this. Truly F A S C I N A T I N G!

  • So many questions....

  • Humans are made to run miles to tire animals and stone/cut them to death.

Which is why we sweat alot and we get all these kind of sickness because of our laziness. Without medicines we maybe would get estinct.

Well sadly people are lazy and belivie in god instead of doing what they are supposed to do.

  • @flatbear333 What the hell are you going on about? lol

  • @flatbear333 These people are only good at this because they train to do so. Humans have probably evolved to be able to walk on two legs for long distances, not to run down animals to exhaustion. This is only useful in places where meat, water, and plants are scarce (so you need to run a long time to catch an animal and the animal would have a tough time getting refueled) and where it is easy to follow an animal (such as a desert where there are forests or areas with lots of hills).

  • @salamandarsalsa Chimpanzees have even been seen to use spears and to perform surprise attacks.

  • @adamarmy12 I can hear the veins on your forehead popping.

  • Hunting the way it should be done.

  • Any runners watching this vid? All I can think is that theyd be great in a race...

  • Respect for humans +1

Now I feel I should be doing some persistence hunting.

  • @curlybob64 Nah you don't want to have a long distance runners physique instead do sprints =) That runner is a badass though.

  • @acebpg Already am more of a long distance runner, but I can't sprint for shit.

  • his helmet was stiffling. his shield was heavy.

  • Cause u know...give a man a "dear" and he will be happy for one day

Give him a gun and he will be happy forever

  • He is wearing sneackers!

Just givehim a hamburger and save him from running

  • Then what? After chasing it for 8 hours, you just carry it back to the village on your back?

  • Comment removed

  • Its amazing how SOME people can give this a 'thumbs down', or make negative posts. These men bring themselves near death in order to sustain their families - and pay the utmost respect to the animal.... yet that's not enough for the neohippies - there can be no mistake of whom they see as most valuable.

  • @weaselunit123 You know, I'm absolutely in love with the natural world. Animals have always been what make me most happy. And I agree with you entirely. Their rationale is out of sync, and it's unfortunate that they don't see the beauty in this lifestyle.

  • he would be very handy in a 10,000 meter race

  • Great vid but I dont think the American 90lb beer belly comment was necessary. It did nothing but betray your prejudice and ideology.

  • thas the way all of our meat should be sacrificed.

  • this video would be cool if it was more believable. come on, 7 camera angles to show the killing blow and the hunt. i think not. corniest video on youtube

  • @ManOmayhem The crew is able to film it because the animal is going nowhere; it is exhausted and cannot physically move--giving time for the crew to set up their cameras.

  • I wonder how they made it back to their village being the desert so big and all.. this guys are truly amazing... I don't think i can survive with them even for 1 day...lol! Much respect to the tribesmen!!!!

  • Woah, that was intense!

    Amazing!
